I was wondering if there were any other sufferers of sleep paralysis or its evil cousin, hallucinatory sleep paralysis, here in the guild.

As for me, I am a lifetime sufferer of H.S.P.

As for all of you lovely mods, this may not be a mental illness in the strict sense of the word, but...it is an interesting neurological phenomena. Perhaps we may learn something?

I have had problems with sleep paralysis with night terrors (the hallucinatory sleep paralysis that you speak of). Fortunately, it's been awhile since I have had one. It usually occurs when I am extremely stressed and very worn out. Supposedly, this phenonemon occurs because the brain secretes movement inhibitors during sleep, and these "hallucinations" occur as the brain enters into a REM-like state early on in the sleep cycle (not exactly REM, though). You remain aware of your surroundings because you're still in that "half-asleep/half-awake" state, but your brain starts dreaming anyway, and you can not move.

I get sleep paralysis and sleep apnea only on very rare occasion, usually when my sleep schedule is messed up for some reason. However, my mother gets hallucinatory sleep paralysis very often. It used to scare her a lot, but now that she's seen doctors about it, it's not so scary to her and she considers it a kind of religious experience!

Hehe.. all the mods have replied now and said nothing about this not being about mental illness. Well, I suppose I have now. xp

I don't get it. I'm very thankful. The idea of being unable to move like that is making me shake. Although, I once woke up in the middle of the night and saw MANKYNESS WARNING .................................
a dog's head attatched to a chair in my room with it's collar still on and it's eyes all dark and weird like it had been stuffed. I couldn't move then, but I think that was out of fear. gonk

However, I do sleepwalk though not frequently, and sleeptalk, probably quite a bit.

Actually, sleep disorders are considered mental-illnesses by many Psychologists these days! The DSM-IV-TR lists the following as mental disorders:

Dyssomnias: Breathing-Related Sleep Disorder, Circadian Rhythm Sleep Disorder, Hypersomnia, Hypersomnia Related to Another Mental Disorder, Insomnia, Insomnia Related to Another Mental Disorder, Narcolepsy and Dyssomnia NOS.

Parasomnias: Nightmare Disorder, Sleep Terror Disorder, Sleepwalking Disorder and Parasomnia NOS.

I used to sleep walk a lot when I was younger. Apparently, my father did as well. I also talk in my sleep quite a bit.

Wow, thank you for that info, Smart Alex. I always wondered how sleep disorders were categorized, being a frequent sufferer of sleeplessness myself.

redface I feel a bit silly now. But thanks for the info. I have a feeling sleep disorders are diagnosed and treated differently in the UK... I think I remember seeing soemthing about it on TV. Is hypersomnia the thing some people get due to depression where they feel they need to sleep for most of the day?

Sleep Terror Disorder.... if that's what i think it is (basically really bad nightmares and sleepwalking) I feel very sorry for anyone with it or anyone who lives with soemone with it.

I generally only get sleep paralysis during medication withdrawl. Sometimes hallucinatory, sometimes not. Sometimes I'll get sleep paralysis in my dreams and wake up only to find I'm now somewhere else and I still have sleep paralysis. It's like falling through layers of reality, kind of disconcerting.

Yes and no! Though people with Depression can feel the need to sleep for most of the day, Hypersomnia as a disorder all its own is not associated with Depression.

Not necessarily sleepwalking, and they don't remember their dreams, but it does involve waking up screaming in fear.
