This is the area of the Library that is stocked with books on all types of the mysterious, the unknown, and magic. Everything looks decayed and somehow wrong, though the books are all mysteriously in order. If you are searching for a book, it takes you 2d6 monster checks to find. This is not a safe area and apparitions and monsters of an evil sort appear out of nowhere. Monster checks are made from the Occult Minions table. If you die here, you may not teleport to the Library, only the Cathedral.

Shasta entered an extremely large room from the passageways that networked him here. His initial response was awe- the ceiling was hundreds of feet into the air. Gigantic pillars spiraled all the way up, towering above him. Marveling at the sight of the room he noticed that it wasn’t just a room, but a hallway constructed for giants. He was standing on the ground floor of an alcove in a tremendous hallway. The passages he went through were designed for human-sized creatures, but the doorway to it looked more like a mouse hole in this room. It was like going from a stream to an ocean.

Gigantic, muddy windows brought a faint glow into the room, overlapped by sharp pillars of light that streamed through broken cracks and holes in the windows. A chilled mist hovered in the air; Shasta could just barely see his breath. Depth perception was a little skewed in these environs, causing tricks of the eye. Shasta would not let his guard down, though.

Above him along the walls were built balconies, each full of winding bookshelves. He could hardly make out if they had books on them or not. None of the bookshelves in the rows before him seemed to contain much of interest. It all must have looked like an ornate dollhouse to a giant, once upon a time. Shasta withdrew his map and briefly rechecked it.

“I should be up that way.” Shasta attentively walked up the giant hallway.

At the end of the great hallway was a staircase leading upwards. The steps would normally be too great for a human to scale, but the balconies built along the wall had smaller staircases, interrupted by plateaus for more book shelving, leading up in intervals along the stairs.

Shasta made his way to a large, human-sized staircase that led up through the balconies. He got off at the first floor- no reason to climb more stairs than necessary- while still remaining alert of his surroundings.

As Shasta crept through the winding book cases he heard a low-pitched, gasping sound. Almost as if someone was whimpering. It almost sounded human…

Shasta crept to the end of the bookshelf, hearing the gasps grow louder. It seemed to get more frenetic at times, then subside.

Around the corner of the bookshelf Shasta saw what looked like the shriveled remains of a standing human. It was hunched over, arms quivering at its chest, wondering around seemingly aimlessly. It was shivering violently as if endlessly cold. Its breathing was heavy and raspy, disrupted with each convulsion of its trembling body.

The effects of undeath vary widely; this ghoul seemed to exist only in constant pain. Its body writhed, jerking the monsters head wildly to its side. It was at that moment is sighted Shasta. The monster paused; a pensive expression grew on Shasta’s face.

It charged Shasta in a twitching clamber, but its clumsy, broken body made it slow. Shasta lashed at it with his poisoned blades as it approached.

The attack connected and sent a lash across its face. It reeled back, pawing at the wound. The poison from the blade darkened the ghouls flesh, having negative effects despite its undeath. This wasn’t the first time Shasta’s blood had tainted supernatural flesh.

The ghoul clumsily balanced itself and lashed back at Shasta, making a hoarse gurgling noise.

Shasta: 88 HP
Ghoul: 15 HP

Shasta stepped back from the attack, cleanly dodging it. The ghoul then writhed and choked as the poison from the wound began to burn its flesh. The sight disgusted Shasta; this creature needed to be put down from its misery.

The creature grasped its hands over the wound, providing Shasta with an opportunity to strike again.

Shasta: 88
Ghoul: 5

Shasta swiftly drove his dagger right into the stomach of the ghoul, the poison spreading through its flesh again and staining its tattered clothes. It only choked at the pain this time, a strike that would have caused a human to wail in agony.

The ghoul doubled back momentarily. With a struggled wheeze it swiped at Shasta again.

Shasta: 88
Ghoul: 4

Shasta side-stepped the attack, which instead connected with some tattered papers on some nearby shelving. They scattered onto the floor, crumbling from old age.

The poison in the ghouls stomach began eating away at him, causing it to twist in pain.

The precision of a poisonous strike shouldn’t be necessary for this next attack, the ghoul's breathing had slowed and sounded more exerted. Shasta went for the throat…

eek

The ghoul paused, but moved again. No blood left its wounds- it had all caligulated long ago. Shasta drew back in shock, "Undeath is indeed cruel to you..."

It drew back and swiped at him again.
