The training session is pretty decent, but not everyone reads everything and it definitely doesn't cover all topics. So let me throw out some tips for playing. Here goes:
1) You can view your character info by selecting yourself and then pulling down the OPTIONS menu on the target info window (which shows your name). There is an option there that says "Player Info". Choose that. (NOTE: Improvements are coming soon that will make it much easier to see your character info.)
2) You can see the buffs/debuffs on you (and on your Crew) by opening the Crew List. (Click the Crew icon on the lower, left of your Action Bar.)
3) Watch your orb count. When you get four or five of them, go to the Null Chamber and power your rings up. EVERY QUEST GRANTS AT LEAST ONE ORB...so try out the quests to gain orbs easily. (The quests are also where the storyline resides, so it shouldn't be too laborious for ya.
4) Try to "pull" monsters away from a group. That won't always work. Some groups are all allied together and they are "one for all, and all for one" in their defensive strategy. Don't be afraid to run when grossly outnumbered. Try hitting and running a bit to get out of a mass scrum, then hitting, running, etc.
5) Monsters come in different varieties. A standard "grunt" is easy to kill. His lieutenant is easily soloable, but way tougher than a grunt. But demi-bosses (like the Gnome Commander, Katsumi's Kokeshi Doll, She Wolf, Mother Fluff, etc.)...well...those are group targets. Beware of them. They have MUCHO health and they're offensively powerful. (And we won't even *discuss* real bosses here. You're still some distance from those kinds of critters.)
6) A Crew can overcome some difference between your toughness and a monster's toughness...but it will only overcome so much. If you take a group of CL1.0 players into Bass'ken Lake, then you're going to get worked. There's no doubt about it. Raise your ring levels and try finding a place to fight that's more your speed.
7) USE YOUR BUFFS! Especially when in Crews. If you don't use your buffs, it's about the same thing as volunteering to enter a swordfight without armor or a shield. You won't last long. Turtle, Teflon Spray, Knife Sharpen, Keen Aye!, etc., etc., etc.
If you're in a Crew, then having someone dedicated to healing is not a bad idea. It can be a really fun way to play (saving your teammates' lives is fun), and it's also important so that offensively-oriented players can utilize their skills without worrying about staying alive.
9) Learn to love the "~" key. It allows you to easily cycle through targets on the screen without having to click on them.
10) On a related note...are you having trouble clicking on your Crewmates when trying to heal them? Fear not! Click on their name in the Crew list and, voila!, they are targeted and you can heal them easily.
These are just SOME tips. There's lots of ways to play. Enjoy yourselves!
