And so continues the saga of my medication...

Current status: 40 mg fluoxetine (Prozac), 100 mg doxepin (Sinequan).
Two weeks ago I was titrated down to 20 mg 'zac, as per schedule. Unfortunately, this coincided with my final exams, and I couldn't handle it. After a period of stuffing myself with junk food and desperately trying to concentrate on cramming for exams that would decide my career, I went back up to 40, just in time to get the levels back up for the actual exams. My shrink and I decided to go back to the 'zac instead of upping the doxepin, since we didn't know exactly what would happen and the results could be disastrous at such a stressful time in my life.
Those are over (w00-h00!!) and I'm seeing my shrink again Monday. Thing is, he suggested keeping me on both the zac and the doxepin, or, if cost was a problem, giving me the tons of free samples of zoloft they have. I was originally on Zoloft before Prozac. It wasn't bad, but my teeth were rotting from subtly dry mouth and I always had a tense-ish feeling throughout my body.
I'm just curious why I should be on two antidepressants at once instead of a larger dose of one. I've adjusted to the doxepin side effects pretty well, however, one thing kinda sticks in my mind: I suffer from anxiety/panic disorder as well as depression. The Prozac actually seemed to treat both quite well (so did the Zoloft, which my mother, who also takes it, refers to as "our miracle drug". I wonder if she can get paid to be a spokesperson... xd ) When I dropped the 'zac levels, I could tell I was a lot more anxious, my fuse much shorter. I'd prefer to be on the doxepin since I think it does a much better antidepressant job, but if I need something for my anxiety, too, wouldn't it make more sense to take something specifically for anxiety?

Which brings me to another problem I have with bringing that up to my shrink: I've taken lorazepam before--lorazepam I was not prescribed--and it works very well for my anxiety. My shrink knows I've used drugs recreationally, and he knows I've never had a problem abusing them--I reassured him I don't take drugs so I can cope with my life or because I need them to function, only at parties and stuff, and like I said, I've taken them for panic attacks. Should I suggest an anti-anxiolytic? Has anyone heard of taking two antidepressants together?

Just keep telling your doctor that you need treatment for the anxiety. If it's getting so bad that you can't function and your doctor still isn't addressing it, you need a new doctor!

Yeah, that's actually pretty common. Don't worry about that!

I told my doctor I've tried lorazepam, and...he gave me a script. eek

So now I'm on fluoxetine and doxepin daily and lorazepam prn. And acyclovir, but that's something different...though herpes can be rather depressing... xd

Good to know taking two antidepressants together isn't unheard of, but I just don't want to pay for two if my depression can be handled with one. I don't really see the point of taking two if my depression can be handled with one, either... stare

I'm on two mood stabalizers at once (I'm Bipolar II).

It's not uncommon to be on two anti-depressents at once.

meds are ok to stabalise the mood but you really need to go through CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy) for anxiety. It the best way to solve anxiety long term
