If you have a mental illness, imagine this scenario:

You're being rushed into the emergency room for a medical crisis unrelated to your illness. Perhaps you've just been involved in an automobile accident, or suffered a heat stroke. Due to the stress of the situation, you become symptomatic. Perhaps you appear incoherent or even hostile. The emergency room staff, unaware of your mental condition, treat you like a drug addict or assume you have a traumatic brain injury, and begin testing for these while missing the actual problem at hand. Perhaps they even give you drugs that interact with your psychiatric medicines in an effort to find out what is the matter. If you suffer from Schizophrenia, you may also have the common side effect of reduced pain sensitivity, which could lead emergency responders to fail to treat your internal injuries. Worst of all, if you are not directly related to the persons who care for you at home, they will not be notified if you are not in the right mind to help the emergency staff contact them.

The simple solution for this terrifying scenario is for you to wear a MedicAlert emblem on a chain around your wrist or neck. A confidential, 24-hour, emergency response centre will be able to immediately inform emergency room staff about your mental illness, medications, allergies, implanted devices, emergency contacts, insurance information and more.

Service costs $35 a year, but if you can't afford it, they offer offer free memberships for those that are unable to pay the enrollment fee. For more information on sponsored memberships, please contact their Director of Contributions at 800-228-6222 ext. 2466 or email arobinson@medicalert.org. This service is offered in many countries.

What do you think about this program? Would you enroll? Why or why not?

I think it's a smart very good thing to do. I would suggest a lot of people to use it. I would too, but I am currently underage and both parents believe my diagnoses was wrong.

Intersesting service.

Thanks for the info. I'll look into it.

No, I don't think so. I don't have a mental illness where things would be impossible for me to verbalize, and I don't think my medication has any interesting reactions with meds that I would be administered.

It's a great program, but unless something more serious crops up with my brain chemistry than depression and AD/HD, I'll stick with hoping I'll be able to tell people what I need or at least that things they do when I'm unconcious won't hurt me.

I've heard of things like this for people with epilepsy and other conditions like that. If I had something like that, I would probably wear some form of medicalID stuff. I think doctors probably appriciate it!

I forgot to mention that I got my MedicAlert bracelet in the mail! It's very discreet. I got it for free without even having to send them proof of income because I just told them that I'm on state medical coupons. Just thought I'd post an update on here just to show it's possible to get MedicAlert bracelets for mental-illness, and also that they're free if you're disabled.

I'm getting my Medic Alert imprinted with my conditions. Just like the ones everyone else in my family has, (for things like Asthma, Diabetes etc.) This is what they used to do isn't it?
I'm supposed to get one. I really don't care if people know just by looking at a braclet or Necklace 'whats wrong with me'. I'd rather be safer than sorry.

Yep, you can get up to two conditions imprinted on the back of your bracelet. If you have more conditions, they're still listed when the medical personell look up the information. They just list the "worst" ones on the bracelet itself.

About the whole 'are they discreet?' thing, the medical stuff is printed on the back of the braclet, so if someone sees you're wearing one, they'll probably just assume you have asthma.

It's good that you can get them for free if you're disabled. I think you get these things on the NHS in the UK in most cercumstances.

Alex, you're very persuasive, telling people about these. It makes me think you should work in advertising!

well...sorry to go a tad off topic, but...
what would they put for being abnormally hostile?
Or depressive? or suicidal? Or panic attacks? Or just Severe Anxiety? Or large quantities of allergies causing Anaphalaxsis?
This is just out of curiosity... sweatdrop
