The key to writing a good fanfic with an original character is to write a good fancharacter. In my travels, I've seen some beautifully written fancharacters. I've also seen fancharacters that should be sent back to the drawing board.
If you've created an original character for an Invader Zim fanfiction, you'd be well advised to see if he or she is a Mary-Sue. There is a test that you can use to verify a fancharacter's standing, and I'll post it here:
Mary-Sue Litmus Test
This one is equipped with a script version of the test, plus includes additional references so you can learn the history of the Mary-Sue.
I strongly recommend it for all writers of fanfiction and original fiction.
And if you're bored, you can always see if you'd be a Mary-Sue yourself! I know I scored 30 points when I grilled myself...

Whoo!
I had to ignore some of those questions because she is Irken, and sometimes they just did not fit the way the question was asking.
XD I am now extra pleased that I gave her pink eyes, just because I am so sick of seeing fancharacters with Blue/Green/brown/orange/etc eyes...Most common color is PINK, people! Not all those Irkens in the first episode, and now somebody count, right now, just how many non pink eyed Irkens there were, excluding the Tallests.
And as for names, most have very simplistic ones, which is why Sen fit the bill. Yes, I know it be a name for the girl in Spirited away; I'm horrible at names, wretched, but it was simple and easy enough to fit the Irken bill. Whoo!
She is a Taller, but she is only a tech, and a rather sarcastic lesbian at that. Created specifically for a non-con RP turned fic (which I can link if anyone wants...tis pretty graphic, though, so not recommended for the weak bellied), I've come to adore her like non other monkey...

Well, I ran my Irken fancharacter (Vox, the Irken Mentat) through the paces, and he came out a Borderline-Sue with 28 points to his name. He's a psionic like Tak, smarter than a Hooloovoo (a supraintelligent shade of the colour blue), master designer of weapons and robots, and the only Irken in existence capable of repairing a defective Pak (for which he is known throughout the Empire.)
He has purple eyes and a purple technician's overcoat (he's an officer within the caste), hates SIR Units and really stupid people, likes really smart people, and has a custom Spittle Runner equipped with ultrasonic weapons instead of lasers. I use him for the occasional RP and for a fanfiction in the making.

I got a 32. *sigh* I was so close to getting a Mary Sue, it's just scary. But my character only attracts so many guys because she dresses like a slut because it's her profession! They're not gonna kill themselves, you know! gonk
