Born to a family of peasant farmers Nihil's life was to be one of back breaking, though wholesome, labor planting crops and tending to livestock. His life would have very well been just that but life is often messy and not as clean cut as some would see it. When he was barely into his adolescence his small village was caught up in a territorial war between two nobles. The result was the destruction of his home, the slaughter of family, and, as if life were simply rubbing salt on an open wound, he became a slave to mercenary company under the pay of the opposing noble. For years afterwards he knew only a life of subservience to cruel and uncaring masters who beat him for the slightest infractions, tortured him sport, and used him as training dummy for the companies newest hires. His life might have very well continued on like this until the day he died but life was to yet again throw him another curve ball.
One night while the company were camped out near a river a rival mercenary company attacked, needless to say, slaughter ensued. In the heart of this malestorm of death and destruction Nihil beheld a fascinating sight, one that he will never forget. A mercenary from the raiders was fighting a lopsided battle, seven to one, yet he was winning as Nihil's owners, still groggy from sleep and drink, attempted to overwhelm their lone opponent. The raider easily bat aside their fumbling strikes and cut them down in turn, limbs flew, blood spurted high, and men cried their last. The fight as a whole was over rather quickly with nearly all of Nihil's owners dead upon the ground. With no owners, and no one to tell him not to, the former slave strode up confidently to the warrior he'd seen fight earlier and told them he wanted to join them.
The imposing warrior gave him a short laugh and told him that they only accepted actual fighters into their ranks. Not to be dissuaded Nihil promptly told him he was a fighter and recanted to the warrior with his experiences as a training dummy, though he did embellish a bit, claiming to have beaten one in single combat. Luckily it proved enough to at least make the warrior consider it, he would have to speak to his brothers first though. For days after the attack Nihil nervously waited for an answer from his liberators until it got to the point that the former slave was sure he'd been tricked. Early one morning, his fears were seemingly put to rest when the warrior called for him, upon arrival Nihil was told he would have to pass a test if he wished to be really considered for recruitment. Eager to please the former slave told the warrior he'd do anything, unfortunately, the test was not quite he imagined.
In the months that followed Nihil, and many others, found himself pushed to his limits in grueling exercises and drills, ten mile runs, bare steel sword fights, wrestling, endurance tests in freezing streams and blazing hot fields. Yet through it all Nihil never gave in, sure he contemplated quitting more than once but he knew he had an opportunity that would never come again. In the end he persevered and he became recruit for the company of Free Men of Kova.
During his first fledgling years in the Free Men he caught the eye of the company's lore master, an elderly man who was responsible for keeping the history of the company. You see he'd caught Nihil sneaking peaks into the many tomes that detailed the great deeds and stories of the companies past. Rather than punish the young recruit the elder instead encouraged his interest in the company lore, as he himself was quite old he would need someone to pass the title onto when he died. So as it was the lore master taught Nihil how to write, read, and sing, plus how to tell a good joke.
Years passed and Nihil, long since accepted fully into the fold of the company found himself yet again set up against imposing odds. The company had taken on a contract from a noble who was at war with several other nobles over control of a throne. At first the war had gone well for them but slowly the tide turned against them until they found themselves pinned to a wall as it were. Besieged within a port city the commander of the company had tried to find some way for them to escape, to evade an ever encroaching doom. In the end they could not escape and the Free Men of Kova fought down to the last man... except one. During the final battle the lore master had given Nihil all the tomes, ballads, and stories that made up the companies history and told him to hide. According to company tradition, should a the company ever be wiped out, any survivors must make their way back to the company's found nation, Kova. So after the great battle Nihil left the dead city, traveled to a nearby neutral port city and booked a passage to the strange western lands where Kova was supposedly existed.
Personality:
Nihil is a man who is guided by two things, his curiosity and his sense of honor. If something intrigues him he will investigate it, study it, and if possible take it with him. He follows a strict code of honor instilled within him by his years with the Free Men, he follows it so fervently he'd rather die than betray his honor. Though he is not afraid to fight Nihil prefers to avoid violent situations, part of his code of honor shames against those with bloodlust. When it comes to socializing Nihil is actually rather shy, not exactly what you'd expect from a professional soldier but seeing as his only friends were those from the company he never found it necessary to socialize outside of this group.
