Does anyone know where I can find a good halloween costume for a baby in Canada (or even better... in Calgary)? We want to find a frog costume, but the chances of that happening are probably pretty slim.

Depends on how much you're willing to spend.
Me, I'm a cheapskate. I can't bring myself to spend a whole heck of a lot. There's always ebay or craigslist, however, the prices go up the closer it gets. I've noticed a lot of the quality isn't superb, so winging your own is always fun. I usually buy after Halloween for the next year and sell the costumes when the time comes, comes out pretty even.

If my sewing skills were up to snuff, I'd probably make a costume, but it's been awhile since I've made anything, let alone finished a project. Even though it may cost a lot, I think I'll buy this year. I plan on making costumes later on, but for now it'll be much easier to buy. And it won't end up unfinished.

Well, you don't really even need to sew a full costume. You could pick up cheap plain color clothing and doctor it up with fabric paint or felt and make a costume for fairly inexpensive as well. Especially with a baby, nothing would need to be too elaborate. For example, you could easily make a bear costume or another animal by purchasing the color clothes you need and adding details on--maybe by doing the felt option or purchase an extra piece to cut other parts out of to make details like ears, tails, etc. Wings are ridiculously easy to make. Have old wire hangers and cheap pantyhose? The kind you can buy in all sorts of colors for about $1 at the drugstore that would never survive normal wear? Unwrap the hanger, form it to the shape you want, pop into pantyhose and seal off. Add little fabric paint details and VOILA, you have wings.
I've been thinking about doing something with my kids this year--if our neighborhood does ToT, who knows, Texas is odd that way--and I'm just going to go for more versatile Halloween themed clothes or minimal costuming.

If only I had the time to make things these days. I probably could finish something, if I had the time to even sit down and start a project.
Looking online at costumes for the three of us, I found a Freddy Krueger one, and a Mrs. Freddy Krueger one. Richard loves Freddy! He said if we could find a baby that would be an awesome idea... I can knit, so I figure maybe I'll knit Aden a sweater? I dunno... there's only 57 days left! I have to think of something! biggrin

Baby items are fast and easy...5 minutes here, 10 minutes there and you're done in no time. smile It's really about making a little time and commiting to it every day. I do 10-20 minute knitting breaks all day while watching my son and go through projects really fast.
If you started now, I can see no reason why you couldn't get something done for him with 15 minutes or so a day.

Besides the fact that my sewing machine is broken...
I'll ask Richard what he wants to do. I figure maybe we'll take a look at some stores in Calgary, and maybe Value Village and see if we can find anything we like. If not, maybe we'll do his Freddy Krueger thing (am I spelling that right...?). We'll pick up some yarn, download a knitting pattern, and I'm sure I can get a sweater done by then...
