Our Friday night roleplaying group is starting a new game tonight and I'm having trouble deciding on some of my character's details. It just occurred to me that the good people in the triple-G might be able to help.

-----

{NOTE: This is the first time I've committed this to print so it's going to be pretty rough as I'm trying to get it down as quickly as possible.}

She is a young girl with telekinesis and the ability to teleport. She is ashamed of her powers however and searched for a way to help people without them knowing about her powers.

Her prayers were answered one day as she was playing in woods not far from her family's campsite. She stumbled upon a small cave which was emitting a faint silver-blue glow. Overwhelmed by curiousity she decided to explore the cave.

Inside the cave she found a small silvery cabinet that was giving off a brilliant bluish light. Even though the light was quite intense it didn't hurt her eyes to look directly at it. As she wondered about this she heard a small voice behind her say, "Welcome, Chosen One."

Turning she was surprised to see a squirrel floating in the air several feet off the ground. Equally surprising was the aura surrounding the squirrel which matched the glow of the cabinet.

After a few moments the squirrel spoke again, "Welcome, Chosen One."

"Umm... Hi?" was all she could come up with.

"For years I have waited for you and the time has finally come to give you your inheritance. Only the Chosen One can open the shrine behind you and claim the artifact within."

Once she recovered from the shock of a talking, floating, glowing squirrel his words finally sunk in. She turned and looked again at the cabinet. Is this the shrine he was talking about?

She cautiously turned the handles on the glowing cabinet and opened the doors. Inside she saw a beautiful silver artifact. After a moment's hesitation she reached out and grasped the artifact.

Immediately an intense burning sensation shot from the artifact and troughout her body. She looked down at her hand was startled to see that she, too, was now giving off a silver-blue radiance.

After a few seconds both the burning and the glow vanished. She turned back to the squirrel with a puzzled look on her face.

Smiling, the squirrel said, "Well done, Chosen One. You are now the rightful bearer of . I leave it up to you to discover what powers it grants you." He began to fade as he said, "Farewell, Chosen One. We may meet again someday."

The girl became frantic. "Wait! Who are you? Who chose me? For what purpose? What is this thing? What does it do? ..."

The squirrel just smiled as he vanished into the ether.

{NOTE: I'm going to skip a bunch of the story now so I can get this posted sooner. What follows is a quick summary of necessary details.}

Eventually she discovers that one of the powers of the artifact is that it will allow her to change her appearance. If she loses possession of the artifact she immediately reverts back to her true form.

She develops an alter ego that she can transform into when she needs to use her powers. That way she can help people while keeping her powers secret.

{Currently, her magical girl state provides her with no new abilites; it just makes her cuter (literally; on my character sheet the only ability her transformation has is two additional ranks of Cute!).}

-----

She and the squirrel need a names.

I'm not sure how old she is (quite a bit of time has passed since she first got her powers; I think she's just old enough to understand what effect her miniskirt has on males but she could be older than that).

I haven't decided what the magic artifact actually is. I'm leaning towards pendant mainly because it'd be unobtrusive to carry and difficult to lose.

I haven't decided what her transformation looks like. So far all we have is that she's a kitsune (foxgirl), and that she wears a miniskirt (we had fun with that when we ran it as a pick-up game since she can use her telekinesis to fly).

In all probability you have already named your squirrel and chosen an artifact. But your questions have me thinking anyway. I suggest for the squirrel's name either Ardilamus or Ardilent. Ardilla is the Spanish word for squirrel. And with Ardilent, I was thinking like a combo of ardilla and ardent (you know, like the glowing/burning of the cabinet.)

And your idea of a pendant works well. Either that or a belt to hold her miniskirt in place. biggrin

I still haven't finalized anything but Joshua Tao in 1d Everything suggested:

Quote:
Squirrel
Kojiki - The title of a historical book on mythology in Japan, highly respected
Tsukuyomi - Incarnation of the moon (since was encountered at night)

Girl
Ying-Tao - Chinese name for a cherry

Well the reason I recomended the name that I did for the girl is because you were unsure if she was old enough to know just how much her miniskirt is affecting the others arround her... you see in the classic symblolism of the chinese language a peach is on par with female sexuality and imortality, and the sysmbolism of a cherry is a young or immature peach...

I like your ideas as well (especially ardent).

Ya'll's ideas are merging with my own and an image is starting to form in my mind. I've got an idea now of what I want their names to mean but I need to do some lexicological study to decide what their names will actually be.

----------

On the rare occassions that I get any kind of mental picture of the artifact it has some kind of jewel that actually contains its magic (which would work for a pendant, belt buckle, earring, wand, and most anything else). I could have the artifact BE a jewel that uses the bearer's thoughts to determine its appearance and would thus be different depending upon who it currently belongs to.

It's appearance could also be affected by it's bearer's current emotional state (kind of like a mood ring on steroids). So if the bearer suddenly becomes frightened or angry the artifact could morph into some kind of weapon. I don't have the build points to add that feature but I could add it later since she's still learning what she and her artifact can do.
