It wasn't often Saariyasha condescended to leave the misty forest where he lived, in peace quiet and absolute solitude – free even from most wildlife, like birds and squirrels and other pests. But even the somewhat antisocial male needed to get out and be around others. To not only know that there was life out there beyond his home, but to be around it to experience it in all it's noise and rush and excitement...
It was just a difficult thing for him, knowing as he did what could happen. What could go wrong, and just how fragile life could be. He knew of the winter festival... who on the island didn't? - and thought it might be worth the effort to go, to see the sights, and enjoy himself. At least, as much as he could allow himself to.
He traveled to the island center mostly at night, sticking to the shadows where he felt most comfortable and at home. He started to feel some trepidation as he realised just how many ulaya there were, and how crowded the grounds were going to be. Second thoughts and doubts assailed the normally unflappable male, and more than once he considered turning back.
What was he thinking? This was a bad idea... Too many things could happen. To much could go wrong... But more than his fears and doubts, a small voice inside reminded him how lonely he had been feeling, how even he needed companionship sometimes. Besides, wasn't there the rumors of a well that could grant wishes?
Perhaps he could go on. The festival shouldn't be that bad, should it?

As he neared the island center and the festival grounds, it seemed that there were fewer and fewer ulaya around. The male felt some of the tension start to dissipate somewhat. He started to relax. This, this was acceptable. He could handle this and not have to worry...
Guard lowered, he began to enjoy the outing, enjoy the stinging cold wind that nipped and tore. Some might find it too much, but he was not one of those. He could appreciate nature in all its forms and at all extremes. He stepped out of the darkest of the shadows onto the path. Thikning of nothing and everything. Allowing his mind to wander as his body was functioning on it's own without conscious input.
' A brilliant night. A fateful night, is it not? ' A voice came from out of the darkness nearby. A whisper on the wind. Bright aqua eyes scanned the surrounds as Saariyasha was startled out of his thoughts.
' Over here.'
Head whipping around, he caught a glimpse of something moving swiftly past him, a dark female, almost one with the shadows herself. He stopped moving, waiting for her to speak again, wondering if she would, or if she would just move on. Unsure of which option he would prefer. There was something about the stranger, something about her manner that was disconcerting and somehow familiar.
Her laugh carried on the wind.
' Relax, Saari. I'm not going to hurt you. '

Saari....He hadn't been called that in a long, long time. Not since before the incident. Not since her. But that wasn't possible. No one knew him by that name. No one living anyway.
He had buried that name in his past when he buried his heart. When he buried her.
And yet, there she was. Or someone like her. Someone who knew that name, and spoke with that same affection and warmth that she used when speaking to him. Perhaps it was someone real. Or more than likely it was his mind playing tricks on him. That's it. It was his mind playing tricks on him. Taunting him with the sight of the only one he would ever love, but would never have again.
The apparition laughed, before melting into the shadows and seeming to vanish. 'You're not dreaming, or hallucinating, or whatever you are thinking Saari. You'll see. Just meet me at the wishing well. '

With new incentive to reach the solstice grounds, and more importantly, the wishing well, the dark male abandoned the shadows, ignoring the fact he might come into closer contact with the masses than he might normally feel comfortable with, and picked up his pace until he was nearly running. He needed to reach the well. He needed to find out just what this was about.
He needed to know if she was actually alive, or if this was just some cruel trick of Fate.
By the time he reached the well, it was all but deserted. The biting cold wind, and the lateness of the hour enough to deter all but the most dedicated and possibly drunk revelers. He didn't know, and truly, in this moment, he couldn't care less.
'I am here.' He stated as he sat at the edge of the well. 'So what's this all about? Are you here? Who are you? '
'Patience, Saari. All will become known at the proper time.'
He could almost feel her breath along the side of his cheek, and the caress of her tail along his side. But she wasn't there. It wasn't real. It couldn't be. And yet... he could feel her, touch her, smell her. So it couldn't be an illusion or hallucination could it?
'You haven't made a wish yet. You need to make a wish first.'

Closing his eyes, Saariyasha made a wish. Not because it was tradition, or because of her, if she was there or not.
He made a wish because he was tired of living the way he had. Tired of fearing himself, what he might do, what he might become.... Because enough was enough. He was tired of the guilt, and was finally ready to let go.
'It wasn't your fault.' As his eyes were shut he felt a nuzzle on the side of his face. A brief kiss. 'Let it all go. You will be at peace. All you have to do is follow me.'
It wasn't all that easy, was it?
He didn't know if it was. Or if he could find peace from what he had done, but he was willing to take the chance. All he had to do was take that first step. Fin... at least for now
