He seemed so... focused, at first, to her tales of the stars and their tales. She had wondered if her question may have startled him from a place he'd much rather be, as suddenly his features changed from awe to almost painful curiosity. Was her question really that difficult? Did one not smile as much as she did, even when alone? Was she strange this way? Her head tilted with more and more curiosity, feeling like a cat walking into a trap.
And then his cheeks filled with color, just barley noticeable by the glow of their pendants combined. A sot.. pinkish color midst the blue. Was he... blushing?
"Not a reason too? Never any, a'tall?" she wondered, looking at him with a mix of sadness of this realization and a bit of happiness that she may have been the one to bring that very smile to his muzzle. And that wasn't all that came from his lips, as a compliment of his own ushered forth and hit her ears. She too blushed, her ears falling back a bit in embarrassment as she fought whether to look at him or away. "T...Thank you. This one... has never much been called that before." she admitted softly, shuffling one hoof over the other as a shy smile spread across her own lips. How nice it felt... to be told such a thing. Perhaps this was the feeling he felt when she had said so. It was a nice feeling, one she now decided she wanted to feel more of. It was just a little bit better than finding all of the answers to her many questions about life. "This one thinks... you should smile more... however." she said with a soft laugh.

It was only a matter of time before she thought he was boring or awkward-- was the thought running through his mind as he waited for her reaction to his compliment. He cringed slightly in anticipation for a remonstration or something of the sort. But it never came. Instead, a quiet, halting reply whispered through the night air and he looked up just in time to see her ear fold in bashfulness. It was almost unbearably cute, to see her shuffling the way she was. Did she truly not hear nice things very often? It seemed odd to Cain, that such a sweet and pretty doe would be unused to compliments. His father and brother were very smooth talkers and often went around calling herla 'prince' and 'princess', simply because it made others feel special. Cain had never understood this practice before, until now. It felt good to make others smile. Well, if it made her happy, he could smile more.
"No... I never had a reason to smile before..." he replied solemnly, thinking of all the time he'd spent alone, cut off from others. His family was so flirtatious, he felt it was almost his duty to be the grounded one. As he looked at Lali and her small grin, the smile that had faded from his face earlier slowly came back, tugging at the corners of his mouth. "I didn't have a reason... before I met you..." he whispered almost guiltily, as though he shouldn't be admitting something so deep so soon after they met. But it was true. Even Canon hadn't been able to make him smile, and they'd been acquaintances from childhood. He paused and pondered for a moment, wondering how his next statement would be met, "If... you'd like... we could... you know... be friends...? I would be able to tell you how pretty you are more often... and... I'd smile..."

She shuffled her hooves together a bit, one over the other, her smile unable to leave her lips even if she tried. If this was how it felt to finally have a friend, there was no question in her curious filled mind about rejecting such an offer as this. "This one would like that... very much." she smiled more, her laugh coming out like a shy nervous fawn.
"You would not need to always call This one pretty however. This one would not want to trouble you so should you grow weary of such a thing." she nodded more seriously, daring to lean her face a little more closer to see in the dark. "But This one would like to find other ways to make you smile... if it brings you as much pleasant feelings as it does to This one..." she said softly and tilted her head, fluttering her eyes at him a bit as if she were searching his features for his reaction. Surely there were other ways to make him do so.. and she wanted to find all of them so that each day she could bring a new smile to his face for a different reason.... if he really wanted her to be around him that long that is...
She had never had a real true true friend before and her hope was high...
