I've got a question about pregnancy tests... maybe it's a silly question. I'm just wondering if breastfeeding can affect the outcome. Like... if the different hormones you have while breastfeeding can affect the result of the test. Does anyone know?

Short answer, no, it does not affect the result. The tests measure hCG which only comes from a developing placenta. Quote: Dear Springmom, Great question! Breastfeeding can cause a woman to have irregular periods or to not get her period. Naturally, you might wonder if you are pregnant under these circumstances. Which gets us to your question...how accurate are home pregnancy tests when you are breastfeeding? The answer is that they are just as accurate as when not breastfeeding, which means that they will register positive by about two weeks after conception. Therefore, if you got pregnant yesterday, it will not yet be positive. And, if the test is negative, you should check again in a few weeks just to be sure. Meanwhile, if you are not using a method of birth control and would like to become pregnant, don't forget to take folate or a vitamin that contains folate! And if you don't want to get pregnant right now, check out our article on postpartum birth control.

Thanks, lunashock!
I just kind of had that "pregnant feeling", you know? I felt queasy all the time, and have been really moody and whatnot. I'm on the mini-pill, so it would be quite a shock if I was pregnant, but I took a test and it came up negative. I still "felt pregnant", so I figured I'd ask.

I felt "pregnant" a lot for the first year after my daughter was born. All the symptoms I'd had in my first trimester with my first seemed to be resurfacing, but the test was negative. I understand that it's not uncommon, breastfeeding or not.
My symptoms turned out to be a lingering result of my pregnancy. My hypoglycemia was still out of whack from the pregnancy. My inability to control my blood sugar levels mimicked pregnancy symptoms. My daughter was a year and a half before I got my hypoglycemia back in check and the "pregnant feeling" went away.

You know what I'm really thinking it is now? I'm 100% sure I'm not pregnant. I started working at a baby and children consignment store a couple weeks ago, and people are always bringing in babies with them (quite often their babies are brand spankin' new). I think I'm just experiencing some really intense baby fever!
