My mother just set up an appointment for me with a psychiatrist. What should I expect out of this? So far my first visit is going to be 45 minutes.
What are some tips you can give me to get through with whatever I need to get through? In these situations, I tend to clam up and not talk. It's expensive, so I need some tips to relax or something in there.....

( i did this and now i've got somebody i dont mind talking to now) for relaxing- um...i've never had that problem so i'm sorry but i dont really have any advice for that... sweatdrop

if you have problems remembering what you want to talk about its as simple as sitting down before the appointment...when you're at home and relaxed and just writing everything on paper...
symptoms, any issues you have, what you want to gain through help from the psych...etc
the first session is usually tryin to determine your case history...what you have, how long its been going on, how severe it is and just how severly it affects your life...
psychiatrists are given a bad rep...the important thing to remember is that they are trying to help (it might not seem that way all the time, but they do care)...depends on the condition you have they might suggest taking medication...this is not a bad thing cause they dont give medication to people who dont need it...
you will be fine...huggles tell us how it goes...
remember we're here for you
feel free to PM me any time

You can expect this to be your Intake appointment. Even if you have already had an Intake with another staff member, the Psychiatrist will be doing his or her own Intake on you. That means that he or she is going to ask you a whole lot of questions the entire time. Some people find Intake appointments very difficult if they have been having a bad time in their life because it's hard to talk about it without getting sad. Your Psychiatrist will be asking you a lot about your symptoms, and a lot about your everyday life and what you do. To get through it, I suggest you write out all of your symptoms on a piece of paper to bring in so that you don't leave anything out. It's easy to be flustered by all of the personal questions and to forget that you need to talk about all your symptoms in order to get them all treated.

That's the problems I have mostly. Not wanting to talk about it because I'm ashamed or scared or something. I don't want to go back to the times I wanted to die when I'm feeling perfectly fine that day....
That's when I tend to clam up and say, "I don't know..." Which I know has to be frustrating for the therapist....
I'm kinda scared about getting prescribed medicine too. I know that there are medicines out there that really screw you up in the head. Namely, the "black box" meds. It's just kinda overwhelming.

Ares That's the problems I have mostly. Not wanting to talk about it because I'm ashamed or scared or something. I don't want to go back to the times I wanted to die when I'm feeling perfectly fine that day.... That's when I tend to clam up and say, "I don't know..." Which I know has to be frustrating for the therapist.... Which is why it might be a good idea to write down everything beforehand. Script it so that you can't chicken out. Even if you do, you can give your notes to the Psychiatrist and say you don't feel comfortable talking about it out loud. Ares I'm kinda scared about getting prescribed medicine too. I know that there are medicines out there that really screw you up in the head. Namely, the "black box" meds. It's just kinda overwhelming. Tell your Psychiatrist that you're scared. Have her go over all of the side-effects of drugs before you take them, and have a plan with her of what to do if you start experiencing any weirdness. That way you won't freak out if something does happen, and you'll learn with experience how certain drugs affect you, and what you can do to get better fast.

Ares Thanks for all the advice! I appreciate it! there are alot of good medications out there...i'm on an SSRI called lexapro...its one of the newest generation one...and it has minimal side effects..its been found to work great with teenagers and young adults... i used to be scared of taking meds too...but i realised that i needed them in the end...this is after spending weeks talking to counsellor and my doctor... no matter what happens dont be ashamed of what you feel and what you go through...YOU ARE NOT ALONE... i used to be like that and then i started talking to people with similar problems as me and i realised that there are alot of people out there that go through the same things as me and most of all they also feel scared and ashamed... chances are that the psychiatrist might refer you to a psychologist for therapy...either way you will be fine...its not easy to get better but it can be done

I've been to plenty of therapists and such. They never seem to do any good. I might leave feeling better, but on the drive home I end up just getting mad or something.

Most of the stuff they say seems like a crock to me. It doesn't seem real. Of course, my last therapist was crazier than I am. She was talking about all these chakras, auras, mandolas, and stuff that I really don't believe in or know about, so I couldn't really understand what analogies she made to my heart chakra. Then the ones before that just had a "holier than thou" attitude....
