Miasma had assumed she’d arrived alone to the festivities in the Inbetween; she’d snuck out of Capricorn’s beach home when nearly everyone had been asleep so as to not disturb anyone and although she certainly wasn’t the first to make it to the New Year’s bash, the party had clearly already begun. For a few moments she hesitated outside, not completely sure how she was supposed to insert herself into the party atmosphere but unwilling to just launch herself into the middle of things.
Somehow she figured her mother would have gotten a kick out of that one.

Despite her best efforts in the realm of stealth, Jalil had been wide awake on the deck as he’d watched Miasma leave the home. He’d taken the night shift for patrol, wanting to take the time to watch the stars for New Year’s and had been more than surprised to catch her- prim, polite Miasma of all demons- sneaking out.
Naturally, he’d followed her. It was only to make sure she was safe in the Inbetween, he’d told himself; she was too young to remember the carnage the war had wrought there and although the festivities planned had promised a safe zone he couldn’t let her go alone. That certainly didn’t sit right with him.
“Mia,” he said quietly as he came to her side, trying his best not to startle her, “Did you think no one would notice you slip away?”

Her heart stopped for a moment at the sudden voice beside her, and it was all Miasma could do not to nearly jump out of her skin. She slumped in defeat as she looked to the larger demon, desperately hoping he had not come to just drag her back home.
“No one else was going,” she tried carefully, stomach turning in knots, “I wanted to see what the fuss was about.”
With a sigh she glanced downwards, talons digging into the ground. “You didn’t have to come collect me, Jalil.”

For a moment her complacency surprised him. Jalil was familiar with her mother and her attitude problem, but although Miasma certainly carried a faint resemblance to Armada she was not quite the same.
“I didn’t,” he answered, yet not moving from where he stood beside her, “I… came to see what the fuss was about.”
A half-lie. His moral code had sent him simply to make sure she was safe, nothing more… but he hardly planned to leave now. Somewhere inside there was the sound of breaking glass followed by raucous laughter; the music simply got louder as everything kept on going the way it was. The night was just getting started. Taking a few steps forward, Jalil glanced to her over his shoulder.
“Shall we?”

Miasma breathed a soft sigh of relief at his words. This wasn’t to say she’d necessarily like the kind of partying that went down here in the Inbetween, but she could at least have the chance to give it a try. Padding up alongside him again she paused, all too aware of the warmth of him against her when her shoulder brushed his.
“Yes,” she replied after a moment, looking up at him, “Let’s.”
