I’ll start by introducing myself, I am Skizio, and I’m going to post some of my ideas on noobs, and this guild.

Why do noobs target the ED?
Well, lets begin with just simply newbs, who are simply new. I think that a considerable amount of spamming incidents occur because they simply don’t know. I decided at one point, to send a PM to someone who had spammed the GCD, and judging by her reaction, she clearly had no idea, and thanked me.

Now an even larger portion of spammers and trolls do it for the satisfaction of pissing a bunch of people off. They are fed, by the signs people post, ex. GTFO NOOB. That satisfaction is probably what drives them. On the other hand, if they received ABSOLUTELY NO REACTION, than the amount would probably decrease. Even a simple reaction such as “wrong forum” could encourage them.
So in short, ignoring them will make them decrease significantly.

Why do they do it?
I won’t spend a long time on this one – nobody knows them on the internet, so they can be as annoying and idiotic as they please. Doesn’t happen to everyone but there are those people who are asses like that. In conclusion, I don’t think a low IQ is responsible for this.

So…this guild?
I remember when I was a wee little newbie, stumbling across this very guild, and seeing “GTFO” banners, made to insult people posting crap in the ED. I thought to myself that this guild was only contributing to the problem… but it seems that the guild has taken a new position, and now discourages things like that. I joined hoping to debate that very thing, but thankfully it is gone.

But there is one thing I think about this guild – it’s that it can’t do s**t about the problems we have on Gaia. Gaia is currently experiencing an influx of members, and as that number continues to grow, more noobs will come into the picture. It would be nice if the topics they made were reported and left alone, but that’s not so. I don’t mean offense to the people who created this guild, but honestly you’re fighting a loosing battle. I wouldn’t waste my time with this, instead I would dedicate this guild to art, music, literature, and debate. Make it a haven from noobs, (which is why guilds were made in the first place) ;D

So that’s my opinion – I was going to argue the pointlessness of those GTFO banners, but thankfully, they’re gone now.

But if you guys have concrete ways to help the problem please tell me, I’d love to help.
(other than reporting, that’s a given).

To your first point:
Quote:
First, refer to the below answer for a background on all types of 'n00bs.' So why is it that so many spam the ED? Well, in all actuality, not that many n00bs do. The ED is truly the only forum in the uppermost category (The Gaia Online category) where a n00b or new member could really cause a disturbance, and thus is where their presence is most widely noted. Some are just new members that, not knowing any better, clicked on the first forum that they saw and posted to try to get some more gold. Others, the n00bs and trolls, deliberately target this forum exclusively for the violent and vehement reaction that their spam will garner.

To your second point:
Quote:
Well, it largely depends on the individual and no single, universal meaning can be assigned to explain their actions. Rather, they can be further classified into various sects (as in a class or kind of person, not a religious order). Some motivational factors could be defined as:
  • Perhaps the most prevalent factor among true n00bs is simply a lack of information else the motivation or drive to expend the energy necessary to determine where to place a post. In such cases, the user will generally pick a forum at random, completely ignoring the forum rules or "stickies" located at the top of the page in his or her endeavour for the instant gratification of creating a topic.
  • Tailing the above group are those who know exactly what it is that they are doing, but simply do not care. This can be caused either by the mild mental retardation commonly seen in "n00bs" or other cause of impaired judgment. If neither of the above, then the poster is likely trying to garner attention in what they perceive to be the most becoming way possible.
  • Third would be the trolls. Though a dying breed (by this I mean that most "trolls" are simply glorified n00bs who are posting nonsense), trolls are nonetheless prevalent in today's online society. They can typically be classified by posts either containing perverse images or other inflammatory or derogatory content.
  • And finally, perhaps the smallest sect; a subdivision of trolls. These are classified as those who unknowingly post content that could be classified as "trolling" out of stupidity rather than out of malicious intent. These are those in society who are destined to work behind the counter of a McDonald's for all of thirty years.

A slight addition I would like to add to this are those that are simply empowered by the idea of complete anonymity and a massive audience to appeal to.

And to your third point:
Quote:
Ah, yes, the 'GTFO, FOO!' banners... In our earlier stages we half-heartedly supported the use of such if the poster was obviously a troll, however, we have since abolished the entire practise and strongly urge our members to report and leave. The only exception to such is if the poster is clearly a newer member and does not know better. In these cases, we ask that any who may stumble upon the topic kindly point the user in the right direction and step aside of the waves of flamers that will descend upon the poor soul.

Admittedly, yes, we are fighting a loosing battle and we know it. Why do we still fight it? Because it is, in our opinion, the right thing to do. Sure, we may well end up being completely overrun by idiots in time, however that does not mean that we shouldn't resist it. Right now our only hope is reporting, but we are soon looking to recruit some forum moderators and hopefully get one or two of the guild staff promoted to a moderator position, if not only a moderator assistant (such as Atropos Kay).

Other than that, we welcome you to the guild and hope to see you around our personal ED, if nowhere else. If you have any questions, feel free to direct them to either myself else another staff member.

I'm not going to perform surgery on your points, since our beliefs on this subject are for the most part the same. It's great you decided to get rid of those banners.

It is the right thing to do, but personally I would not overextend myself trying to make things better - although I report everything I see, and sometimes go out of my way to help a newbie. If the noob problem became a big one, to the point where I'd have to dig through spam to get to an intelligent response, than I would retreat to a nice guild like this, and stay here until I chose to quit. 3nodding
