The US absolutely must not get involved. The longer this can be kept as a regional territory dispute, the better. Putin is looking for any excuse to start another Cold War; let's not hand him one on a silver platter.
Then again, it would certainly create an interesting, and possibly positive, diplomatic situation if the US came out in favour of Russia, but the US politicians would never agree to that. This conflict has an air of "big Russia beating up little ex-USSR states", which isn't the whole story, but that's what the public sees, so supporting Russia would be political suicide.
I think it's absolutely critical that we find out what Obama and McCain's stances are on the situation; this is exactly the kind of diplomatic mess that can make or break an administration.

I still don't get why no one cares that Georgia is also bombing the hell out of South Ossetia.

Indeed; I guess it's because the media only jumped on the story when Russia got involved, so they look like the aggressor here. It's not just big-scary-evil-Russia beating up on poor-innocent-defenceless Georgia, that's for sure.

What reason would the US have to get involved? Another war is not exactly what you guys need right now.

Exactly. This whole situation is just pissing me off. Every now and then I see in a tiny corner of the newspaper explaining how it got started....yet the rest of the story acts like it was Russia's fault for defending their citizens.
