(Maybe lines aren't the best way to put it... Because 15 lines on my computer screen could be different that on yours. Word count is more efficient. And you said "Between one and three paragraphs." If every paragraph was 5-10 lines, (Or sentences as I think you should change it to), then the line limits would be: 5 - 30 instead of 15 - 30.

He looked to the horizon with weary eyes, seeing not the intricate sunset, but a skyline that taunted him with the thought of distant lands. Exile was hard to deal with. But being absolutely restricted from human contact was much worse. He let the sand trickle through his fingers and fall back to the sun burnt beach.

How many grains of sand were there? They covered the ground beneath his feet like the clouds to a stormy sky, and engulfed his toes as he pressed them under the breaking waves. The number of grains of sand brought memories of past mistakes to mind. Numerous enemies he had made among friends; too many to count.

Would he one day end up attempting to count every single piece as his mind drifted from sanity to the irrational thoughts of a lone man? Or would the ornate patterns of the whispering trees bring the disorder of lucidity to him? Would there be a resolution to the life which he was cursed with; this tiny spec of land among the vastness of the oceans?

There were questions. There were answers. But only the waves of the horizon bore the secrets' answers. And one day, the waves were going to crash upon the shore, and tell him all he needed to know. One day, a being of ultimate supremacy was going to decide his final fate. But until then, he had only the trees to listen to, and the ever-distant skyline to struggle against.
