June of 2008 marks the 100th aniversary of the publication of Anne of Green Gables.
What has made Anne of Green Gables the classic we know and love today? What is it about the book that keeps readers of all ages and generations captivated with the little orphan girl Anne?

I'd say Anne, of course. Her character blooms adventures in the minds of young girls. I know she has for me. And Anne is imperfect but perfect! xd

I love all of the books. "Anne of Ingleside" is my very favourite, I love the fact that all of the children have parts of Anne's personality, but some of Gilbert's as well. "Rilla of Ingleside" impressed me.
I think that the reason Anne captivates all readers is because when she was written, she was actually a kid with a voice that was equal to the adults around her. No more, "children should be seen and not heard". Which is part of the reason for her temper.

i agree completely as well, but i have to add that the other thing about anne was that she wasn't just a child she was also a girl speaking out in a time when the empire was ruled by the mineset of the Angel in the House and Anne was not that. she wanted to be out and amoung people. she was outspoken and open and not the moral center of her own life. Marilla tried to turn her into that image of the woman that she needed to build a proper house for a man and then in the continuing books she turns them down. Anne is the independent Woman and marries for love in the end and is open to the ideas of the changing British culture that stretched into the empire... (i hope i wrote something like that on my children's lit exam as well as my Victorian Culture and Society... cause that sounds pretty impressive if i do says so myself. wink ) Oh Victorianism, how i am facinated by it! woot!!
