Okay, perhaps I am the only one. Perhaps I listen to the DVD commentary a little too often. Did the Season Six episode Normal Again leave anyone else wondering if the Buffyverse really was all in her head? That perhaps she made a concious (subconcious?) decision to stay in the insanity of Sunnydale as opposed to dealing with the reality of her parents divorce? Or did you come out of watching that episode feeling that, yes. It really was a demonic thing that caused her to think she was in an asylum?

I thought that it couldn't be all in her head because 6 years of everything Buffy and the Scoobies have been through with Angelus, Glory, Dawn, and people dying and then it was all in Buffy's head? I don't think that would have been a good ending of season 6 or any season for that matter. It was good how the writer Diego Gutierrez left you wondering.

I think that was the point of the episode. To leave you wondering. I believe if I'm not mistaken, that is even mentioned in the episode commentary. I really need to dust off my DVD's and have a Buffy-a-thon again.

Hmm for some reason I recall there's another thread about this somewhere in here. I don't know, I remember posting in another topic under the same idea.

Well, I'll just say what I said in the another thread, I wouldn't have liked the idea that it was all in Buffy's head. I mean, she met her two best friends (willow, Xander) and experienced so much. If it was all just a weird thing she created mentally in her head, I think it would be both kinda sad and a little pointless. All she had gone through was just fake? It would have been upsetting. I will admitt, it was weird watching it though (it came on today actually!) and it did make me wonder....
But I want to think that it was all just the demon making her see all of that.

I keep on going back and forth on the idea if its in her head or not. It really confused me.

It is possible that both universes are real!!!

Afterall, there is the theory of infinite universes, which can be interpreted as meaning everything that possibly could happen does happen. That means that the entire Buffyverse could actually be real on a theoretical standpoint, which is a very nice idea.

Perhaps, Buffy had been straddling two different dimensions, or was merely an observer in the second dimension (a kind of out of body type phenominon), or any one of other explanations I've left out.

Anyway, this is all theoretical, but the fact that Anya created an entirely different dimension in which Buffy never came to Sunnydale lends credence to this possibility in terms of the Buffyverse...

Oooh. Good point. I wonder if the 'dimension' where she was in the asylum was the one without shrimp. wink

Thing is if it really all was just Buffy's imagination then how did so many things happen that hurted her and were complete shocks to her. Because surely if she had created them in her mind she would have some form of recognition or knowing about what was happening.

It did leave me wondering...I once read a really exceptional fanfic about that episode--where her and Spike were both patients at the same hospital, sharing th same dilusion, and it really makes you think about it...I it is called Folie a Deux and can be found at fanfiction.net

Shrimp world. Heh. xd

Yes, I agree here as well. While the Sunnydale reality was most likely the original one, due to all the contradictions and paradoxes that would have to be overcome if this was not the case, I also believe that a second reality was created in that episode.

I still wonder about that episode. confused I like the idea that there was a dimension where Buffy was really in the asylum and she was fading in and out of the two dimensions.

I loved that episode. It was awesome. It left me wondering but never in a bad way.

yeah it has left me pondering but after much extencive thought i think that it was the demon that made her think she was in an asilum.
