I decided I'd like to start taking a daily multi-vitamin, so I picked up a bottle of One-a-Day Women's multi vitamins. Does anyone know if these are okay during breastfeeding? It doesn't say on the bottle, so I don't know... maybe I'm just being totally clueless. But I figured I'd ask anyway, just to be on the safe side.

I can't see why they wouldn't be OK. I've been taking pre-natals non-stop since I was pregnant with Ethan in 2005, took them the entire time I was breastfeeding and my heathcare provider always made sure to stress that was what I should be doing at that time.

My doctor said to stop the pre-natals as soon as Aden was born, but I've also read that they're good while breastfeeding.

It says on the bottle for the multi vitamins that the bottle contains enough iron to harm a child... but I guess that's more if the kid gets into it and eats a bunch of them? I'm being a little ditzy, I guess.

eek That's odd that your doctor would tell you to stop taking prenatals...they're even recommended for non-breastfeeding women the first few months post-partum to help rebuild your stores after having a baby. At every appointment we had for our son, as soon as his pediatrician would hear he was being breastfed, I'd be asked if I was still taking my prenatals and told to continue doing so.

Yes, adult level vitamins could harm a child if directly ingested by them. But they could also harm you if you took more then one.

But it'd be okay while I'm breastfeeding?

I read somewhere that babies only get a small percentage of whatever you take in through the breastmilk. Is that right?

Here, I dug up a couple of links for you....

Baby Center
Med TV
Kelly Mom This was the only link that I found that said vitamins aren't really necessary if you're eating a well-balanced diet.

So the answer appears to be that vitamins will not hurt, especially if you're not 100% perfect nutritionally. The only information about them being harmful was if you take supplements on top of the vitamins.

My kids' pediatrician always asks me if I'm still taking my prenatal vitamin since I'm breastfeeding the baby. She wants to make sure I am. My bottle of prenatal vitamins even says "for pregnant or lactating women" on the side of it.

Mine did too. But oh well.

Yeah, my diet's nowhere near perfect. And my bones seemed to be aching lately (if that makes any sense at all), so I thought some calcium along with other vitamins would do me some good. Hence my idea to take multi-vitamins. Also, I figure it's good for me to get into some good habits so I can pass them on to Aden later in life.

I'd keep taking the prenatals then. Should be more than enough and everything on Google says it's safe. If you keep feeling worn down, see your doctor to make sure it's not something else.

These multi-vitamins are cheaper, so I'll stick with them, I think. They're probably not a whole lot different anyway..

I feel obligated as a nutrition buff to wag my finger and say, it's always always always always better to get the vitamins and minerals from natural food sources. They digest and absorb more properly that way, plus the foods richest in vitamins are dark, leafy greens, which are good for you for plenty of other reasons.

Eating a healthy diet will give you more energy and just make you feel... well, better.

That said, multivitamins are a REALLY good way to supplement if you know you're not getting what you need, especially while breast feeding. If you don't have ample amounts of vitamins ready to be turned into breast milk, your body sort of... naturally leeches it from what you need, which is not a good thing if you're already worn out from just having a kid, caring for them AND feeding them.

I'm pretty sure you'd have to take more than enough of the pills to make yourself very sick before it could hurt your baby. Always consult a doctor if you're unsure, but I'm pretty confident in saying that.

Trust me, I'd love to have a diet that supplies me with everything I (actually, we) need... but that's just not the case. Aden and I are going back and forth between two houses right now, so my diet is kind of all over the place because of that. We've tried the healthy food thing before, but vegetables and fruits all end up going bad before I can eat them all. Once we get into our own place, I'll try eating healthier again, so I can show Aden that healthy food is good. But for now, a vitamin is totally the way to go.
