User ImageThis story is set in a city called Alabist. A very modern city. Steam and magic are the main energy sources. The sky is clear and beautiful. From the top of one of it's tall shiny buildings you would think it was the best place to be, but down in the streets its a different story. There is a rift between the people: those born with the innate ability to use magic, and those born with the innate ability to create.
There is no middle ground, those born with magic cannot create potions, or mechanical hearts, Those who create, cannot bring back from the dead, that which has died.
The world is divided into four groups of people: magicians, technicians, chemnicians, and brutes.

Magic is an unseeable force which does not take material shape, but it needs no explanation for what it can do, or what it can power. for example a magician would get around by way of levitation.

Technicians cannot fiddle with the unknown like a magician or a chemnician, they are bound, primarily, to the laws of reality (we use this term lightly), but they know- from the time they are old enough to build, how to create incredible things with the materials they have. For example a techie would get around on a steam powered machine.

Chemnicians use a kind of creation unique to their kind, while they are bound to the herbs, minerals, and chemicals they can find they can create any kind of potion that alters the human body, or substances. They were responsible for creating Coppiamon. A metal of copper color that is the toughest known substance, very often used by techies, and called C2. A chemie would use a flying potion to get around.

Brutes are the leftovers in this world. Born without magic, or a talent for creation, nature has instead decided to gift this group with incredible strength and hardiness. They are nearly impossible to kill, but are often looked down upon by the quarreling groups as well... brutes. Some though have strange talents for music, or art- considered (among fellow brutes) a form of creation all of its own. While Magis, techies, and chemies do not share this view- it's impossible not to be moved by some of the art created by brutes. A brute can run at a superspeed without tiring, to get around.

Welcome to Alabist, the city of copper dreams!

User ImagePost, in paragraph form plox, Who you are, what your name is, your job, your birth right, your talent (M,T,C,B), how old you are, what you look like, and any other old crap we should know about you.

Keep in mind: 1. We tend not to intermarry, but there are no laws against it, and sometimes you just can't stop the love. So generally your parents would not be two different classes, and you would try to avoid romantic relations with another class- as it is seen as taboo.

2. Not all brutes are bulky, their looks are very deceiving. They often have frames like dancers. They are non confrontational, mostly, through conditioning- though they are hard to kill they're minds are just as fragile as the rest of us, and most have been bullied for their "lack" of talent.

3. Chemies tend to dress in black and carry large black suitcases, that contain their traveling labs. They look a lot like assassins, except for the numerous colored potions they carry at their belts. They also often have wings, which aid them in getting around (wings come from potions).

4. Techies tend to dress like aristocratic grease monkies. They wear lots of copper, and carry an assortment of tools, either in a bag or on their belt. The telltale sign of a Techie though, are the goggles which all techies wear- nearly all of the time.

5.Magis are very pure and zen, they go by the mantra, "I create purity from the unknown." they like to dress in white and seem to emanate beauty from within.

6. We are ruled by a parliament, made up equally of the different classes, which is the only thing barring our city from chaos.

7. We are entering a new age, the teenagers of yesterday are finally coming into adulthood. We are the first generation to be fully amalgamated. Friendships between the classes are becoming more common, but are still taboo.

My name is Tujoxi, my friends call me Joxi for short. As you can probably tell I am a CopperHead (techie). I'm 19 years old, I've just opened my second body shop. I build, repair, customize, and race illegal steam racers. I have Bright orange hair that i keep up in pigtails and braids, and brown eyes. My mom and dad were both greasers themselves, they built me my first racer. They died, a while back. Sad as it was, they left me well off, and free to come and go as I please. My shop is called Blackbird body shop. I also specialize in C2 fashion armor.

Name's Arista, nicknames Arie. I'm a brute, so I'm no so popular, but I don't mind to much. I'm an artist, more specifically, a painter. I'm 16 and I live with my older brother. My parents aren't around, for reason my brother still as yet to tell me. My brother and I aren't rich, but we get by just fine. My brother owns a flower shop that we live off of. It's not much, but as I said we get by just fine.

I suppose I'm what you could call the odd ball among the odd men out. I like to dance a lot. Even brutes tend to tease me about that habit. But I suppose since brutes are the lowest of the low, they need someone to pick on. My mother always said that life was cruel, but to get by you had to have compassion for those who don't. I really love her quotes, they seem to brighten up my day. Lastly, as a fair warning. I may be small and slim, but I'm still a brute. Take away magic, take away metal. Well see who laughs last.

This is artimis. He's a brute and manages a flower shop run by a very very old chemnician. His parents sent him to the shop to keep him away from the warzone his homeland turned into. he's lost touch with them because of the war.

while aloof and good natured, he's being train to help fight when he turns of age IF he chooses so.

User Image
here we see him in his combat gear.

when not at the shop or training, he can be found swing dancing at local hot spots. this is a new hobby for him but is an adept and eager learner. Despite all of this he keeps a light attitude. one thing he never stands for is the weak being picked on

User ImageWell I got to admit, Alabist isn't all that friendly to foreigners unless they want you hear. I took the Steam Rail in here just four days ago and just got settled into a studio apartment on the west edge of the city. I'm Next to a busy street so sleep comes a bit in difficult small quantities, but I have an bay view of the port and there is a raw chemical market within walking distance that doesn't seem too shady.

Oh yeah wow, completely slipped my mind. My names Travis Bluewater, if you haven't guessed yet I'm new here. I packed my bags and Headed out of Nowheres-ville and up to the big city at 21. Things are working for me so far, I have a nice job working as a Library clerk, that gives me the time off and the money to use. I'm starting to like it here and I kinda have a game plan as to what to do.
My first instinct is to make sure that my presence is felt. Simple and plain I'm probably jumping the train. But All I can see is my pockets lined with wealth. Hit the pause button. Damn, I don't even know this town and I'm already Practicing my Victory speech. But thats the common trait of a soft spoken, yet eager fellow like myself. Next step is to get a better career, working in a lab or as an understudy. Rub some copper and elbows with higher ups and get myself a grant to open up my own franchise/school.

Im a knut, 20 years old, my name Is Issac Barrel, and I make weapons of all calibers big and small, I hope to oneday make a fighting unit powered by magic but Piloted by me. With that I need the help of my Brother Edwin Barrel. My fraternal twin, but a magi instead of a knut like me. We have the hair of our mother, a mystical dark red, and the hazel eyes of our father, normally blue grey for him, but my brother it is yellow grey and for me a yellowish brown, almost amber color, but they can often change. Me and my brother realize that love like our parents is rare, a magi with a knut, but we hope to break that barrier and show the world the potential we have because of our parents. Most knuts wear the signature goggles but not me, I wear my visor, and if I need any info, I plug them in and analyze.

User ImageDuring the week, during the 3:00 rush hour, city wide announcements are made via speakers in the streets. On weekends there are generally no announcements, unless there is an emergency. Today is a Wednesday..

the daily announcements are as follows-

Citizens of Alabist, please stand by for todays announcements...
It's a a beautiful Spring day! InvisoLabs is putting out a free trial version of their new, non-habit forming, happiness draught. Visit InvisoLabs or your local ChemStop for your free sample. The 28th Annual Cherry Masque is Friday! Everyone from all walks of life are invited: dress up, clean up, and be cordial to your fellow neighbors. Door prizes will be awarded. Hopefully this year there will be no rain, and the the dance will be held, as traditional, in the parliament courtyard, among the blossoming cherry trees. Come alone, or bring a date, whatever you do, don't be late! Enjoy the rest of your day Alabist!

((if you would like something in the daily announcement pm me))

Joxi closed the window to her shop after the daily announcement had finished, and watched as people made their way home. She sat down on the floor of her shop next to the racer she was currently working on and wiped a bead of sweat off of her nose, leaving it streaked with black grease, unbeknown to her.

"i forgot that the masque was coming up." The Spring Masque was one of those social events everyone was expected to go to. Theres were lots of festival and gatherings throughout the year, but there were only about three or so that mattered to your reputation. The Annual Cherry Masque, the Independence Festival, in late summer, and the Harvest Festival in early winter. The Cherry masque, though, tended to be a show of decadence, and was the only gathering the citizens of Alabist tended to spend any money on.

The Masque unofficially celebrated the New Year, only a week ago. There are often fireworks and special food to commemorate, but you have to dress- and play- nice with everyone else. She sighed and mentally counted the credits in her account. She patted the racer next to her. It belonged to the son of one of the parliament members, and a job like this one was going to bring in some cold credits for sure! In fact she was sure this racer alone could pay for her dress, her ticket, her hair, and a steam carriage rental. She slipped out of her daydream and got to work with a new fury on the racer, wanting to finish by tonight.

"Hmm, I wonder if Issac wants to go with me." Joxi pondered for a moment, then went back to work.

Issac turned back to his work mid announcement scoffing at it. "Dress up and play nice!" he said in a mocking tone. He was the child of a forbidden love, most people discriminated against him and his brother as such, calling them such things as abominations or mutts. Pulling a wrench from his side bag Issac looked at the device before him, it was small and his called it the magic compressor, able to harness magic into a energy form virtually any shape he would like. Pressing a button on his visor the screen retracted as he lowered the base to his belt clicking it in place. "Getting so close to phase one." Issac looked about standing and tucking 2 six shooters in his belt line and walking outside where immediately he was met with glares and gestures of ill intent.

hold on! that is the one true limitation of magic, it CAN'T take physical form- the best explanation for it would be a type of energy... magic can basically do anything you want- except become physical. YOU CAN however build a machine, that can transform, so to speak- which is powered by magic, but it would be filled with gears, and have limitations itself. To be fair to the other players, please modify your post.
-management-
It's in the intro- Magic really has only one limitation, don't cross that line. I'll delete this post when your post is modified.

The Library had been particular dry today. Not much to do, except for fixing the microfilm viewer. Some punk kid scribbled on the viewfinder with a crayon, but a bit of solvent took it out quick enough. Travis was polishing a bit of brass at the front desk to avoid being bored when the message came up. A bit of research revealed how much of a big deal it was going to be. "Oh man I really wasn't planning on spending money on a new suit." He sighed a bit. Straining at his bank account was the rest of his debts. He didn't want to ask for a pay advance when he had just started work a few days ago. The other message did cheer him up. His home town Brewed a similar potion called BTL (better than life). The though hit him like a nostalgic grenade, and home sickness punched him as hard as piston knuckles. Travis second guessed coming to the city. If he was in Iris still he could be working in a pharmacy now, he would still have friends, maybe Francesca might still want to be around him. He was quick to shake off the idea, and take a lunch break.

Artimis smiled as the announcement faded from the speaker in front of the shop. 2 days till the masque and business was hectic, even the old man came in to greet the city planners. he hardly ever comes to the shop when its open.
"5 more minutes till i go back into the fray"
he sighed out loud. There were so many people coming in and out of the shop today it was making him dizzy. fellow students were coming in buy corsages and boutonnieres, bouquets for their dates, and not to mention husbands and wifes trying to match each others formal wear. he wouldn't be making commission on his sales, but sir Vidien (the store owner) promised a generous bonus. Being one of only 2 who work in the shop has its perks.

All along the street banners, balloons, and flowers (from the shop) were being hung along the buildings and lamp posts. He stared at this with some longing, with all the work he had little time to find a suit, let alone a date. it was tough enough finding a swing partner that could keep up with him, he wasn't used to the fact that some of the other people weren't born with the speed, or dexterity he was born with. But, surely enough, he was coming along. He no longer left bruises on the girls. balancing time between work, training, swing, and studies was tough, but now he had the next 2 days off for fining a suit, ....and maybe a date.

After four strait hours of work Joxi tightens the last bolt and greases the boosting gear, finally falling to the floor exhausted. The window caught her eye and she realized twilight was settling. She locked up her shop and headed upstairs into her penthouse. She went strait to the shower, washed off all the grease and dirt, made herself presentable, and went back downstairs.

She threw a switch on the garage wall and steam filled the long glass tubes on the ceiling that fed into copper pistons that raised the garage door. Joxi grabbed a small phial of Magicpower from her shelf and plugged it into the racer she has been working on. It kicked to life. She waited a few minuets for the magic to get to the right temperature, then dropped in a condensed water pellet. She cranked the booster gear and was very satisfied with ease with which it turned. Finally she pulled the break lever out of place. The machine began a slow crawl forward, until Joxi narrowed the steam's escape valve, where the machine began to pick up speed. She parked in front of her garage, closed the door, and jumped back on the racer and sailed off to her clients house.
