Help me, please =)

So basically here's what I got,

So-and-so bent in and their gazes held like (BLANK), each man glaring at the other, cruelly.

At first I had 'held like magnets' but that made me make an ugly face so it didn't really fit for me.
I'd be up for a metaphor, too, I suppose but something like a simile to put in that blank spot would be really helpful. The sentence needs a ~zing~ (<- If that's such a thing).

You're thoughts or ideas??

''So-and-so bent in and their gazes held like glue, each man glaring at the other, cruelly."

[(i was about to say honey but that sounded odd. o.o)]

Hope I helped!!
