Symphony blew a piece of her mane out of her eyes as the tips of her hooves skimmed a cloud. Today was so quiet, she liked it. No one to ask her to stop singing. She was on her own a lot, but now up here in the sky there was nothing, not a sound except for herself and Veln, her famaliar. She did a quick loop, ignoring Velns protests, then landed gracefully at the edge of a rocky cliff. The sun was just setting over the horizon, twilight. Her favorite time of day, where night and day collided. On the rocky spire, Symphony began to hum, and Veln joined in, matching her tune an exact octave below. Symphony then began to sing, a high clear voice that seemed to pierce every part of this silent world. She felt more than heard Veln join in, caught up in the music.

Ah, sunset. The epitome of glorious colors, a sight fit for any painter's canvas. Cobalt always came here to watch the sunset, to watch the sky change from blues into soft purples, reds, and oranges. It was something he anticipated, waited for every day. Because in those moments he could forget about everything else. He could forget that he was a mongrel, a half-breed mutt. He could forget that he looked monstrous. His few moments of bliss.
Tearing his eyes away from the sunset for a moment, he saw, out of the very corner of his eye, a brown-winged Soquili perform a loop in the sky. Amused, he watched her, secretly hoping to see another display of technical skill, however she merely landed gracefully on top of a nearby cliff. She obviously hadn't seen him, a few yards away, or she would have surely chosen a different place to land. Not that she could see him easily. Cobalt was hidden in the shadows, unseen unless one knew specifically what to look for.

Symphony continued her song, the crecendo's becoming louder, Veln's bass toned voice guiding her on. Her eyes were shining as she finished with a long clear note, high, high as could be, but not painful to the ears, more like the high pitched ringing tone of a chime. It held, a few seconds, then ten, and then Symphony cut it off, leaving an unfinished note hanging in the air, suspended in time, waiting to be finished off. She could almost see it there, pleading with her to give it an end.
She frowned with a grin, and said, "Oh fine," and finished it off with a flourish. She was breathing hard, but was to intent on watching the suns last rays disipate over the horizon, leaving a red glowing sky behind. She said absentmindedly to Veln, "You know, life is like a song. It has its strong points when its in the spotlight, but most of the time is background, while someone else gets their spotlight for a few brief seconds. But without all the people in the background, the person in the spotlight wouldn't be special at all." Her voice became a little more hushed, and she added, "But some of us are in the spotlight all the time, but not necesarily the one that others like...so I guess that one is more like a downlight." She trailed off.
Veln clacked his claws against the granet beneath them, and pricked his ears. There was a new scent on the breeze, and he said casually, "I do not think we are alone." He hummed, if this stranger wanted to stay hidden, then they were no threat, and if they revealed themselves, they were no threat. Either way, Veln couldn't care less. He only wanted 2 things in life, Symphony, and music.

What a beautiful melody! Cobalt listened to her sweet voice, with all it's inflections and notes, and was truly saddened when she ceased singing. He would have stayed there in the shadows, anxiously wishing that she would choose to sing yet again, but that....small creature that accompanied her had caught his scent. True, he could have stayed hidden, but now that he had been detected, there was no real point in doing so.
Stepping out of the shadows, he offered the mare a quick smile, and a polite nod to her companion. "I'm Cobalt. Forgive me for spying, but I didn't want to startle you, and stop your singing. It's quite beautiful, you know..." Cobalt's voice trailed off, realizing that surely something as beautiful as that song should not have fallen on his ears...after all, he was not beautiful enough to deserve to hear such a sweet, sweet melody.

Symphony smiled back, not the least perturbed that Cobalt was a half Kalona. She replied, "I'm Symphony." Now that she heard his name, she could have sworn she had heard it before, but she couldn't quite remember where. She said, "Nothing could ever stop me from singing. My whole life is a song, the bad days are a slow, soft mournful one, and the wonderful days are filled with crecendo's and high notes. Just because I'm not singing, doesn't truly mean I have stopped." Her eyes were shinning as she said this.
"Everyone has a song, be it more saddness than happyness, but in every song, even the saddest funeral march, there is a high point, a point filled with joy and love, even if its just for a second, every song has that, but the rest is sorrow. Sorrow for lonelyness, sorrow for being hurt, or sorrow for others being against you." She sighed, that was her song, and her high point had not yet come.
She asked Cobalt in a soft voice, "What is your song?"

Cobalt smiled sadly. "If everyone has a song...then mine must be the song of silence. For there is not much to sing about in my life." He chuckled softly. "But don't feel sorry for me. It is my lot in life, and I can handle it."
"What about you? You say your life is a song...surely your song is full of happiness, for one such as yourself." Why she was so concerned with music, Cobalt didn't know. Perhaps it was because she was a singer...or perhaps there was another reason. Whatever the reason, Cobalt had never met a Soquili so connected to song.

Symphony felt a jolt of pain hit her heart as Cobalt said he had a song of silence. She couldn't imagine someone without a song, it would be the same as being without a soul, wandering lost and forever saddened. She shook her head, and said, "I know you have a song Cobalt, even if it has not begun yet."
She smiled sadly as she answered his question about her own song, "No, mine is a song of saddness." She sighed, and continued, "When others see me, all they see is my tail, and my large wings. They say I'm a freak, a mutant" She spat out the last word with a harsh pain to her voice, "They only see how I am different from them, and never look for what is the same. The only things I have in this world are Veln, and song. Singing lets me be free, it concerns no others, only myself. No one can tell me what is wrong with it." She whispered, "It's mine."
Veln jerked his head in agreement, and was slightly pained as he watched his mistress grow sad. He growled softly, what hurt her, hurt him too. The bond between them was so strong.

Cobalt frowned slightly. "It would probably be just as sad as yours. If that is the case, then perhaps I would be better off without one." He sighed softly, wondering how much of his history he could trust with this mare. "You see, I'm not exactly normal myself. And different is never easy...at least you don't have small foals terrified of you because they're convinced that you're going to eat them." He chuckled darkly, remembering several occasions where he had frightened off small foals. He would never hurt them, but...he looked like a cold-blooded killer, so he didn't really blame them for being afraid.
"It is good that you have a way to be free. It is a luxury that most don't have." Including himself. Cobalt felt trapped in his own body by his Kalona half. It was because of it that he was ridiculed, feared, and hated. If he could only rid himself of it...he could be normal. But normal was not meant for him. And he struggled daily to accept that he would never be free of the sideways glances of others...would forever see that wariness, the distrust in their eyes.
He looked on Symphony with empathy. She knew what it was like to be an outcast, but...he wondered if she knew what it was to be considered a killer as well. Still, she had a good deal to be unhappy about. Cobalt wished that others would not be so judgmental...that they would look more on the heart than the outward appearance. But that would never happen.
