Simple question - what to you think as better, a petticoat that is based on having alot of fabric to it of one what has a wire sewn in it to hold the thing up? Or should one perhaps combine these two?
I have worn a "wired" underdress before with a larger dress, and seen many different types of underdresses done this way thanks to a lovely Finnish tradition, the "Elder's dance". My general problem with them is, though, that especially with this fabrics the wire seems to pop out clearly or leave the fabric to drop strainght after it. Both I consider to be ugly.

i thought about that for a while...and then realised...if it's at the right length for a loli..it going to hurt to sit down!!!
I like all the fabric on a petti, it just adds to that foofyness that i feel is an important part of the Lolita fashion ^^

If given the choice between wired, or not, I would choose the not.
It would be uncomfortable, and weird when you sat down... it would kinda.. stay round and not flatten when you sit, ne? ._.'
I personally have three fabric crinolins and love them all. I have a slightly poofy brown/black antique one from the 50's with a nylon underlayer then only one layer of light mesh overtop. It gives this affect:
 Yep, not so poofy, just a little. I wear it as a skirt on it's own though with a slip. And then I have two other really poofy crinolins... one is a plastic, starchy, itchy mesh, and the other a huge, light, soft, nylon square dancing crinolin. Both are kinda long, and the square dancing one is incredibly heavy, so it falls down off my waist a bit, but still nice.
If you can, go for a soft square dancing crinolin. They're absolutly wonderful.

For the most part I use fabric, unless I absolutely have to use wire. Even then I try to get away with a wire/fabric combo of sorts. Wires are just too restrictive for me.
But in the end, it all boils down to what works with the dress and how poofy you want it!

I've only worn a wired one once, for my wedding. It was a little awkward to sit down, but not as bad as I had thought it would be (although it might be harder if you're wearing a shorter skirt) What I ended up doing, was pulling the back of my dress up a little so I wasn't actually sitting on a wire, it was behind me on the seat of my chair. It became a lot more difficult after we bustled the gown >_> but that probably isn't something you'll be too worried about.
After that experience though... I think I'd opt for the fabric ones ^^ You just have to wear more of them to make your dress poofier ^^;

That's just what the true Victorian ladies did. :3 But yes, I was figuring it would be extremely difficult with a shorter dress.. Unless you want to be sitting on your bloomers or bum avery time you have to sit. >_>;
