So I was talking to my sister about fabrics (she's wanting a dress for her upcoming prom) so I told her to start seriously thinking about colors that look good on her.
What are your best and worst colors?
For me the best are white, light blue, black, dark green and grey.
My worst is unfortunately red, pink, lavender, lime green and orange.

Hrm.
I love red on me. Any earth tones. Pinks and Green(except lime and neons) tend to look great on me too(they do wonders for my brunette hair and skin tone). And I think Black is a classic color that just suits any body.
However neons and lime tend to bring out the red in my skin and it isn't very flattering. Colors like Lavender, though the smell is lovely, wash me out. Red Orange-again brings out the red in my skin.
I love gray. My mom keeps telling me to add more color to my wardrobe but gray I feel brings out my warm tones and makes me look tan and sunkissed (with other colors on the other hand my skin competes with the fabrics brightness). But I only like gray in cottons.
But silky gray makes me look dead I think and washes me out. Weird huh??
You should tell your sister to seriously start think about what kind of cuts suit her body and that it translates into her pictures. I'm a competition swimmer, I had a six pack at my prom and the dress was sexy--but the pictures look like I had a gut!!
The fabric poofed out or something when I was getting snapped or leaned over or something.
Can I ask why you feel those colors look good on you and the others not so much?
And also does she know her prom theme?? whee

She wants to make one, yes. She wants a one of a kind dress and that means (in her mind) making it herself. But she doesn't have a good eye for what looks good on her on for instance, paper, I do. She's got a lot of red in her skin and hate's red...even on her avi. I love it (can't wear too much of it though) so she'll probably be wearing one of her signature colors; black, white (she hates white cause she thinks it makes her look fat) green or blue.
And yeah, she's has about 9 months to get better at sewing (since she hasn't made one thing she's willing to wear outside yet).

Hrm. That's scary. I wouldn't trust myself to make something to wear to prom unless I was already efficient at it.
Why doesn't she draw something up and take it to a tailor? I don't know about elsewhere, but here next to the mexican border it was actually cheaper to do that than to buy a dress already made. But that's due to the region I think. I don't know if cheap tailors are so abundant elsewhere.

I think she'd come out better buying it and then perhaps doing a bit of alterations myself. I thought she'd have a year to work on it, but now it seems she will be graduating this may instead of next, so she really wont have the time to learn now.
But she found a very sexy dress online, perhaps I can convince her to buy it...maybe I will get it for her if it's not too expensive. And alas no, the only person who actually tailors here lives in a small hick-town some three cities over, and it really isn't worth the drive. But it would so rock if we could get that kind of cheap labor/high quality by jumping the state line.

there seem to be tailers on every other block by me.
but i know where yor sisters at, she dosent want to be one of five people wearing th same thing. I cant count how many people had that problem at my prom. I actually went into nyc to get my dress and i still love it to death. one of my freinds went to countless thrift stores to find one, i know that seems gross to do, but she found a gorgeous emerald bubble dress, and if you get a dress from a thift store, alter it and then hate what you did, its not a big deal since it wasnt that expensive anyway

Ah, the thrift stores... well we have them, but the thrifty ones want you to be a size 3 or under, and the upscale stores...well you might as well buy it new in most cases, cause those old ladies just don't want to let those dresses go.
However I suggested that she get a dress and simply modify it. Of course they have to be in her color and on her comfort level (she's rather picky about backless and armless dresses). She'll probably end up wearing emerald green, a deep blue, or her favorite color in the whole world...classic black.

True, but we thought with it being a special occasion and all that, that we might just get her into something else. However, she doesn't really look good in whites, or bright colors. Green is her fortunate color and she does look rather pretty in it. But I think she'll be wearing black anyway we look at it, at the rate we're going.
The fact that she's talking about going at all is quite a surprise, to be honest. She likes to dress like a goth tomboy, so it's not normal for her to even mention her and dress in the same sentence without the words 'not wearing'
