The sky was clear and the sun was shining brightly on the ridges of the Western Mountains. Even with the bright sunshine, there was still the undeniable chill of the coming winter in the air, especially up in the mountains, where there was always a little bit of snow, at least on the peaks. This cold did not hamper Tristan's excitement in the least. In fact, he seemed to prance about on the mountain path as if he couldn't feel the cold at all. Granted, his winter fur was already growing in, but he also had something to look forward to: Hot Springs. That's where he was headed, and he trotted there, full speed ahead, even though he hadn't the slightest idea which way he was going, or even in which direction the hot springs were. He figured he'd get there eventually.

"Magic, Magic," Tristan called to the little smokey black and white bird who fluttered along beside him. "Fly up higher and tell me if you see the hot springs. I can't seem to get high enough."

There was in fact a leap in Tristan's step and this was because he liked to pretend that he could fly. This was how he got to most places, with a hop, skip, and a jump. It was just normal for him. Unfortunately, he couldn't pretend that he could see over the treetops. He needed Magic for that.

The little bird did as he was told and soared up high on the wind, above the tree tops. Unfortunately all he could see were more trees and winding mountain paths. He could see the peak of the mountain with it's snowy top, and he could see jagged points here and there, but there were places those winding paths led to that he just couldn't quite see from their position. He picked the path that seemed most likely, and flew back down to report to Tristan.

"We're coming up on a switchback. We can go up that way, or keep going straight. I think we should go higher!"

"Aye aye, captain!" Called Tristan and he continued on, eagerly awaiting the switchback that would take them higher up the mountain. As he was going along, he looked down the slope they were next to. "Ooh would you take a look at that, Magic! It's the river. It's pretty from up here, huh?"

Magic chirped his agreement, but he also let out a little shiver. It was cold up here! He didn't have a handkerchief or winter fur like Tristan to keep him warm. He decided it was time to take a break and hide in Tristan's hair. That would keep him warm, and he didn't weigh much, it would hardly be any extra work for Tristan. That was the good thing about being such a small little bird. Magic took his place on top of Tristan's head and admired the beautiful mountain scene: the sparkling river, the orange and red treetops, and the brown earth of the path beneath Tristan's hooves. It was a fine life indeed.

Tenzin

Tenzin had been travelling the rocky paths of the Western Mountains, having spent the last three days exploring newer nooks and crannies that had formed into the mountains sides. The draft stallion had a good memory for small details, and so he was able to remember paths and the changes made upon the environment if when they occurred. He unintentionally honed this ability by checking the paths he traveled after any weather change, such as a storm or windy day.

A few days ago had been particularly windy, and the large stallion was certain that there might be a road block from a tree that had been pushed over previously. He had left his familiar, Damian, behind in the Western Forests. While the two were very close, Damian hadn't been particularly interested in "Going out in the cold to count the cracks in the road." as the wolf described it.

As it so happened, there had been a few large branches from various trees that needed to be stomped into splinters along the path to the Hot Springs. Tenzin had traveled up the path all the way to the Hot Springs, spent a day there, and was just now traveling back down the mountain roads towards the Western Forests.

He hadn't seen many Soquili traveling up this route, so when he heard the chatter of another, he was rather surprised. Such a surprise caused him to stop in place, and call downwards, towards the location of the voices he'd heard.

"Hello, hello? Is someone coming up?" The trail was slightly narrow, and Tenzin took up so much space... It was going to be interesting to see what would happen if there really was someone coming up the road.

Tristan Hadriel

Tristan almost didn't hear the stallion shouting over the sound of his clopping hooves and his overall general state of merriment. But he did see him, at the last second. The path had turned suddenly and had become quite narrow, with a cliff face on one side, and a drop on the other. The large draft stallion was blocking his way and Tristan would either crash into him, or stumble off the steep ledge down the mountain.

Magic saw him too. He was no longer daydreaming about the beautiful river below, but now had flown into a panic. Quite literally flown, because the little bird abandoned his post on top of Tristan's head and began to flap his wings and shout. "Halt! Halt! Road block ahead! Stooooop!"

It was too late for Tristan however, he had been going too fast and he knew he wouldn't be able to stop in time. But he had an idea. It was a crazy one, but it was all that he had.

"It's alright! Stay where you are! I'm going to jump! You might want to duck!"

Tristan was a very high jumper, but he had never cleared another soquili before, and definitely not one quite as tall as this brown draft stallion was. But Tristan was determined, and even though he was headed up a slope, he knew that his running start had potential to get him where he needed to go. He began to run faster, and just at the right moment, Tristan jumped with all his might, held his head high, and treasured the moment of soaring, the closest he'd ever get to flying.

Magic watched in amazement as Tristan cleared his highest jump ever. The little bird slowed down and landed on the brown stallion's nose, looked him right in the eyes and said, "Wow, did you see that? That was amazing."

Tristan landed lightly on the other side of the path and skidded to a graceful halt. He turned to face the stallion and Magic. "And you doubted me, Didn't you?" Tristan shook his head. "I knew I could do it." And he gave his new acquaintance a grin and said, "I'm Tristan Hadriel. You can just call me Tristan though. What's your name?"

Tenzin

Tenzin had been quite alarmed to see a blue unicorn Soquili prancing towards him, calling to him to duck, and duck he did. He placed his front hooves in front of him and gave a low bow, hoping to give the unicorn enough space needed to jump. Shutting his eyes tightly, he heard the clicking of hooves against the stone path, and then there was the air that brushed above him as the other jumped over Tenzin's large stature.

At the sound of hooves connecting with the road behind him, Tenzin let out a large breath of air. Careful not to fall down the cliff, the draft stallion turned around to face the unicorn that had cleared him in a single bound. He was opening his mouth to congratulate the stallion on the jump, only to find a bird landing on his nose. Tenzin snorted softly, but he smiled at the bird,

"Yes, it was certainly impressive." He replied to the feathery ball on his nose.

Turning his eyes towards the unicorn, he gave a light chuckle at the unicorn's words. He was certainly a pleasant character, which Tenzin was grateful for. It would certainly be uncomfortable if the unicorn had been upset with Tenzin, who had been blocking the road.

The blue unicorn then revealed himself to be called Tristan Hadriel, to which Tenzin repeated the previous bowing gesture, forgetting about the bird on his nose as he did so. The critter was so light-weight, that Tenzin had forgotten it altogether.

"It's very nice to meet you, Tristan. My name is Tenzin." As he raised from his bow, he asked, "If you don't mind me asking, where were you off to in such a hurry?"

Tristan Hadriel

Magic slipped off the end of Tenzin's nose and fluttered back up into the air and over to Tristan to rest on his head. He ruffled his feathers and settled in his normal spot to enjoy in some new conversation.

Tristan did not return the low bow, as Magic was now on his head, but he did give a nod and a grin and also a little skip.
"Nice to meet you too!" he replied. "We were headed to the hot springs! Do you know if we are headed in the right direction?"

Magic chimed in with, "but he always goes everywhere in a hurry, that's nothing new."

Tristan laughed and gave his head a little shake, causing Magic to hop up and ruffle his feathers again.
"True true," he almost sang, "places to be, things to see!"

"Hot springs to bathe in!" chirped Magic.

Tenzin

Tenzin smiled at the other unicorn, surprised and happy to the young stallion's jolly nature. He normally spooked other Soquili away with his large size, but this blue-faced fellow seemed perfectly happy to be talking to him. Oh, if only Damian had chosen to follow him upon this trip. How happy his familiar would've been to see Tenzin getting along with others so well.

When Tristan revealed that he was going to the hot springs, Tenzin's eyes shone with an idea. Surely Damian wouldn't mind waiting for him another day or two. The wolf could certainly take care of himself, Tenzin was sure. And by the looks of things, Tenzin could have the chance to make a new friend. How rare and lovely a chance that would be!

"What a fine coincidence! I was just coming back from the Hot Springs myself, but if you're in need of an escort, I would be more than happy to accompany you. The Hot Springs is one of my favorite parts of the Western Region, in accompaniment to where I live in the Forests, of course." He offered to the other stallion, sincerely hoping he would take him up on his offer.

Tristan Hadriel

Tristan didn't even need to spare another thought towards the offer; he immediately piped up with, "Oooh, an escort!"

"An escort!" Magic chimed in, feeding on Tristan's excitement and having nothing else in particular to say about the occasion.

"I think we would both be very glad for you to come with us! That way, we don't have to get lost." Tristan stated.

"I told you though, didn't I?" Magic exclaimed, "We were going the right way." The little bird chirped satisfactorily and puffed out his chest.

Tristan looked towards Tenzin, ready to go to the Hot Springs. "Well, we'll follow you then! This will be our first time to the Hot Springs. We're from farther east, by the river."

Tenzin

If Tenzin was surprised at the blue unicorn's enthusiasm, he didn't show it. He was happy to help and happier still to have such a fine pair to escort to the Springs. What a fine day this was turning out to be!

Because Tristan was ahead of him, he would have to direct the unicorn from behind, until the path opened up again.
"Actually, it looks like you're going to have to move ahead first. It shouldn't be for too long, as there's a bend in the road not far ahead, but for the moment, we're going to have to stick with this single file line, I'm afraid." He explained to the unicorn.

"By the river?" Echoed Tenzin when Tristan mentioned coming from the east. "I've seen rivers and streams before, but something tells me that this river is particularly large. Why not tell me what it's like in the East, eh?" Suggested the large stallion.
