Just as the title says, I don't know what I want to do now.
When I was going to university, it was because I wanted to work with animals (avoid human contact basically lol). But then I found out that Zoology is all about thesis's, conventions, basically selling yourself to your colleagues. NOT what I was interested in AT ALL.
So then I started working at the meat packing plant that I'm at. I was/am very content working here. Decent wage for boring a** work ($14.50/hr), a little hard on the body, but all in all I could see myself doing it long enough to pay off a mortgage.
Then I found out we're closing. I could transfer to the other plant.. but that one's contract is up in 2010 and they're probably going to close then too. Not really worth it imo.
So now I'm looking for a job. Correction. A CAREER! I want to work somewhere for a really good wage ($18/hr or higher), with good hours, and that I'll enjoy. With a little bit of schooling, I know this is well within my grasp. It's not like my Zoology dream that is way beyond anything realistically possible for me. I know I can do this. But here lies the problem.
I don't know what I want to do. I've looked it up, and some of the things that pop out at me are:
Licensed Practical Nurse (just don't like that it's a 15 month program) Paramedic (not really good wage) Bartender (not good pay, but good tips wink ) Truck Driver (hopefully just city stuff, I wouldn't want to do long haul... lol) Bus driver (but some people are scary...)
I'm obviously leaning towards the LPN side of things.... if I can even get in at such short notice, the program starts in July (or I'd have to wait until March) ...
What do you guys think? What are some other options you can think of?

If you want to earn mega mega bucks you're going to end up doing a thesis probably. I would say go with licensed practical nurse. You seem interested in that area, and education is an investment, so 15months isnt too bad. Plus there is demand for health workers at the mo i think so you're almost guaranteed a job at the end

I think you should be a bartender. You are a really pretty chick and its always the pretty chicks who gets big tips.
Wear tight shirts and you'll make at least $250 in tips. My mom always made good tips when she worked as a bartender.

Maybe I should do both. ninja
Of course, I'd probably quit bartending when I see some of my customers at the hospital due to alchohol poisoning. :XP:
But yeah, I think I'll probably go with the LPN. There is a high demand for them right now, and from my understanding the reason there are so few positions in the classifieds is because you're basically hired right out of college (they come after you, not you applying all over the place) This would be awesome and I've even heard that most people are offered jobs out of province - and even in the US.
As for qualifications on the 'can I do this' side. Unanimously yes. I have no problems with blood, needles, dealing with people in altered emotional/physical states, etc. Essentially, I can't believe I didn't realize that this was a perfect career choice earlier.
Eventually I want to be one of those nurses that preps the patient for surgery... then hands the tools during the surgery... that'd be awesome. I don't want to do the cutting and such, but helping out that way is good enough for me. My hands are too shaky for me to want to do that kind of thing lol ... and I found out I suck at it when I was in university and had to dissect animals... everyone else's was so much more aesthetically pleasing. gonk

theres such a thing as an aesthetically pleasing disected animal? xd
well it sounds like a pretty good choice to me. You could always bar tend to pay for stuff while you studied if you wanted to

No way man, I'm getting laid off from the plant, therefore I qualify for EI! Maybe I could do bartending under the table...
And yes, I can honestly say that there is a HUGE difference between dissected animals when looking at them. The problem lies in the fact that I use tweezers when I should use a scalpel (rip/tear as opposed to cut) and so my animal comes out all ragged and fall-apart-y and people go "What the heck did that used to be?" while everyone else's you look at and go "I know exactly what I'm looking at"

Somehow EI stands for Unemployment Insurance. rolleyes
Basically, welfare. whee
And I used tweezers because we were supposed to 'gently lift *muscle*' so I thought tweezers would work if I just shove them underneath and pulled up... supposedly they forgot to write "cut end of muscle off of bone THEN gently lift *muscle*"
Stupid frog throat muscle thing mad
I ended up finishing the job with my fingers. ninja

Yeah, I was considering being a doctor for a little bit, but didn't like the idea of being in university sooo damn long. So then I was all "Fine, I'll be a vet" - which is actually WORSE! So I went into zoology and counted my blessings I changed my mind on the first two when I did my first dissection lol
And yes, with my fingers. Pinch 'n' pull. lol

lol please dont tell that to your patients when you're a licensed nurse xd
How long does it take to become a vet? When i started uni i was like "sweet 3 years". Then i was like, well whats another 3 years. Now im thinking "maybe i could do my PhD..." xd lol uni is sneaky like that sometimes ninja it sucks you in and then tries to keep you there

lol, no worries about me telling patients that. Besides, as an LPN I don't do any of the 'fun' stuff.
I forget how long it takes, probably just as long as a doctor. Maybe shorter, but it's WAY harder to get into vet school than med. @.@

yeah i heard that about vet school too. Something about how you have to learn about lots of different physiological systems, rather than just the human one. Sounds like too much hard work to me xd but good on the people who do it

Well yeah, you have to know all these different animals and everything - usually vets branch into certain fields of animals to cut down on having to know ALL of them. Like there's the ones that specialize in farm animals, wild animals, and household pets lol
But the fact that there's only one vet school (I believe) in Canada means that demand for spots is really high, so you need a gpa of like 4.5 to even have a chance.

true, i suppose even if you specialise then you're going to have lots of systems, even household animals can include birds, chinchillas, rats, cats, various amphibians >.<
