I don't really see a difference but I've heard about that music thing too. Then, I guess I'd be gothic because I have the state of mind and everything but I don't listen to goth music. In fact, I listen to what they call "poser music"... like nightwish and evanescence and many other bands like that.

actually there's really no such thing as a goth.... xd they were german ppl that were called goths and that's were the goth thing started.

"There's no such thing..." "they were German people..."? Come on, contradiction-central. But yes, they were what we now recognize as the Germans. (And yes, I altered the grammar to prevent having to hurt myself.) As for the distinction, it depends on who you ask. There's an amazing phenomenon in Gothic subculture that seems to take everyone by surprise: an outsider is "not 'goth/gothic' for X reason", but once you make yourself an insider, you're good to go. That is, you CANNOT be Goth/Gothic unless someone says you are - but it's not really how the system works. Let's start with basics of grammar: "goth" is either an adjective or a noun, but "gothic" is simply an adjective. As for which is appropriate, even Voltaire had an issue with that when writing " What is Goth?". So, I'd say: use your best judgement. In most cases, as my mind would place it (although I've done a heap of research, it's been four months, so forgive my mistakes), "Goth" is a person who is "Gothic". For further explanations of such, as given my compiled research, PM me. Or Google it. That should work, too.

Also gothic is the state of mind and so on that Yami_no_tengoku named. While goth is a sub-culter of gothic. Other ones would be: kitty, glamer, gliter, plastic, graver, cyber/industrial, vampire, perky, and so on.
