Should the mentally ill have children? If not, why not? Is the concern more that they will not be able to take care of children properly, or more that they should not knowingly conceive a child that may be genetically more likely to develop a mental illness? If you are mentally ill, do you ever plan to have children? Why or why not? If you do want to have children, do you plan to get genetic counseling beforehand? If you do not want to have children, would you abort if you did become pregnant?

Um...yes, I want to have kids. My mom has bipolar, my dad ADHD. I have both, and likely mild cases of more. Mom wasn't even diagnosed til about a year, year and a half ago, and I must say, I feel I was raised very well. I would, of course, take in the risks into consideration given my own standing.

So, it sounds like you feel confident that you will be a good parent. Do you worry about the child developing a mental illness? Would you feel guilty in some way? Would you feel it was right to have a child if you knew for sure that it would develop a mental illness?

I might feel some guilt, yes, in that it might be selfish of me to bring a child in to the world with some problems, but I feel that love can outweigh. but I haven't FULLY thought it out, so...

I want to have children. My family doesn't have a past with mental illness, but we do have quite a history with cancer. I think it's like comparing the two. If your family has a past with cancer, would you reproduce with the chance of your children developing cancer? The answer: I would. I want to have children. You can't dwell on the negative facts. You have to believe your children will be healthy. You can't look after everything. I don't think I'd get genetic counseling. I would want my children to be perfectly natural, no messing with genes or anything like that. Anyways, genetic counseling is expensive and doesn't always work.

What is genetic counseling?
I want to have kids someday. Of course I need to find someone first. =p But anyways, with my anxiety I'm not sure how i'd be as a father. I think I could pull through. Of course, it's not like i'd be raising a child alone or anything.

Darialan Love What is genetic counseling? Ares I don't think I'd get genetic counseling. I would want my children to be perfectly natural, no messing with genes or anything like that. Anyways, genetic counseling is expensive and doesn't always work. Oh, I'm not talking about gene modification! That's not possible in most of our cases! Just genetic counseling. Genetic counseling is a service in which a couple is consulted to find out the factors that may contribute to their future child developing the illness. This can be necessary for some people who have multiple factors involved. In some illnesses, genetic tests can be provided to find out if parents are carriers for specific genes so that they can make the decision of whether or not to have children, or how to prepare for the inevitable. Genetic counselors can also provide information on how to best help the child with mental illness, and deal with pregnancy and medication issues.

metal illness doesnt mean we're some evil people...with most cases the diseases can be kept under control...and yes there is a chance you can pass the illness to you're offspring but it can be damaged...
metal illness is exactly that...an illness...sayin that a person with for example depression or schitzophernia cannot have children is like telling someone that they are not allowed to have kids because they have diabetes or they are deaf...
i know people who have parents with really big metal illnesses and the kids turned out fine and best of all the parents are great at what they do...
the thing is that if you have a supportive environment and are willing to work through problems
my parents are perfectly fine...as are the generations before me...no mental illness history on either side of me...as for me i have a chemical imbalance in my brain...lack of seretonin...and i;ve had that for at least half my life...
we know little bout genetics...and little bout the reasons behind so many of the metal illnesses...who's to say that the doctors are right?

I think it is far too unfair on a child if both it's parents are mentally ill. One is ok though, as long as they don't have something that would make them hurt their child. I also think it's not great to have kids if they have a high chance of being born with some sort of disorder (like downs syndrome).

This is going to sound bad and contradictary to my belief of what autism is. I don't plan on having children because I fear bring an autistic child into this world. Why? Because society cannot accept them, and I fear I cannot care for them.

I'm not sure whether I want to have kids or not, but mentally ill should be allowed the right to have kids. One simple reason that tends to change minds is due to the fact that Hitler sterilized those who weren't the 'perfect German'. Obviously, this included mentally ill. You're looking at one hell of a strong supporter for equal rights, here. I'll be defending this to the end.
