Roommate Ryoko is a classic game for the Japanese Sega Saturn. It was unique at the time for the fact that it used the Saturn's internal clock to play the game in Real Time. Turn on your Saturn at 1am in the morning and it would be the same time in the game world and your roommate (Ryoko) would usually be asleep.
The storyline was basically this. You are a young man living on his own in the family house while your parents are living and working in America. One day Ryoko shows up on the doorstep with the same issue. Your father and hers were best friends in school and she has permission to stay at your house to finish school. You just never got around to checking the letter your father sent you.
From there on the game happens in real time with Ryoko going to school during the day and occasionally having encounters with you if you turn on the Saturn and wander into the right room in the house at the right time.
The game saves automatically after each event so there is no cheating by reseting the internal clock if you find you made a mistake and made Ryoko angry.
The first game lasts over a month and takes place inside the house, but the second and third sequels allow you to leave the house to do stuff with Ryoko and get gradually more dramatic as your relationship strengthens (or not if she gets annoyed and moves out).
The Playstation version of the game lacked the internal clock so Datam Polystar made use of the Pocketstation memory card with its build in clock and the LCD screen so you could keep track of what Ryoko was doing when you were away from home. It also let you see how disappointed and angry she got if you were late for an appointment with her.
