Poetry

This thread should serve to poetry discussion. Do you read poetry? Do you prefer a typical poetry style?
Do you have favorite poets?
Do you think poetry still have a part in our modern world?

Feel free to post.

I don't read poetry as often as I read novels. Honestly, I've never felt that poetry was something that was meant to be read in the same way that people read stories. Poetry is meant to be heard - so you need to read it aloud.

My favorite style of poetry to read seems to be the classical styles - sonnets, rhyming couplets - that sort of thing. However, I write blank verse - which should never be confused with the free verse style so many people seem to favor nowadays. My poems have meter, just not rhyme.

I've written a few rhyming poems, but usually I feel cramped trying to force the words to rhyme. I think part of the reason why I like Shakespeare and Poe (my two favorite poets) so much is that they didn't sacrifice meaning for the sake of rhyme.

Poetry will always have a place in the modern world. People might not read or recite poems as often as they have in the past, but song lyrics are poems set to music. Everytime you listen to the radio or your favorite muscal artist - you're hearing a form of poetry. When I listen to songs, it's always the words that hit me. If the lyrics speak to me, I like the song. If the lyrics are trite or meaningless, it won't matter how good the background is.

As regards me, I love poetry. I even write it myself. Mostly I appreciate Shakespeare's sonnets, then I am a big fan of Charles Baudelaire and Arthur Rimbaud. Both they are symbolists, French.

I write freestyle poetry. I don't feel it is necessary to limit oneself to certain way of writing. If my poems end up having some sort of form, it is completely sub-conscious, which is what prefer. I never focus to hard when I write, that is when I write my best. My favorite poet would have to be Poe, I love his style and his wording. He's incredible.
