many people say "ignorance is bliss"

What do you think?

i say that bliss is a pathetic cover up, a poor excuse for a person to remain in a pitiful state of stupidity.

personally, i think relaxing, with my favorite tape/cd/LP playing, eyes closed and nothing worrying me, is a form of bliss.

another form of bliss is playing guitar or bass at a show, but since my band fell apart, that doesn't happen very much anymore haha

Interestingly enough, it's quite true. Ignorance is bliss. Not knowing about things that would hurt you to know, means no pain.

BUT, the bliss is incomplete. It isn't all that real. When one knows the hard truths and deals with them, lives past them, the bliss that they come across is much more wholesome and understood.
How can one be truly happy if one has never been sad? It just doesn't add up.

It's also a matter of taste. Some people are great liars, and they can lie to themselves SO well that they are completely fine with ignorance, because deep down they know it's there. Other do not like lying to themselves, and are thus bad at it. They must know the truth, so ignorance is the very opposite of bliss to them. And knowledge is endless... the thirst is rarely fully quenched... but that's another story.

all very good points. there, could be different sources of bliss and for those who wish it ignorance can be a source of limited bliss, like that of a junky who finds bliss in unconsciousness.
but then i wonder would ignorance of a beehive be bliss? lol

Haha..
no, that would be "ouch".

Unless you are SO damn good at lying to yourself, that the beehive and the bee stings arn't there, because you REFUSE to believe it.
but that would mean you are simply crazy. or maybe a genius.

i dont know, i think genius is a term of excellent thinking, a feat such as that would be the mastery of circumstance. or something silly like that.

i posted this question because of a note i took the other day, i am always thinking and writing things in my notebook or on index cards. i wrote this the other day.

How is it that ignorance is bliss?
is ignorance of a beehive bliss?
or ignorance of the laws of nature, spirit, or man bliss?
is ignorance of or in communications bliss?
of these i have doubt.

No, I don't think ignorance of such things is bliss.

I think that term refers to certain facts. Ignorance of things that would hurt one to know is bliss. Like a child being lied to about the death of thier pet, or our ignorance of our eventual death.

Not ALL ignorance is bliss, but indeed the lack of knowledge of certain things does allow us to be happy.
But it doesn't work that way all the time, like i said. Depends on the person.

idk, i know a lot of kids that don't like being lied to about things like the death of a pet...and since death comes for us all, i wonder whether it is moral to lie to children about it, rather than to teach them to cope effectively...

personally, i'd rather know than not know, but that's just me

Just because ignorance is bliss doesent mean that bliss is always ignorance. Bliss could be somthing that a knowledgeable person knows.

what I htink the statement means is very simple.

In the matrix, a man goes out, and finds out that it was better being in teh matrix than in the real world, so he tried to go back without any memories of hte real world. that is a good example I thnink.

Ignoranceis bliss means that somtimes it's better not knowing.

If your mother died of rape, then your father would probably tell you it was of somthign else, because ignorance is bliss. it's better not knowing.

This does not mean that all bliss is ignorance.

You could have a really good day then end it with bliss looking at a sunset, but that doesen't make you ignorant.
