cat•a•lyst [ kátt'list ] (plural cat•a•lysts)

Noun

Definition:
1. chemical that accelerates chemical reaction: a substance that increases the rate of a chemical reaction without itself undergoing any change
2. stimulus to change: somebody or something that makes a change happen or brings about an event

This may seem out of place probably something more towards the line of something that belongs in the writing and literature section, but, I believe it still holds relevance to the GD. That being said I'm going to begin...

Books, particularly great American novels are what I think the hope of the GD lies in. Not so much in the books themselves but in the underlying issues, symbolisms and metaphors. All of which are asking questions about human nature in ways which most can relate to either unique life experiences or there day to day lives. A book I've finished recently is "the Great Gatsby" by F. Scott Fitzgerald.{ Which is an amazing book even on a surface read if you haven't read it yet I highly recommend it.}Which deals with some very relevant and interesting issues that will have an undeniable effect on all of us in some way, some of the issues being: The American dream, action vs. Gesture, the value of dreams and living an authentic life?

So, I was wondering what your thoughts on these discussion topics are.

Discuss:
-Books or authors who've changed your life?
-What are the underlying issues that you think that we as human beings should be seeking answers to?
-Where do you think the best sources of discussion topics for the GD are?
-What are you opinions on the issues I mentioned from the great Gatsby?
~~ The American dream, action vs. Gesture, the value of dreams and living an authentic life
-What books do you feel could change the GD for the better?

i think as you grow older those authors that affect you change
growing up louis lowry and louis sachar really affected me, with books like "The Giver" and "Holes"
but i also remember being greatly affected by this one collection of poetry called "The Oxford Book of Childrens Verse in America"
i went to a private school that didnt put much emphasis on language like that, so it blew me away to see words and ideas expressed in a poetic manner like that

recently ive been affected by autobiographies of musicians, i read scar tissue last year as a senior in high school and it flat out blew me away. now im about to be in college im really taken by books that are a little off beat, like "Only Revoloutions" you guys should check it out

i think the only real question we should all be concerned with is what can i do to better the world
what can i do, to leave my mark? not as just another carbon footprint, but will my good deeds outweigh my bad?

and lastly
the great gatsby is an amazing book :]

"the Outsiders" was really good. I just finished it recently. It taught me a lot about stereotypes, innocence, and friendship. It's really short and I think everyone should read it.
