Ever notice whenever you get someone who types "spelt", they're always met with Grammar Nazis telling them that it's spelled "spelled", when in reality they're both correct?
Or when you have someone typing with British spelling of words, such as "colour", "armour", or "honour". That's the British spelling, but the language stemmed from England! You can see it within the root word: English goes to England, not American to England. Yet, you'll always see people correcting spelling just so it's the American way.
If the writer is using incorrect spelling or grammar, but you still can comprehend the point they're expressing, why should spelling and grammar matter so much to GDers?
I'm sure some GDers put people down for their spelling because they get a rush from feeling superior in any way towards those people. But seriously, it's not a competition to see who can spell things exactly the same.
If you haven't noticed by talking to me on AIM or Yahoo or MSN, you'll see I'm completely lax when it comes to grammar, punctuation, etc.
But on the forums, I switch into proper usage. Why? I've found people listen to me more and respect my ideas when they're not constantly trying to make me go back and change my words to fit their spelling needs. That's just what I do. Why do they try and make everyone do what they do?
Thoughts, input?

What amazes me is the people who complain about grammar and spelling, are the same people who create these one sentence, "discuss." threads.

They complain so much about grammar, they keep their topics/posts to a few lines... I think a quality topic is much better than one that has immaculate grammar. As long as it's legible, what is the big beef?

I'd like to say it's them feeling somehow superior by pointing out flaws in other people, even if they're not really flaws. Before I started using Gaia I had AOL and used their message boards. The regs seemed to love correcting the grammar and spelling of n00bs. Half the time those people called n00bs for abbreviating words shouldn't have even been considered such because what they were actually saying in their posts had value, but because they chose "wut" over "what" it didn't matter.

It's because of that I started to use proper English on the Internet. I didn't want what I have to say to be discounted simply because of grammar Nazis. However I don't understand the need to correct British English, considering there are probably just as many people in the UK using Gaia as there are Americans.

Bottom line, it shouldn't matter how a word is spelled or how properly structured a sentence is as long as you can understand what's being said.

I think it's a sort of intellectual eliteism. If you have a few spelling errors that must mean you're iliterate, and id you're iliterate then your opinion must mean nothing. For others I guess spelling might be just a per peevt of theirs. However their some ehat faschist nature in regards to spelling suprises me, considering that gaia is an international web site you have to expect some different views as what things are in regards spelling and such.

It takes a lot of time and effort to type perfectly. I'm a fast typer, I make mistakes and I can usually find myself auto-correcting as I go...

But for someone who doesn't spend a lot of time on here, it's more of just getting a point out without having to worry about being scrutinized.

I'm sure the people who claim to be grammar Nazis have to carefully watch their browsers spellchecker, in the case that they just may be proved hypocritical...

Everyone makes mistakes, it doesn't take a lot of class to overlook minor mistakes. At least people who type legibly are giving it a full effort. Not like the ones who type lyke ths.

It's downright childish to pick on someone because they missed a comma or a semi-colon. Like really.

Usually when you read an article, for a long period of time, it can get stuck in your head.
If you keep reading something that's always incorrect, you'll always presume that spelling "definitely" is spelled "definately" or something.

Because of the GD, AND getting hit on the head with a metal pole, I always have to check the dictionary if I'm spelling correctly--but back then I didn't. D:

Interesting point.
I've never really though about it like that.
In a way I guess it's sort of brainwashing you.
