chapter one the beginning I woke early, really early and looked over at the clock “Five am, damn.” I rolled over and closed my eyes. Sleep wouldn’t come, I had known it wouldn’t but it was worth a try, today was Saturday and for once I didn’t want to wake up. Seeing no alternative I got out of bed, it had been a rough night. Stretching I looked over at the calendar hanging above my computer it was September twenty third and the words SAT re-test were circled in red. I looked at my dimly lit room, it was a wreck, not having time to clean it with school and work “I’ll do it later.” I said with a yawn. Grabbing a hoodie I walked out into the dark hall, the house was chilly but bearable. I made a pit stop in the bathroom then headed down stairs. My mom’s room was still dark but I could make out the outline of two pairs of feet, the kitchen was empty, my little sister was still sleeping. I popped some bread into the toaster and left the kitchen navigating Nike’s toys, the living room was cluttered as usual. The laundry hadn’t been done since mom had been busy at work, I was glad to see that shed taken a break. I threw some clothes into the washer and started the load. I looked at the drier there was a shirt and a pair of jeans folded up there, I smiled “Thanks ma.” I said quietly. Grabbing the outfit I made my way back to the kitchen, my toast was done. Spreading some jam on it, I took the food and clothes upstairs, in the room next to mine my sister stirred. Setting down my food I walked in to check on her, she whimpered and turned over in her sleep shaking. She’d been having the same nightmare for days, I covered her with her blanket and stroked her hair. She stopped shaking and her breathing slowed “Sweet dreams sis.” I whispered and went back to my room closing the door behind me. I walked over to my computer toast in hand and logged on, it took a few minutes to load, and my instant messenger popped up automatically. I signed on and waited for my friends to load, Johnny was on. I wondered what had dragged him out of bed before noon. “What’s up?” I typed my brain was still a little waxed. “Not much, just got home. They where right Julia is a great date” he responded. I shook my head “Dude, you’re impossible, no wonder you can’t hold a girlfriend for more than a day” I typed. There was a pause “Hey dude, I g2g.” he responded then signed off. I leaned back in my chair munching my toast trying to think of what I had to do today Just then out of the blue I got a message from someone I didn’t know “Be at the old YMCA in one hour to discover your destiny”. I looked down in surprise what was left of my toast hanging out of my mouth. “Who are you? Is this a joke?” I typed this was weird. “All will be answered when you arrive.” the person responded. I looked at the clock I had two hours why not I got up and grabbed my outfit “A quick shower won’t hurt though.” I said with a smile. After twenty minutes I was dressed and feeling better, I laced up my boots and headed down stairs. Suddenly, I remembered that I had made plans to go for one last hike after the SAT. I looked for my bag but I couldn’t find it in the clutter. I walked into the kitchen and there by the back door was my pack with a note on it. I grabbed the note and began to read “Dear Bro, I packed your bag for you just remember you promised to bring me back a crystal from that cave you hike to since mom won’t let me go”. I smiled and opened the pack. She’d done a great job nothing was out of place. “Thanks Sis, you’ve earned your treat.” I said swinging the pack over my shoulder. I used the back door; the front creaked when you opened it. It was a gray morning the kind you want go for a walk on; the streets were empty not a car in sight. I looked at my watch; the old YMCA was close so I had plenty of time. In the distance I heard a cat shriek and a dog bark. Out of the next driveway the local stray came running out after a small cat. “Brutus come here” I yelled and the dog obeyed. “How many times do I have to tell you? No chasing cats.” I scolded shaking my finger at him. “You chase the package guy.” I said smiling and rubbing him on the head.
