My BFF's been recording kids for a while and he wants to start making and distributing their s**t. I didn't put this in the DIY thread because I don't know how often people check it. Suggestions for places to have CDs and records pressed or cheap ways to do nice CDs yourself and anything else that would be handy to know would be appreciated. There's only so much I can find with Google and I'd rather have somebody tell me what's good and what's not, y'know?

Yeah, definately. We're still working out all of the different means of fund raising we can do to get this s**t off the ground. Best idea so far's been taking a kissing booth to every show we can.

http://plan-it-x.com/links.html

links to the companies pix works with. I could talk to my friend guido(who runs a really awesome label out of miami) and see who he works with. though I know he does the vast majority of the work himself.

How many cds (or vinyl?) per band is he expecting to press?

We'd looked at Bellwether because I'd seen the link on the PIX site. He's only recorded two bands that he thinks will need anywhere near 500 copies of whatever they decide to sell, so he's looking for alternatives or ways to do the CDs himself but still have them be professional quality.

if you want to rasie money you should have a bake sale and go to an area with a bunch of fat kids you'd make money fast that way

with records, you might want to do a thousand run. there are lots of set up costs, and after a thousand you need a new stamo, so your going to have to pay those set up costs again, if that makes any sence.
the p-i-x links are a good place to start for most everything. for cds, check the ads in tape op, an awesome free recording magazine.
as for packaging, there are a million things you can do to cut costs for your packaging, and make awesome diy products.
for 7" covers you can go to a post office and take as many of the USPS Express envelopes as you can. you can turn these inside out, silk screen the blank side, and they make great 7" covers. plus, they are free.
for cd cases just go to a blockbuster video dumpster. chances are, you will find hundreads of used dvd jewl cases. you can also use small paper bags you''d get from a grocrey store.

ive been looking at vinyl prices recently, and it dosent seem so bad. i really want to try doing a small little label of my own, but am currently part of jobless crew so that wouldnt work out. id really like to put out a 7" for my friends band at first if i was to do it, apeshit (http://www.myspace.com/apeshithc) kids love em, they are awesome, a bunch of nice kids. i could probobly give them half of the 7"'s for free, sell the rest, and make some money to put out another 7". i really want to do this.

well my dad used to have a label called livewire but it eventually got put out of business because its distributor. i don't really know to much about it cause it all happened when i was about 4. but for self made cds this band from san antonio called Total 13 just did their s**t on a computer and printed their cover and top of the cd on. really cheaply done, but it still sounds amazing.
