Okay, I have only met a few people from Russia, and half are pro Communism, and the other half are against it. I was wondering if the majority of Russia is Communist, or if it is pretty much a half and half ratio, or if Communism is a taboo subject in Russia because of Stalin? One of my Russian friends wouldnt comment on it, so now I am really confused. . . Does Russia as a whole still like Communism?

I know I said I was on leave but I was lurking because I needed to read the Manifesto again and get some other links for my paper and you caught my eye.

Most of Russia is not pro-communist but that's more of a anti-soviet union than actually anti-communist sentiment. The Soviet Union (as most members of this guild will tell you) never achieved the title of true communism and is not regarded by most communists as a communist nation. I see where your confusion comes from but I think Mr. Vladimir Putin can put it into perspective for you: (note that I'm kinda paraphrasing) "Anyone who doesn't miss the Soviet Union has no heart, anyone who wants it back has no brain".

Something like that...>.> The point is, they realize that it was a great time for their nation, but also something that they can't have right now. The Soviet Union was a great country and many great things came out of it, but the nation isn't ready to be communist again.

I can't remember the name of the communist youth group that always comes to mind but here's a little PDF about Russian Youth Political groups. Political Youth

Also, This appears to be a good article pertaining to the subject.

Most of my news on current events in Russia comes from reading The Economist. It's a weekly British magazine, much like Newsweek but with a much more global approach. I highly recommend it. Also, current.com is always a good news source for anything international. And national for that matter.

Does that answer your question? 4laugh

Mostly, smile , but do people in Russia (I dont know if this is the right word or not, but I am using it anyway) discriminate against Communists like people do in the US?

From what I know (I've got a very interesting blog from an American Communist in Russia somewhere that I read a while back, unfortunately discontinued before I began reading it, but it gave a massive amount of insight on Russia and Communism), Communism is certainly more of an issue and there are far stronger feelings about it. A lot of the older people remember living in the USSR and I remember an interesting post on said blog which detailed a babushka lecturing a political candidate on not being "Soviet" enough.

Overall it's very mixed but strong feelings. I think the government is involved in actively trying to keep the Communists there from getting involved politically. Most of the Communists are older, but there are a fair amount of young adults sprouting up as well.

Unfortunately in many Russian's minds, whether due to memory or propaganda, Communism means the opposite of democracy and "democracy advocates" are the ones pushing for free markets, sadly.
