I am in need of a better way to listen to music than carrying around a CD player. I'm looking at Zunes and iPods.

Zune has a radio, I don't have to convert my music files, and it's got a bigger screen than the iPod. Zune also comes in five colors.

However, for only $50 more, I can get more than double that file capacity (though, I doubt I'd ever use that much, so why bother?), the iPod is thinner, it's lighter, it's got double the battery life. But, like I said before, I'd have to either convert my files, which makes them sound like crap, or re-rip all my songs, which would take forever.

I've heard lots of Apple junkies talk about how easy to use the iPod is. However, my expirience with Apple's "ease of use" is that it's not simpler, it's just got less buttons, so you have to actually do more work to get the same thing done.

What do you guys think? Has anyone heard about some next generation Zune that's supposed to be coming out? Does anyone have expirience with both devices?

I got an iPod, and had no choice in the matter, idk what Zunes are but I'm quite happy with my iPod.
Converting doesn't take such a long time and allows more room for tunes, I do agree on the sound quality thing though which sucks, but it's how you can store more music.
I don't know how much music you have but so far I've used 17GB (around 4500 songs) worth of music on my iPod and 3.64GB for videos (which are mp4's so it's a lot smaller, I have 12 movies, 4 music videos, 2 clips, and a king of the hill episode on it)
I'm happy with my iPod but if you're not looking for space then go for the Zune, though if you convert the wmv's right you get basically the same sound quality but in mp3 format.

IMO, the Ipod is all around a better buy. Lighter and thinner is a pretty important factor for me, and is part of the reason why the Zune turns me off. Battery life is also important, and the Zune falls short big time on that front (though the Ipod isn't exactly awesome). The extra capacity is a nice perk, even if you don't think you'll need it, it's good to not have to worry about having enough space. As far as compression goes, it really doesn't seem like that big a deal. I've heard both, and the difference isn't that big. This is just my opinion though, and depending on what's most important you should decide.

I don't need to compress anything, all my music is WMA so it's conversion from one compressed file type to another. It really makes it sound like crap. And, I've got really sensitive ears, so that little bit to most people is a lot to me.

The Zune has 30 gigs, but the new iPod has 80 for fifty bucks more.

Over the summer I actually worked helping out the sound guys for our local concerts and I have to admit, if you tried blasting an mp3 out of the speakers it sounded hollow and horrible. However, I think that if you're just listening to music with earbuds or something, it's not like the speakers are going to give you a full sound experience. But if you're the kind of person that needs their music full and rich and you're getting some really good earphones or whatnot, you may want to chose Zune from the sounds of it.

From Hell's Heart, I Stab at Thee

I would advise you to stay away from Ipods in my experience. There are other companies that produce superior alternatives. For example, I own an Olympus M-Robe, Now I dont have any use at all for the capacity your speaking of, the level I have is 5gb, but its not much more for a higher capacity.

The M-robe plays WMA files and MP3's, the interface on the pc is easy to use, the device itself is very pretty, and It cost me £65. Now, I know out exchange rates are mad at the moment, but I know that its not £130 to get one over there.

Seriously, Forget apple, look at other companies. Olympus, Samsung etc, they all produce superior devices.

For Hate's Sake, I spit my Last Breath at Thee
