"Some of those children are mine you know..." He shot dagers at the mouse. How dare she! He growled, "No, I will not harm her, or the children...though a little mouse is starting to wear my last nerve.." His tail snapped out behind him.

The little mouse took off without the blink of an eye and she was gone. The messenger had done its job...but to the very wrong people.

Cayimmi looked at his beautiful mate, his sorrow filled face softening into a small smile. Niobe trully was his ray of hope. "And clever like her mother... Yes, one day she will..." It took some time to Cayimmi to notice the commotion, in time to see the red speckled mouse make a hasty get away. "Wasn't that Maeri?" The hardened features of both Benoni and Adaeze spoke loud and clear. It could only be Kila related, he thought gravely, getting to his paws and approaching them. "News?"

"Mama? We...w-we there yet?" The question was almost earnest, yet very quietly asked as if he was afriad to know the truth. A few sniffles followed closely afterward like punctuation marks.

Lakoni, who had been standing on a rock and scanning the horizon, layed down and let go of the cub that had been asleep in her jaws to the ground where she held him in her paws. She was quiet for a moment as she studied him with a sad smile before licking the tears that threatened to fall down his face. "Soon, love...the pride is close by," she lied, actually having no clue how close to the pride she was. She held him closer to her chest, nuzzling him softly, trying not to cry herself. Being strong for him was something she was surprised she could be.

Giving him a few more nuzzles and some attention till he'd stopped his latest bought of crying, a few tears joining his though she tried to hide it as much as possible, she urged him to ride on her back for a time. He nodded and with a bit of help from his mother, finally lay curled up between her shoulder blades, his fur merely a shade lighter than his mother's.

Still she layed there still, watching the horizon and wishing she'd gotten better directions from the last group of nice lions she'd met, till his sniffling died down and she was sure he was asleep. "Le Roi de Sorrow...", she whispered, her voice lingering on the last word like a life vest. Her life, and now her son's, seemed nothing but full of sorrow, and it was for that alone she made her way to the pride, though admittedly it did help to hear about the king's reputation as well as a gruff but fair lion. Deep in her heart, she knew they'd find protection there where Byron could grow up safe and strong to become the lion he should be.

Getting up carefully, her bones creaking with age more felt than reality, she made her way down the rock and forward once more. It had been raining for quite some time, and though she was afraid of him getting sick and longed to just lay there with him wrapped in her paws, she knew the best place for him would be in some warm cave...she only hoped he'd accept her in.

It was sometime later, hours or minutes she no longer knew as she scanned the ground for signs of the pride, her thoughts lingering to the past where her mate and other son were still alive, before she realized she was now walking right on the border. She paused with one paw in the air as if to debate running away when she felt the faint stirrings on her back of Byron shifting his position and shivering a little with the cold. Sighing, she knew what she had to do even if it scared her to death to be amoung other lions again. Even if it wasn't Benoni's pride, perhaps they would let them rest in the den until the rain had stopped...

Giving a loud roar to announce her presence, she lay down and let Byron crawl into her paws to warm himself in her chest fur as she tried to dry him off a bit.

With a sigh, she rolled onto her back in the den now. She missed her mate, and had sunk into a bit of a depression...her mother had cubs with another..her ears pinned back, eyes closing tightly she looked towards the cold den wall.

Her father had restaked his claim as King, but she could feel there was something amiss about him. With a sigh, she just laid there, eyes closed. Ears flat against her head as she listened to the storm clouds over head...

Niobe nuzzled her mates cheek softly, she'd gone with her brother and niece to see Kila, and the news was something she hadnt even seen coming. "Shes...had cubs with another.." Niobe whispered, her soft voice filled with her brothers heartache, the twins shared a heart, she could feel the pain he no longer showed. "But yes, our Polaris will return to us my love...and we will be waiting for her.." She licked his muzzle affectionately, the sound of a roar caught her attention, she turned her head to look towards the boarders but didnt make a move to answer it.

He lifted his muzzle and let out a roar that once more caused the birds of the land to take flight, the King was back he thought as he prowled towards the call. Unforgiving lavender eyes sparkled against his dark coat, as he made his way forward, the scent he had picked up was female..and male. His ears pinned back a bit, had that b*****d male brought himself and his and kila's cub to him? That'd be the stupidest thing ever...He would harm the cub, but he'd take her and make sure she never saw her parents again..Benoni smirked a little bit.

As the rain fell, it bounced from his coat, darkening his gray to an almost perfect black hue. Finally, the female came into view as did her small cub, so the winged male was smarter...damn he thought with a snort. "You rang?" He spoke, dark deep vocals echoed out. "I am Benoni, King of these lands.."

Lakoni’s head shot up when the roar finally reached where she lay, and she looked up quickly and scanned the horizon for the King’s presence but didn’t see anything yet. Her muscles tensed and for a moment she looked as if she was going to run before Byron called her back to reality. Nuzzling the top of his head, she asked, “Say again, love?”

“Will he like us, Mama?”, the black cub whispered, peering up at as his mother. The look in his eyes was one of desperation to be accepted, yet deep fear that he’d be killed just as he’d seen daddy and brother murdered. There was no excitement to his voice or actions, no thrill of adventure…just fear. He looked away when movement caught his eye, and cautiously edged back as far under her as he could when he saw the big lion approaching.

Lakoni studied her son’s face, her heart breaking at what she saw there. Hugging him closely, she closed her eyes and lied, “Yes, hunny…I’m sure he will.” She had no clue if he would and feared the worst but tried not to show it to him. As he edged backward, she looked up again to see the big King walking towards her, and tensed once more for an imagined attack. Her first impression was that what she’d heard about him being large and mighty were definatly on the money, and looked his role to a ‘T’. Glancing down to Byron (who was watching the dark lion with what could be only termed awe and a bit of fear), she dug up what courage she had to face him and sat up, hunching over slightly not only to protect her only son left, but to shield him from the rain as well.

Bowing her head to him in reverence of not only the power she knew he had, but what radiated from him in powerful waves, she was momentarily unable to answer his question. Glancing once more to her son for courage, she knew what she had to do and looked up at Benoni. “I…I am Lakoni, and this is my son Byron. I’ve been traveling, looking for a pride in which I could raise my son in peace. Please, sir, I’ve heard much about your pride…and that you are good and fair king...” Her words trailed off as her voice faltered. She’d been through so much in the last few days: finding out too late of the order for the death of her mate and sons (Byron had been spared the attack only because he’d decided after his dad and brother had left to go do something to join them, but had arrived in time to watch them be murdered), the ensuing trauma of her son and the banishment from her old pride…she could hardly look Benoni in the eye for fear he’d turn her away as well.

The pair looked tired, and he could smell the stench of fear. Lifting his head ever so slightly, he looked down upon them. "Come now then..lets get you two out of the rain." His words were short and curt. Fair? Ha he laughed at himself, he were anything but, just ask Santos he thought with a shake of his head.

He'd have to seek him out sometime he reminded himself. This little pity war between prides was not worth the effort he thought to himself as he turned. "You are welcomed into my pride, my sister and daughters will ease any aliments you may have.." His tail flickered as he waited for the pair to pass by him.

He wasnt that big of a monster in the clouded rain he thought, to leave a mother and her son out in flood terrain in the rain...no that was not him.

Lakoni visibly relaxed a little when he didn’t turn them away, but it would be a long time before she ever felt totally comfortable around others, at least not till Byron was better able to care and defend himself. She was more than a bit intimaded by Benoni, but refused to give in to her fear that something would happen and gave him a greatful smile before looking down at Byron. “Do you want to walk, hun?” When she got his affirmative answer, she stood up and carefully made her way past the King pausing only for a moment when she was in front of him to murmer a very quiet and very grateful “Thank you so much.”

Byron padded beneath his mother, keeping to one side that was away from Benoni, but more curiosity than fear made him study the older lion as they passed. The reason he’d chosen to walk was because he wanted to show the king he wasn’t just any cub who rode everywhere he went. He tried to walk proud and tall, his chest out as they passed, and though he had to run every few steps to keep up with the adults, he was intent on making a good impression. After all, if a lion likes you, he’s less likely to want you dead, right?
