I am a sophomore in college. School is very stressful for me. Currently, I am not attending due to a series of surgeries, so I'm on a leave of absence. I'm just curious as to how you guys have dealt with schooling, and if you have any tips for me.

So far my son is just in preschool, so I personally don't have any pointers yet... But I want to wish you good luck with your surgeries and schooling. 3nodding whee

Thanks Sans. The surgery shouldn't be too bad. I just don't know what to do to make school less stressful.

If you can figure out exactly what bothers you, you can come up with a coping strategy to help you deal with them. Well, its just and idea anyway... sweatdrop

I have a test phobia. I can't stand deadlines. And then there's people. It's mostly the tests and deadlines that freak me out though. Things pile up, then I look at how much I have to do, and I panic, then I'm paralyzed to do anything. Then I have more things to do. Vicious circle and all, it sucks.

Yeah, I'm a huge procrastinator so can feel where you're coming from. I've had a lot of anxiety issues in the past that I've had to overcome. Maybe you can set up some sort of routine to keep you from falling behind and to help prepare you for your tests. You should consider talking to your teacher about preparing for tests. Usually, if you come to them with that sort of thing they are more than happy to help. It also shows them that you are putting some effort into it. Ask them what to study and what to expect on the test. I think maybe if you felt more prepared for your tests you wouldn't worry so much, or at least be able to rationalize with yourself about it. "I studied hard for this test, so I should do well. If I don't, I know I tried my best." Or that sort of reasoning. Also, when I was in highschool I had a lot of issues with people and school stressing me out. One thing that helped me was to briefly excuse myself during class to "go to the restroom." Nobody is there in the middle of class, and you can take a few minutes to collect your thoughts. 3nodding You could always explain to your teacher what happened later.

Yeah, I have talked to my professors, they all know the situation. But even a test that is 'what is your name? What is your favorite color?' would stress me out. It's not the content, it's just the fact that it's a test. If you gave me the exact same paper and told me it was homework, but I can't look in my book or online or ask anyone, then I'd do great on it. Maybe I should just trick myself into thinking tests are homework.

I know it's an irrational fear, as all phobias are, but I'm still scared. I do much better though when tests aren't timed. I've got it set up at school so that I don't have timed tests anymore, and that helps.

I hate the timed ones too... but thats just because I'm pokey lol... A lot of fears are irrational. I personally hate shots, IV's, etc. Its like your skin is being violated... eugh... I can't tell you how many times I've nearly fainted getting my blood drawn, its so embarrassing... I even got light headed getting my ears pierced. Anyway, sometimes it helps to just figure out what it is about something that bothers you. I think its a good starting point anyway. That way you can trick yourself into thinking about it a different way. I dunno, just a thought.

I'm really weird about it. I have a heart that is literally two sizes too small, so when I get cut, I don't bleed, because I have really low blood pressure. So I get excited when they take my blood, because I never see it. That and I'm a bio major, so I think blood is really cool. It sounds more morbid than it is, I'm not some kind of crazy goth chick that thinks she's a vampire. I just find the circulatory system fascinating.

Haha, yeah, theres nothing logical at all about my little phobia. I don't mind getting cut, or even getting my ears pierced... Just something about shots and getting my blood drawn makes me squirm... sweatdrop xp Its like the needle is violating my skin and veins or something. ugh.

I'm transferring to Cornell College. Not Cornell University, in Ithica. It has classes one course at a time. Three and a half weeks of intensive study on one subject, a four day break, then a new course! I think this will work very well for me.

I have never been in a surgery, so that, I can't help you much.I was in school once and how I dealt with it was stupid at first, as I did keep things to myself. However, my stress( I believe that was what it was) manifested in voices of evil malevolence that tempted me to kill, hurt and murder people. Fortunately I went to see a psychiatrist who never gave me any" horror meds" but gave me lots of good advice. and anyway, meditation is good or you could listen to soothing music. and yes, the voices have vanished.
Not sure if this helps, but oh well.
