*pants heavily*
Wow... alright, I just decided for fun to check out the contest forum to see some of the entries. (gaia videos are fun) xd
Turns out that the whole forum has been taken over by n00bs asking for avatar rates. So I took out my trusty pitchfork and spammed the good n00b population with a quote from the announcement on top that says in caps that this is not the place to get your avatar rated.

But it did make me wonder...
Most of these people didnt know what AT was nore where to find it.
And its true. Its gotten alot harder to find, and by now the people that actually went through the ordeals to find it might have learned abit about how not to be a newb.

I started to report a couple of threads but realised that there wasnt really a point since it wouldnt help in the long run.

So I would like to discuss basically the AT or the lack there of.
It seems that the AT has alot less newbs in all flame pants set asking for rates, this is true. Heck you have a buttload of overly expencive avatars there by now. But at what cost? With the avatar talk so well hidden the newbs have all gathered and gone to invade another forum with their newbish ways.

I personally would like to see the Avatar talk re instated and make it bigger then it was, turn it into a little part of the forum all on its own.

In a way I do see the n00bs thinking, it does say official Gaia contests. And to be fair the avatar areana is a official gaia contest although not the way they ment it.

What are your thoughts on this. Should they keep AT a subforum or give it a full forum status again. Since they have already made a full forum for the Art areana and the video contest they have, why not one for the avatars aswell?

Have you done something uberly newbis or even n00bish in your days here on gaia? Said something abselutely horrible or done something that you wouldnt be cought dead saying today?

I think most AT-ers are happy about that lol but it definitely wouldn't be such a horrible thing if it was it's own forum. Since it's tucked away in GCD which definitely doesn't get as much traffic as GD does (where AT was back in the day).

but alack. oh well.

And i haven't changed much except in age and hopefully GOD PRAY wisdom. i regret nothing! and i'd do everything all over again if i could.

I always got the feeling back when I was an ATer that the community liked the feel like it was a tight knit cult following with the occasional outbreak of flaming over newbs and egos.

The last thing I wanted was AT to go into a sort of elitist status, but if it keep the stereotypical newbie avatars out, so be it.

It was hard back then to make a decent rate me thread and get noticed anyways.

Oh god, for a while there they were REALLY elitist pricks...
I checked back a few months later, and the friendly ones were remaining. I had made a thread before I left...

They were rating people down for being "donation item whores" and whatever else.

I basically told them that they're being retarded ... as long it LOOKS good, what does it friggin' matter?

Et cetera.

But wutev. I haven't been there in ETERNITY.

On a side note, I don't think it's elitist to rate people down for being "donation item whores". I'm always impressed by the avatars I see in the AT, they're unique and very put-together. If you choose to wander into the AT, you probably have to be prepared for avatar experts who practice their "art" and have probably developed a sense for "high" Gaia fashion.

It's like music.
Everybody thinks they have access to it. Everyone feels that they have the right to evaluate what's "good" or "bad" music. So where does that leave the people who actually study HOW it works? They SHOULD be allowed to tell you what's a cliche harmonic progression and what's not, because they recognize it when they hear it. And you don't.

There's always "high-end" culture versus the "low-end" in any field, whether it's art, music, language, fashion or whatever else. Usually the higher world is specialized and inaccessable to the common person. Only people who really take the time to learn and master it will "get" how it works, and since almost no one wants to do that, we write those people off as "elitist pricks" and scoff because we don't understand their advice.

Of course, there's no excuse for the attitude of some of these "elitist pricks"... but that's what you get for being on a teen-dominated forum. A lot of kids are out to fit in or prove something. :0

But back to the AT - I think that if you're happy with how you look, don't go asking for feedback or fishing for compliments from people of a different Gaian culture than you.

i never really went into the AT (but strangely enough, i love going into the arena and giving scathing commentary), so i can't speak to its infestations of newbies or elitists. that said, the reason i never went in in the first place is because i didn't want to get rated by a bunch of fashion snobs and i got the impression that would happen even if you DIDN'T set yourself up for it in a thread. this may or may not be true, but it kept me out, so it may as well have been.

regarding the issue of people who have a right to be elitist, i get that. of course, you also get a lot of jumped-up teenagers who THINK they have earned that right, but have not, and that is more annoying than anything else. if someone's gone to fashion design school, yeah, they do have the right to tell me how to dress (i don't have to follow that advice, but they're better qualified than anyone else to give it). if they're just the self-crowned best dresser in their high school, then no, they need to shut up while the grownups are talking.
i got this impression when i used to go into the writers' forum a few years ago. people were posting unbelievable tripe in there and everyone was patting each other on the back for it, and they looked at me like i was a turbo b***h from hell for calling them on their tired metaphors and overuse of adjectives (not to mention comma drama). you guys. i am not trying to be mean. but if i don't tell you that your piece has no merit, you'll think it does, and that just sets you up for disappointment and humiliation!

the problem with learning from your mistakes is that it requires that you understand you are making mistakes in the first place. this is a necessary, but apparently very difficult, first step for a lot of people.

Even worse, some nooblet reported me for spam when I quoted the rules in her face about how her thread was breaking the rules. sweatdrop

I dont think I would ever call ATers elitist, although the avatars I worked the hardest on got the most horrible critique from there, and then I slapped on basically the silliest thing I could find and got nothing but praise, much to my dismay.

I decided long ago that if I made a avatar then it would be one I liked, not the ATers. I just recently went there again and slapped on a bunch of MC items and got praised to the high heavens, then when I wore what I am wearing now I kept getting things like "nothing matches really". Its not supposed to match! Its clothing that I would consider wearing in RL is all!

Even though the avatar arena is alot more efficient like this I think I preffered the old days. Anyone remember back when Bilious got voted again by the admins? and the abselute row that broke out because of it? Well why not again? Great style shouldnt be put down. I just feel that anything to do with our avatars themselves has kind of gone down.

I've changed a few times. Geez, of course I have, I've been on gaia since i was what, i dunno, when did i start? lemme look up my lorchick account a sec.
woah m'k for some reason it doesn't say. I started soon after gaia did. I was a young little toadie. and i acted it.
I can truly say i'm glad nobody here knows me from the beginning, to bring up embarrassing stories. XD
and then i stopped acting all 'wai wai wai' and retarded and was on obsessively and such, and ppl like Valgav know me from then
and then i got older and gained responsibilities and such
and now i'm barely ever on.

AT annoys me b/c last time I was in there it was like you got rated on the price of your outfit more than anything else.

I have a love/hate relationship with the AT forum. Sometimes I get really good, helpful feedback and a lot of compliments on outfits I work hard to make nice. But sometimes I get comments like "Your eyes don't match the rest of your outfit" or "Perhaps if you added the red mug it would look better". I never understood their obsession with handheld items over in AT. I don't care if that boombox is just the right color for my outfit. It just looks like it's thrown in there because of the color and not because it flows or goes with my theme. D<

And I think I've said before that I'm pretty embarrassed by the way I used to act. I remember how obnoxious and high on myself I was back when I first joined this guild. It's a wonder any of you guys liked me then, really. XD Sometimes I even worry that some people who met me back in the day can't get past their first impression of me and won't give me a chance now that I've grown up a lot.

Meh. I went in to see what people thought. To see if I was dressing myself to what I thought was cool only, or if it was actually... "cool"...

However, at the time, it was that weird... sense of "elitism" at the time. Then it changed to nicer people who were actually helpful. Blah blah.

But again, I've not been there for eternity. Especially since the Avatar Arena came out... I've made it to the top 500 enough to know I got at least a somewhat cool ability of making avatars. cool

But I've stopped caring about that sorts of "How do I compare to other's thoughts?" thing... Take the compliments as they come. Chea.

Muh, I used to hang out in the AT back when Angelic minis had hardly reached the first 100k in price. XD I went back there some months ago and was all WTF by that... "tek tek", was it?

I used to like it there, I had a bunch of friends, and a few threads I hung out in. I hardly ever rated or asked for rates.

But blah, I don't really dare venture out into the forums anymore. they're just too big and overwhelming. talk2hand

I think they should keep the subforum.
