ok so lets sy you have our the following:
dream stalker who is a 1/5 , crafty pathmage 1/1 and, merfolk thaumaturgist a 1/2.
crafty pathmage can make a creature with a power of 2 or less unblockable. now you use it on the 1/5. then you use the merfolk who can switch a creature's power and toughness on the 1/5 to make him a 5/1. is he still unblockable?[/b]
The simple answer is yes.
The Complicated Answer:
If you resolve it all like that, it works. However if you it in response to each ability being put on the stack, then it does not work.
The effect of Crafty Pathmage checks the power of the Creature at 2 places. Once to activate the ability and Once upon Resolution. Notice that the Pathmage does not say "
Target Creature is unblockable as long as it's power is 2 or less this turn" but "
Target creature with power 2 or less is unblockable this turn".
What this means is that when you use the Crafty Pathmage, the Pathmage says "yep, your power is 2 or less." You pass priority to your opponent, your opponent passes it back to you. aka You say "good?", he says "yes". Ability resolves and the Crafty Pathmage makes the creature unblockable.
Done Deal, Can't be changed unless it switches zones (momentary blink and the like) or another card "blocks it" like
Curtain of Light.
The second part of this you know. The Merfolk switches the Creature's P/T but doesn't change the fact that the Creature "became unblockable".
This is how the stack will look like:
Pathmage Activation : Target Dream Stalker
Pathmage Activation : Resolves (Dream Stalker becomes Unblockable)
Merfolk Activation : Target Dream Stalker
Merfolk Activation : Resolves (Dream Stalker becomes a 5/1)
Now if you did this in response the Stack would look something like this:
Pathmage Activation : Target Dream Stalker
Merfolk Activation : Target Dream Stalker
Merfolk Activation : Resolves (Dream Stalker becomes a 5/1)
Pathmage Activation : Countered upon Resolution (Dream Stalker's Power is not 2 or less).
As I said, Complicated but Exact.
