A shrill, rolling laugh echoed out across the savanna, causing birds to flee, en masse, from their perches. The laugh, it just so happened, was issued from the mouth of Lolovivi, who at this current point in time was perched at the edge of the waterhole near her den. Her mother had decided she trusted her daughter enough to go to the nearby waterhole on her own. But, and she had emphasized this point quite clearly, only to the waterhole. Lovi didn't care where she was going... it was an excuse to get out and see the world for herself.

She had been laughing because, upon sticking her maw into the water to take a drink, she had come nose to nose with a toad. Many girls might be grossed out by this event... but not Lovi. Lovi thought it was one of the most delightfully hilarious things to happen to her in her rather uneventful life. Which was why, now, she was rolling about in the grass in uncontrolable fits of giggles. Her golden eyes turned on the sky and, seeing the shifting black cloud of fleeing birds, she momentarily quieted.

"Woooowwww..." she breathed. "Did I do that?"

Chafuka was growing quite accustomed to being away from family life. There was such freedom out here, and he was overshadowed by no one. It was such a perfect way to spend his days. Well, almost perfect. There was no one here currently who could appreciate his specialness. Was there no life in this area? No one who could be taught how simply fabulous he was? It was somewhat depressing, and slightly tarnished his view on how wonderful life on his own was. After all.. it wasn't so appealing to be wandering alone in what suddenly seemed like a barren wilderness, wasting his most valuable time doing absolutely nothing.

But then he caught sight of a sparkle of water, and then heard Lolovivi laughing in such a way, and his mood picked up a bit. Someone who could be shown the light! Even if this certain individual didn't sound all that appealing, vocally at least. Perhaps he could just get her to be quiet, while he did all the talking?

He didn't rush as he moved toward the other pup, but his speed increased slightly. He never rushed for anyone. He was too important. But getting others to notice how wonderful he was was also important, and so he balanced the two. He drew close enough to Lovi just in time to hear her speak, and his pale, almost translucent eyes flicked upwards to the mass of birds winging their way to safety. He had to wonder what she'd done to frighten them. Perhaps that garish shrieking sound she'd been making before? He couldn't blame them. It had been rather awful.

"It looks like you did," he said in his typically calm and clear voice, speaking as precisely as possible. One must not slur one's words when one is the epitome of perfection.

Perhaps Hamaki had been slightly misguided in letting her daughter go out on her own. Lolovivi was just a little oblivious. In fact, she hadn't even noticed there was anyone approaching until he was standing right behind her, and speaking.

The moment words came out of Chafuka's mouth, Lolovivi leapt up into a sitting position, flailing wildly. She looked about herself in every direction before twisting about and laying her golden eyes on the other pup. At the sight of him, Lovi sighed with relief and drooped a bit. "You shouldn't sneak up on people like that!" she cried out. "If I was an old lady, you probably would've given me a heart attack or something." Fortunately, Lovi was not an old lady, although she was a little strange sometimes, like she was going senile. Most of this could probably be chalked up to her curiosity and carefree spirit.

For a moment she just sat, catching her breath from being startled so, and looking the male pup up and down. Finally, she pointed at his chest and said the first thing which came to her mind: "I like your necklace."

Well, at least her voice was easier on his delicate ears than her laugh. He just had to avoid saying anything funny, and all would be well. Of course, that was easier said than done, because someone as wonderful as he was obviously full of marvellous jokes and witty anecdotes. He came closer to Lolovivi, looking down at his necklace as she spoke.

"Of course you do," he said in reply, apparently believing she couldn't not like it. "I made it," he continued on, as though that explained everything. And to him, it did. If he made it, it was undoubtedly going to be a perfect piece of jewellery, even if it wasn't all that, say... creative. But he chose not to notice that it was of an almost painfully simple design.

For the time being anyway, Chafuka's conceited comment flew right over Lolovivi's head. All that really got through her head was the second half of his comment. She leapt to her feet in surprise, her face all aglow with delight. "Wow!" she declared. "You made that all by yourself!? That's so cool! I wish I could make jewlery!" She then lapsed briefly into a pout, sulking over this skill she lacked. Maybe, she thought, if she was really nice to this guy, he'd make her some jewlery.

So with a cheerful smile Lovi set herself up at what she felt was a polite and proper distance and held a paw out to shake. "It's really nice to meet you, by the way. My name's Lolovivi. You can shorten that however you want." She was pretty excited, too, to be meeting another wild dog pup who was not one of her brothers.

Gaining praise, the pup puffed up a little bit. Perhaps this female wasn't such a lost cause after all, if she could already see that his jewellery-making abilities were rather good. Especially if she hadn't a clue how to do it herself. It just helped enforce Chafuka's sense of complete and utter superiority. "Yes, well, it's not something just any pup could do." And by that, he meant only he could.

He blinked his pale eyes at her name. Wasn't that a mouthful? And such a lot of unnecessary repetition of syllables. In fact, there were only two of them in the whole name. He decided then and there that he just didn't like it, but managed to keep such an opinion to himself. "Vi. That's what you'll be." It was more appealing than 'Lo', and because of the purple on her, it would be much easier for him to remember. He just hoped she didn't try to shorten his name at any point, after he chose to give it to her. He really hated that.

Lovi's smile practically glittered as she sat before this jewlery-master. She found him fascinating, and therefore she wanted to know everything about him. Lolovivi had found a growing and insatiable need to know everything about anything that interested her. And so she stared intently at the other pup, studying him up and down, and began her interrogation... er... 'conversation'. "So how'd you learn to make jewlery anyway?" she asked him, fixing her eyes again upon his necklace and trying to figure out it's construction. "Is it something someone taught you, or did you just figure it out yourself?"

Her eyes switched back to his face for just a moment, and her head fell sideways into an odd little grin. "Vi? I like it," she said. "It's simple." She seemed to just keep collecting nicknames. First she was Vivi, and then Lovi, and now Vi. She wondered what she would be christened next.

And she wondered when this kid was going to tell her his name, but that question would have to get in line with all the other questions she had to ask him.

As he studied her expression, Chafuka found himself starting to warm up to Lolovivi. Her attention seemed to be fixed on him almost raptly, and that was the sort of thing he thrived on. The few times he'd gotten such attention from either parent, it had lasted only a few moments before one or another of his THOUSAND siblings (slight exaggeration, but he always thought of them irritably) would steal it away by doing something completely and utterly stupid, as was their nature. He was so glad he was away from all that.

Ather question, though, his paw rose off the ground to lightly touch the beads of his necklace, his chest puffing up proudly as he replied, "I taught myself, of course." No one would ever be able to make jewellery as well as he could, of course, so it wasn't a thing that could be taught. In his opinion, at least.

"Well..." he murmured. "Vi makes sense. Vi is short for violet, and you have some of that on you. It's easy to remember." And he firmly believed that was very intelligent of him to think of, even though pretty much anyone could have done it.

Oh, if only Chafuka knew... Oftentimes, Lovi's attention could be fixed just as intently upon a passing bug or interesting blade of grass. As of right now, for Lolovivi, Chafuka was nothing more than another interesting subject of study. Although she was beginning to believe that he was far more interesting than any bug or rodent could be.

She started to circle him, observing his posture and his coat and everything about him that she could take in. "That's amaaaaaaaaazing," she trilled. "I want to learn to make jewlery too. Can you help me learn to make jewlery since you're so good at it?" Her tail lashed, and in her mindset of peace-and-love-and-harmony, she couldn't even fathom his saying no.

She paused in her circling before his face as he explained his reasoning behind her nickname. She beamed at him, and nodded eagerly. "Yup, makes lots of sense! Why, I think it's the second-nicest nickname I've ever been given!" And right then and there, Lovi had no idea of the bombshell she'd just dropped upon this otherwise happy meeting.

The pup raised an eyebrow as Lolovivi began to circle him, his head twisting around to track her progress, trying to fathom just what she was up to, but having little luck with it in the end. He just couldn't think up a reasonable reason why. Well, other than to admire him from every angle, of course, but the look in Vivi's eyes just wasn't an admiring one. He couldn't put his paw on what it was, but it certainly wasn't what he would like to see when she looked at him.

But both his eyebrows climbed up his forehead as she asked to be taught how to make jewellery like his, momentarily surprised (couldn't she see his necklace was obviously made by someone born with the skills?), recovering with a smug smile. "Of course I can't," he said in a superior tone, puffing himself up a bit. "I have a natural talent for making jewellery. It can't be taught."

When Lovi dared, however, to decide his nickname for her as second best to someone else, his eyebrows plummeted to furrow moodily above his pale eyes. "Second?" he demanded in consternation. "Whatever you think was the best, you're wrong! Mine is always the best!" Oh, dear. The petulance his parents had had to deal with on a daily basis had been unleashed, and would not dissipate until he was reassured he was, indeed, the beck nickname-giver there ever was.

Lovi observed the bewilderment and discomfort on Chafuka's face as she circled him, and made a mental note. Interesting, she thought. He doesn't like to be circled. Perhaps it reminds him of vultures? She wondered if everyone had an instinctive fear of being circled, or if it was just him. She'd have to test it later, that was for sure.

And then her circling haulted. He couldn't teach her? She frowned a bit, and narrowed her eyes at him. It couldn't be taught? "That's silly," she blurted out her thoughts aloud. "It's a skill. Any skill can be taught." And before she could elaborate on her thought process, he snapped at her. The startled female pup recoiled from him as he raised his voice. For a moment she just stared...

...but Lovi wasn't about to be pushed around by another pup. She wouldn't stand for it. Certainly she had learned a bit of tenacity from her mother, if only a little bit. She leaned back forward and replied. "Nuh uh! Nobody's always the best at everything! You may be really tallented and really interesting, but you are not always the best!" She reached out a paw to poke him in the nose. "So there."

Stubbornly, the little pup snorted at her. "It's not silly." How could she possibly think that his natural talents could be passed on to those not as fantastic as himself? Clearly, she needed to be educated in how the world worked. It was just so obvious that he would be able to do things others simply couldn't match. "It's natural. I was born being this good; I can't teach you that. Don't be foolish." He eyed her carefully. "Maybe you could learn to make something mediocre, but that's about it." He could be so mean when his specialness was challenged.

His eyes widened as Lovi had the audacity to actually touch him. That was not allowed unless he gave permission! Annoyed, he poked her right back, though he did it on the forehead. He didn't want to get her nose germs on him. "I am! I always have been! I am Chafuka, and I am always the best!" He stared at her through narrowed eyes. "You should just be grateful someone so wonderful is even talking to you."

Lovi stepped back a bit at the prodding, and her little nose wrinkled up in a display of her distaste. "Wonderful people talk to me all the time," insisted Lolovivi. "They're my family, and each one of them is special in their own way." She was about done arguing the necklace issue. Someday, she'd make a really beautiful, meaningful necklace, then she'd show 'im. The little black pup's heart was usually just so full of love, she was rather surprised at herself at how quickly she was losing her patience with him.

Wait... love...

That must be it! Lovi's gold eyes widened in realization. Why, poor Chafuka must need to love himself extra hard... because he wasn't getting enough love from others. Her curiosity rekindled, the female pup slid back closer to her study subject. "Speaking of family... how big is yours?" she fixed her eyes right on his. "You have a lot of brothers and sisters, don't you?"

The pale pup snorted derisively at the mention of family. He didn't really have a high opinion of all that. Not after he'd been mistreated so terribly by them all. Even his own siblings had been terrible and ignored him. They had been too interested in looking at rocks as though they were actually worth looking at and doing everything they possibly could to look like fools. As though any of that came close to being as important as the things he chose to do with his day. Vivi's stupid remark wasn't even worth a comment from him, and so the white pup turned his head away from her in disinterest.

Then he gave her a nasty glare out the corner of his eye, sneering. "That's none of your business," he said haughtily, turning even further away from her and flicking his tail in distaste. He really, really didn't want to talk about his family. He didn't even wanted to be reminded that they were related to him at this point in his self-important, over-inflated life.

Lolovivi shuffled back from Chafuka, giving him some space, and frowned decisively. Poor boy. Where just a second ago, the female pup had been intensely frustrated with her company, now she felt sorry for him. It was very clear to her from Chafuka's cold shoulder and now tense demeanor that family was a sensitive subject for the boy. The poor thing, ignored amongst a many, having to create his own sense of self-worth to compensate.

So... though she knew someday he'd have to grow out of it... for now... she fed his ego. She brightened as best she could and approached cautiously, even as she was reprimanded. "I'm sorry," she said in earnest. "They probably just don't realize how genuinely amazing you really are." She nodded firmly to emphasize this. "Because you really are wonderful." And she was really coming to think so too. He was wonderful, and deserved to be loved... she just wished he wasn't so full of himself. That would make it a lot easier. But Lolovivi would try her hardest anyway, because after all... love made the world go 'round.
