To quote TV Tropes: TV Tropes Usually refers to technically clean-but-obviously-fetish-based scenes. In certain cases, it's very clear that the work is an excuse for the creator to express some particular kink. In other cases, it's far less certain; most examples below require at least a little guessing of an author's true intent. (If they have, say, a non-story art section on their site, looking at which subjects they focus on there can be helpful.) Often, this can overlap with a certain philosophy the author espouses; for instance, an "enlightened culture" in The Future may have no nudity taboo, or may have everyone bisexual, or remove all body hair at birth, et cetera. (Sometimes, this is combined with a Take That on sexual conservatism or prudery.) Sometimes, the appeal is 100% not sexual. In this case it might not necessarily be a bad thing, as writing about stuff that you happen to like is a completely normal part of the creative process; the problem, however, comes when this kind of stuff starts interfering with the storyline's development. Admit it. We all do it. It's actually rather hard to avoid. For example, almost all of my creations: - have a 'chew toy' character - will include gratuitous violence against one character, especially with awkward falling poses, but will never include much gore if any at all - the numbers 48, 911, and 11 - colour combinations of blue/white, blue/black, red/black - bandages make good ninja clothes - dead people have blue or blue-tinged skin - loners are sexy. Freaks are cool. - I'm not saying aliens exist, but ALIENS EXIST, at least until someone proves me wrong with total, unfalsifiable evidence. Not one of my stories actually denies this. - villians fall under three categories: classic bad (and sexy), psychopathic, or just plain weird. The last will never, ever succeed. - Biology is Fun. And aliens do it, if not better, than waaaay differently - There is no 'good' and 'evil' - black leather boots - Dancing is probably a metaphore for sex - Cheshire Cat smiles - a whole lot of forbidden love - Technology Is Evil What about you?

- Lions, mostly in signs, names, and statues - May and June are the best months to do anything - Mages are Not To Be Taken Seriously. Even if they are as powerful as they claim, they're generally not as mysterious. - Dreams will be mentioned, whether they mean anything or not - If a random number is needed, it will be seven or a multiple thereof - It Might Be Spelled Backwards - All crushes, no love. Misfortune on the first to marry. - Cats are Essential - When I say tall, I mean tall - Some names come from sheet music - Watch the backgrounds, you might see someone you recognize
I can't think of any more.

Fetishes that show up in writing? Let's see...
- There Will Be Communists, in some form or another - Feragel. 'Nuff said. - It all goes to hell in the autumn, thus starting the plot! - Love isn't all you need. It's kind of a let-down for the super-romantic. - If the Devil shows up, he's Luciferian, not Satanic - If you are conservative, you are (unwittingly) as close to evil as anything ever gets. Probably. - Not much brown hair. - If you are blond, you're not a nice person, or you're an idiot/naive - Knives beat swords and guns. Even katanas. - The End of the World.

-The storyline will either take place or conclude in autumn. God help the characters if the timeline ever rolls around to winter -- the bloodshed will be plentiful and frequent.
-If it's winter and there's anything made of glass nearby, someone's gonna get impaled.
-God is actually just a really confused guy who doesn't know what the ******** he's doing.
-Likewise, Death is a drunk fool who never took a book-keeping course in his life.
-You will never know whether a character is good or bad until it's too late. And even then, sometimes it's not clear -- it's often up to the reader's interpretation.
-If a character values something, they will probably lose it.
As far as kinks go--
-Yukio is the punching bag. He will suffer, he will bleed, he will break bones, and he will LOVE every minute of it.

Oh. Heh. Here's one:
- Friendships that are slash. Most notably Alex/Connor and Forelock/Expy. This generally turns up when the characters are too young for actual relationships, or were, or... something like that. It does not include Indio/Feragel. That's... something else entirely.

Ah, and here's another one! (Thank you, Meyers-Briggs!)
-With a very, very few exceptions (which you can spot pretty much right away) all major and most minor characters get the letter I for introvert. Realistic? Not so much. Obviously not on purpose.

-Girls are always passive. I'm working on it, but still. -Every girl has to have a boyfriend by the end of the story. Can you tell I'm single? -And: The Hero always gets the girl. REALLY working on that one.
-Now that I think about it, they're all dressed Lolita, which is something I've wanted to do since high school. -Dark hair--want it. My hair is a very light, almost white-blonde, and sometimes the thing I want most in the world is to try black hair. (That would just look weird, but I'm willing to compromise on red. Everyone else keeps telling me they don't want me to dye it, though...) -Purple prose. Hate me forever, but I like description, and lots of it.
Ahm... That's all I've got for now.

-Anybody over the age of ten either drinks or does drugs (This is mostly just a fact in the town where the story takes place -There will be a cornfield -nothing good will happen in a cornfield -Friendship that can easily be mistaken for slash -Awkward wording that comes into play later on in the story -there is some hidden significance behind everything (For example, my Mc compares the way his friend laughs when she's drunk to shattering glass. Later on in the story, something really horrific happens involving breaking glass, and he winds up avoiding that friend because whenever she laughs, it reminds him of what happens.) -There is always a woods -the woods are only half as evil as the cornfield -The weather at the start of the story is hotter than hell, but by the end of the story the place will be as cold as a witch's tit. -All the really demented stuff happens to the guy that I find the hottest -The hot guy will die -Guns are never used. They're threatened, but never used. All the real damage is done with common household items/fists. -there will be rape -Girls will always get off easier than guys

There will be a sword somewhere in the story, the girl's sword cannot be bigger than the guy's (thanks Freud...), the girl will have more magic than the guy, yet the guy will always do more damage (even if the girl should be able to wipe the floor with an entire continent in one hit).
...well, okay, that's a little overdramatic, but you get my point.

- There is no such thing as an effective mage. They're all either too vain and uppity to give a righteous damn, or they're too absorbed in their studies to get anything done. Any effective mages that do occur will invariably be insane and unable to function as a contributing member of society.

-All rich people are corrupt (which is freakin' weird, since I come from an upper class family) -The female lead will have a sexual relationship with the antagonist -The male love interest will be at least 6'4" tall -The male antagonist will be under 6'2" tall -All major female characters range from kind of a slut to total slut -Significant age differences between at least one couple is a must -Truly platonic relationships between two male characters that still seem suspect -Someone will die -All significant numbers in the story is a multiple or denominator to the number 12 -There will be a musician -There will be multiple chain smokers -There will be someone who drinks tons of coffee, and someone who drinks tones of red wine. These will never be the same person.
