Since this deals with hype, but is kinda different, I'll make a new thread. How often do you get hyped/excited over a game but when you finally get it, it's like "Eh.... could have been better..." or "I spent $50 on that?!"
As a gamer, it makes me scared to buy games. xd
After supposedly awesome cames coming out and receiving low/mediocre reviews (i.e. Bullet Witch and Shadowrun) I'm a lot more hesitant when buying games.
Which brings me to the discussion:
How can you predict a game will deliver/phail? Is Bioshock any good? etc, etc.

That's a very iffy decision to make when you determine if a game is good or not. But the main thing that people should be concerned with is their own taste in gaming. Another factor into the equation, is how well a game delivers in what it tries to do. For example, the Final Fantasy Anniversary Edition game for PSP got a 6.0 on average out of 10. What the game meant to do, however, was to improve upon the game's graphics and audio, while it still had the original Final Fantasy feel with the unchanged gameplay and concept. Did it do that? Yes, it lived up to what it was set out to do. That's all that should really matter, is if a game does what it portrays itself to do. Does that help?

Serenata a while ago said that when there was all the hype for Halo 2 he got it and all and he said was disappointed because the hype generated for it wasn't anywheres near how good the game was. (In his opinion). He said he wasn't too impressed with the story and all.
@SveinderGutsNaughty: Agreed. It only matters if I like it. I'm not going to let reviews turn me off from a game when I might like it anyways. It's what I think of it that matters. I've seen games with low scores and I went ahead and bought it and I loved it. If you see a game advertised or announced somewhere and you see it's something you are turned on to, are you gonna change your mind if someone gives it a bad review? You shouldn't. If it turns you on go for it. I bought CD's that have gotten bad reviews and I still like songs on it. Especially when we all know some of the things that are criticized in reviews are petty things that most shouldn't give a care about. I've seen CD's for example be criticized due to the fact it sounds too modern and not the usual sound of the singer. The songs were still great IMO and other's after reading some threads about it. Yet it got low reviews. Sure $50 is on the line but if you are gonna sit there and try to find something wrong with it then do you really want it? Some of the things reviewers criticize shouldn't matter to you and once you read it all of a sudden that matters. If you read what the game is about and that turns you on then you can look at screenshots and see if that appeals to you. You should only look at reviews with a grain of salt. Most people don't care about the petty things they complain about. I've seen low reviews on games that in a single sentence surrounded by criticism that "The game is still fun to play." Now a careful reader and not a skimmer will see that but most will not even see that they said it's fun to play. They only care about the petty things.
Therefore, listen to reviews very seldomly and listen to friend reviews as well but also seldomly but they are better critics than the critics themselves. Make threads about it because that can be useful. When I complete a game I don't think about how it could have been better I think about how it is as it is. You shouldn't over critical on games.

Also, does a game have to receive a 8-10/10 in order for it to be considered a good game? I think not.

Yeah, it's happened to me several times...If I like a series or idea too much, I just buy it...*sigh* That's why I started looking at reviews.
If I game I really want gets a 5/10, I'll definitely rent it first. Better safe then sorry.

I don't base my sole judgment/decision off reviews, but I do like to get their opinion. I hate seeing a game, liking the idea/game play/graphics/company behind it, going out and spending $50-$60 on it and hating it for extremely clunky controls and horrible camera angles, the fact that I can beat it in a day, etc... or the fact it just wasn't a great game.
I do admit some reviews judge too harshly for bad reasons "OMG, MARIO PARTY?!1 1THERE'S ALREADY 10 DO DEM111" But sometimes, the trusted reviewers can give a pretty decent opinion that I agree with 9 times out of 10.
Thanks to Game Rankings, bad reviewers are evened out when a game gets the review it deserves, as all reviews are given a percentage.

HistoryWak Also, does a game have to receive a 8-10/10 in order for it to be considered a good game? I think not. Well, if I should rate it, that's a bit substansard, but oftentimes there a probleth rankings or a game is very personal. Some poeple hate newer sonic games, some love them. Same goes for Boogie I hear.

Some people hate the fact that its another minigame, when in all actually it's not.
It aint a DDR clone eithe, it is its own form of Dancing game, and i really wanna see a Boogie2, this time with Downloadable tracks, Freezpopp, and MORE Daft Punk.
Of Course, I was right, I'm ******** out of my mind....

I personally disregard reviews a lot of the time, I look at previews and videos to forge an opinion on a game if I want it or not. It's from that that I decided I didn't want Bioshock. Eat it, Sheik.
Games like SSBB and Metroid I know will not disappoint.

But if it makes you feel better, Play Magazine gave Lair an 9/10
