What's everyones experience with Totems?
Recently one has popped up, that really reminds me how totems can't exactly be chosen, but they choose you. They don't care if they are "cool", or popular within our human system. But I think many people consciously or subconsciously choose their totems and guides, but really they are going about it the wrong way.
My current one is the Crocodile. From what I've been reading about it, it sort of makes sense. But has anyone else had an 'odd-ball' type totem in the past?

Yet another thing I'll probably never know.

Hm.. I don't believe totems are something a part of ones personality, rather a symbol or representative of what you may need to investigate, or learn. Either about yourself, or others. It can guide you this way.
Totems are typically separate than your person. So to say 'it fits me so well', is to say that it is something a part of you... Yet, it shouldn't be. Unless your totem is also your phenotype, if a therianthrope.

I may have had some experiences, I'm not particularly sure. I've found more (what I think are the likely) totems of other people then I've had luck with my own, I think.
After enough arguing one whats what, I'm too tired to explain why I'm so vague. Its the perfect response. I think.

Then it changed to a rat. ;o It may have changed again to Dogs.
;;o.o They change a lot for me because when I figure out what they're trying to say I try to fix that aspect of my life.
n.n As for a symbol, the Dog would represent me the best.

I haven't really discovered mine. My roommate, a medium, keeps associating me with birds, particularly hawks, but I hate birds. I've been attacked by just about every bird I've every met.

That's funny. I heard somewhere that sometimes the animals you associate with are the ones you hate, or the ones that hate you and are likely to attack you.

And theres birds around LadyAnubis' avatar. Woo.
Part of the whole totem thing, according to a large enough number of people to be worth considering, is that it isn't limited to animals someone likes. Blah blah, had a teacher who was given a large number of elephant related things but didn't like elephants blah blah, I'm not really going to try to list off "cases" that may have some possible relation.

I had always been under the impression that a totem was an animal that you identified with on some level. I hate birds (pictures are okay, though).

LadyAnubis I had always been under the impression that a totem was an animal that you identified with on some level. I hate birds (pictures are okay, though). Nope. Although some do, its not the basis of a totem. Animal identity only, runs into being a furry. Going deeper than that, with a deeper definition, it runs into being a therianthrope (or a Were-animal). Also, it may also run into the subject of Daemonism, or an animal representation of your personality and in essence soul. But should not be confused with therianthropy. Sometimes totems are used to represent a group of people or clan. But they are also sort of representative spirits 'sent' to you to learn something in life.

Well, going with Totem Animals being permanent with one primary and possible secondaries and Spirit Animals being temporary guides for magickal workings or general life, I would have to say that my Spirit Animal was a Black Panther (but has since left me) and that my Totem animal might be a Rabbit, Cat, or Oxen.
I say Cat because when I pray or do spells, cats or ravens tend to flock to my house. I say Oxen because I recently searched my name and found my name means Oxen (strength), I am an Ox in the zodiac, and I have been having these odd dreams about an Ox...and I say Rabbit because most of my life, rabbits will follow me and bee too close for comfort so I'm afraid of them. Still, I seem to be drawn to them as much as they are to me, but the only animal I dream about seems to be the Ox...
