Other than small, sucky flash ones, all others need either DLing or buying.
Only "good" one out there is DragonQuest. But it's not multiplayer.

-Well only runescape, but it sucks. Its just doing the same thing over again. Yeah, my advice is, play singleplayer games. I find AI a much worthyer foe than anything else i kicked the crap outta (- 5 % of 1337 Hax0rz) ...

Advantage of "boring" and "repetitive" games online is that they let you do other things. Well, depends on the class you choose and how good you are, but I can watch TV while playing Conquer with the melee classes.
Runescape isn't too repetitive, it's got lots of things to do, but the caracters move like paralitic mules, and stuff is one hour away from each other (mines->smithing, fodd->kitchens and so on.)
But all the good MMORPGs and MMOs around require downloading. And most require you to pay for items to actually enjoy it if you suck (i.e. Conquer. Most losers in that game dish out dozens of dollars to get gear a bit better than I have by just hunting. rolleyes )

I think Polaris' advice is good... Specially after playing Oblivion.
Just get a decent-to-good computer, install the game, and forget about the idiotic n00bs running around MMORPGs.
Because seriously... Does Runescape have over seventy dungeons (and you can always download more of them when you're bored, user-made but most are good enough for a few minutes of crawling.)
Does World of Warcraft have flaming dogs falling from the sky or randomly spawning portals to hell? Do NPCs say more than "hi," "bye" and "welcome to windia?"* Or sidequests that are longer than the main quest itself? (Oh wait, WoW doesn't have quests, it has "you need to pay a hundred bucks to get the gear required to complete this mission")
Does PoTC online have mobs that level up along with you? (Seriously. Fight bandits at level 1, and they have fur armors and a rusty dagger. Fight the same bandits later on, at level 20, and they've got glass/mythril armors and elven swords enchanted with +20 fire damage.)
Nothing can really beat a game like that, where you can't overpower your enemies (unless you play it in easy, or use cheat codes. In that case, you're doing it wrong.)
And it's even got a spell that leaves people in their underwear, and a club which randomly polymorphs monsters (turning a small rat into a giant ice golem = win) And you can be a vile criminal and kill everything and everyone (though it will often end up with you in jail, or you smashed to a pulp by a crowd of twenty town guards.)
So yep, this one doesn't need any download to work. It's not online, but it makes "wonderful" worlds like WoW or other 3D patchwork MMOs look like they're stuff right out of an Atari 2600. "I see your stupid sexy sucubi expansion and counter it with the built-in moving eyelashes, realistic lighting, trees and grass with shadows, and 100+ square miles of terrain to explore."
*Don't worry if you don't get that one. It's an oldskool RPGer injoke.

I don't think there are many that don't require downloads (if any). Adventure Quest is a good one, but get's a little boring after a while. If you don't mind extremely lame puns and stick figure animation, then try "Kingdom of Loathing". (it's a www2) It does get boring even faster then battleon though. If your looking for good flash games, they are extremely hard to find. Though I would try ---http://www.addictinggames.com/archives.html--- I like "cubefield" and "tactical assasin". One they don't have is "PPGD Battle in megaville". It probably has some of the best animation of almost any flash game. (none of them are multiplayer though) If you don't mind using at least a little space on your hard drive and like fighting games, then I recommend "M.U.G.E.N." It's a pretty good offline fighting game and you can add caractars from a ton of anime shows yourself. just do a search for "winmugen". I would check out the flash video install instuctions for people that are new to it though. (it's great, even has audio) ---http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JfYt0coRqHY&feature=related--- Other then that I've got nothing (so good luck).

You could go to either DragonFable or MechQuest if you're interested in adventure and fighting monsters or robots.

I would stay away from the Adventure Quest and other games made by those people. They give you a taste of their crap for free but you have to spend money if you want any of the good stuff the games have to offer. Money that is better used on games that are actually good.

Just like Pox Nora, the 'free' card strategy game. They give you two sets of crappy cards when you sign up and when (IF) you win, you get shitty cards that won't really help at all. Only way to solve this is to buy good sets of cards, of course.
So, free to play? No, free to suck, that's how many MMOs are.
As for AQ and DragonFable, they're actually bad games. Basic RPGs done for computers of 20 years ago had far more flexibility for classes and better graphics. When a game done in the 21st century's like that, you know what "suck-a** programmer" means. I'm looking at you too, RuneSuckScape....

Er, if you want something more unconventional, there's always applications. Like for Facebook. :/ I know there's some games, but they tend to not be very exciting.
