I think the most important part of worshipping Mel is knowing more about him. Without looking anything up about him, who can tell me where he was born? Or when? Or what his birth name was? Not many I bet. So let's get to his bio and learn about our Mel and Saviour.
To begin, Mel Brooks wasn't born Mel Brooks at all! He was born Melvin Kaminsky in Brooklyn, New York on June 28th, 1926.
He was married twice, once to Flornece Baum, 1951-1961, and had 3 children: Stefanie, Nicholas, and Eddie.
Second marriage was to Anne Bancroft, 1964- June 2005 (when she died), where they had a son named Max.
All of his movies feature him SOMEwhere. Even if for a small bit.
He served as an Army combat engineer, defusing landmines, as a corporal in North Africa during World War 2.
His stagename, Brooks, is a play off his mother's maiden name, Brookman.
He is one of the few people to win an Oscar, Emmy, Grammy, and Tony award. the Oscar was for his 1968 movie, "The Producers", 3 Emmys for his guest appearances on the tv show "Mad About You" as Uncle Phil, 3 Tonys for "The Producers", and 3 Grammys for Best Spoken Comedy Album ("The 2000 Year Old Man In The Year 2000" [1998, with Carl Reiner]) and two for The Producers ((2001): Best Musical Show Album (as composer/lyricist) and Best Long Form Music Video (as artist)).
Named one of E!'s "Top 20 Entertainers of 2001" (although it should be changed to "of all time")
Named one of People Magazine's "25 Most Intriguing People of 2001".
According to his 1975 Playboy interview, Mel's favorite candy is Raisinets
He's a great fan of Russian Literature.
Always includes some kind of Jewish joke in his movies.
And has attended Alfred Hitchcock's funeral.
Has starred in 35 productions, written for 32 items of interest, has produced 18 productions, directed 13 items, and has mentions and clips and over 100 other items he had a hand in or starred in.
He was quoted saying this: "Look at Jewish history. Unrelieved lamenting would be intolerable. So, for every ten Jews beating their breasts, God designated one to be crazy and amuse the breast-beaters. By the time I was five I knew I was that one."
And even though we all laud him as a genius, he takes the more modest approach: "Oh, I'm not a true genius. I'm a near genius. I would say I'm a short genius. I'd rather be tall and normal than a short genius"
And at 81 (as of December 29, 2007), he's working hard at writing, and producing, and starring, and directing the ever anticipated...
