-Basic Information-

Name: Aihara, Kaela
Clan: peasant
Age: 19
Gender: Female
Rank: student

-Appearance-

Height: 70cm

Weight: 130lbs

Hair: very light blonde

Eyes: grey

Clothing razz hysical Description: A picture is worth 1000 words. This is my character from FFXI; I hope this is ok. Ignore the ears and the tail and she's the same as my Gaia avatar....almost.

Background: Aihara Kaela lived in Rukongai as a commoner all her life. She grew up with her younger sister, Aihara Kahla, and her father. Her mother is a memory she can't recall, yet it doesn't seem to bother her. People often wondered about the two Aihara sisters. Their names were too alike for not being twins, and yet still they looked so much alike. Personality-wise the two had nothing similar: Kaela was the calm quiet type, Kahla was usually loud, wanting all the attention and she was quick to fight. However, it was usually Kaela who had to save her sister as Kahla had two left feet when it came to fighting. So she became good with her fists and feet due to her surroundings, or rather due to her boisterous sister. But no parent likes seeing their children get hurt. When both girls started to have a reputation as a problem duo and coming home with bruises, their father decided to seperate them and put their energies to better use. He sent Kahla to the technology research bureau. This was because when it came to science Kahla was a natural. Kaela was sent to the shinigami acedemy, her father hoping that she would put that street fighting to better use.

Personality: Kaela was never the talkative type, nor could she stand listening to anyone monologuing for long. She prefers direct actions, and so sometimes makes choices that seem just mean. She believes that lives are expendable if there's a benefit at the end. You might sum her up in one word: amoral. All this makes things seem as though she doesn't trust anyone. That's partially true, the only person she trusts is her younger sister. Somehow through all that, she remains the non-aggressive type. Avoiding conflicts and arguements, considering most of them not worth a second thought. She could do better though, and start telling people what she's thinking.

Other: There's a popular rumor around that says Kaela didn't gain her zanpaktou herself and that her sister helped her. It remains a rumor simply because the idea of a shared zanpaktou is ridiculous.

-Zanpaktou-

Zanpaktou Name: Banraku

Zanpaktou Call: "Become my link, Banraku."

Zanpaktou Appearance: This katana is actually a stright double edge sword, but it has a gaurd and handle length similar to regular katanas. The blade itself is 30% shorter than a regular katana's.

Zanpaktou Type: Psuedo Hakuda? (I'm not 100% on this)

Zanpaktou Soul: Resembling a noble woman, but upon closer inspection it's clear that she's a doll.

Shikai: n/a

Zanpaktou Abilities: n/a

Bankai: n/a

Bankai Apperance: n/a

Bankai Powers: n/a

-Techniques and Magic-

Zanjutsu Techniques: Nothing. Her zanpaktou's original purpose was to act as the the link between her and her advanced hakuda abilities. So it has no actual sword attacks, nor has she really learned any sword fighting yet.

Hakuda Techniques: Aihara is a street brawler. She's tough, tenacious and fights dirty, and all with her hands and feet. She's definately not a believer in fair play (street fighting doesn't provide the discipline martial arts does), so anything she can use to her advantage she'll grab. This ideal is what brought about her thinking up a new way to fight: "all matter contains spirit energy. It can even be found in the air. So who says I can't use that for fighting?" This is far more complex than it sounds. Plus the other problem of not being able to directly interact with spirit particles in the atmosphere (she's certainly no Quincy) would hinder the advancement of such battle abilities. That's where her mediator comes in. Her shikai allows interaction with spirit particles in a push & pull method enabling her to move and fight faster and with more impact. The hyappo shinshou and senri shinshou style abilities (direct attacks with high impact spirit energy) are only possible with her zanpaktou released.

Kidou Techniques: None learned yet.

Further Background

Aihara, Kaela a child raised in rukongai and the eldest of two daughters born to Aihara, Isamu. Although still very much a child at only 18 years old, she's mature enough to be surrogate mother to her younger sister: Aihara, Kahla. Contrary to their names and resemblance the two aren't twins. They are separated by only one years difference.
As for the story of their mother: neither sister knows or remembers about her. Isamu-san has never explained anything about her as his 2 daughters have never shown any regret of not knowing. However, a few nights before enrollment into the shinigami academy Kaela began having nightmares about a woman dressed in a elegant red kimono. Though most times the dreams didn't cause her a commotion, it came to a point where she awoke in tears one night. Her younger sister had not fallen asleep yet and was startled by the fact that her tomboy big sister was not just crying, but truly weeping. "Kae-neechan, what's wrong?" Kahla asks her sister with a worried look. She's seen her sister cry for cuts and bruises but never for something that would make her look so troubled. But Kaela was unreachable and the tears didn't stop. Worried about her sister more than before, Kahla called her father and told him what happened; albeit she didn't know really why Kaela was crying. It took a while for the girl to calm down, after which she explained what was disturbing her: "I've been having bad dreams for 4 nights now. All the time I see the same woman. Her face is white and she's dressed in red. She looks like a noble-woman from her clothing but I'm so scared of her." Kaela turned to her father and looked like she was about to cry again, "Papa I'm too scared to sleep."
Isamu smiled at his daughter to try and comfort her. He hugged her and said, "everything will be fine, you don't have to worry so much. I think it's time I told you about your mother."
Isamu give his daughters the full story about their mother. It turns out that she was a shinigami who had died only a few months after Kahla's birth. She was a resident of seireitei, and of a noble clan as well. Isamu had lived together with her in seireitei until her death. However, being a commoner, Isamu was never accepted as a part of her family. When she died he and his two girls where cast out of seireitei and Isamu returned to rukongai to raise his children alone. He smiled as he thought back: "I have no regrets about being with her. She was a beautiful woman."
Kahla, very interested in the story asked her father, "but how did a bum guy like you get a woman like that Papa?"
Isamu chuckled, used to his little girl's saucy attitude by now, "Heheh who knows. She never said why, but I could tell her feelings were honest."
He continued, "some people might say that I should've pleaded to have both of you stay in seireitei, that you would have been better off. But Maria would have never forgiven me for letting her girls grow up without their father there."
The story of her mother made Kaela's mind ease. Much to the fact that what her father described sounded like the woman in her dreams. She wondered if her mother was giving her her blessings for the future. Isamu stopped her train of thought for the moment. "Kaela, I have something your mother would've liked you to have." He opened a box that he had kept in the house for quite a long time. It was dusty but inside was a well kept red kimono. The exact same kimono Kaela had seen in her dreams. "You mother loved this kimono, she wore it allot when she was home with you. Kaela this is yours now, to keep you safe." With that, he handed her the garment. Kaela's eyes started tearing up again. But her father only smiled warmly as she said "Thank you Papa."
"Kae-neechan when did you get so girly to start crying like that." Kahla was only teasing her sister but she was happy for her. However, before Kaela had to leave for the academy, Kahla had something to give her neechan as well. She would spend their last week together giving it to her.

Information on the zanpaktou: Banraku

Visual information: The sword is a double edge straight blade with a handle length equal to a regular katana's. The blade is 30 inches in length and 1.5 inches wide at both the hilt and at where the sword curves at the tip. The blade is also engraved with the phrase "The one who manipulates fate" written in an unknown language starting from the hilt up to half of the blade. The guard is just a small gold sphere. which is unethical for making any real use. The handle is wrapped in red cloth. The total length of the weapon is 40 inches.

The Weapon's Name: The name Banraku refers to Japanese puppet theatre. Rather peculiar for a name considering that zanpaktous usually have more meaningful names. Almost as peculiar as its non-katana style.

Banraku, the spirit: As seen in the photo above, Banraku is a doll dressed in red. Being a doll it would be expected that using this zanpaktou enables the wielder to control a doll. However, Banraku itself is the zukai (puppeter). Her power grants the ability to move reiatsu at different vibrations, with can produce a variety of effects. This sounds more like showmanship, as it should be. The blade isn't sharp and its not meant for cutting. This comes from Banraku's original purpose of puppet theatre. The implications then give the idea that Aihara, Kaela may end up in the medical squad because at its highest levels, Banraku can manipulate the reiatsu of living beings. However, understanding Banraku's abilities and using it have a huge gap. Simply attaining shinkai requires an enormous amount of reiatsu control and awareness as well as a great amount of strength to swing it hard enough to actually cut something. About the only mastery that isn't required for adequate use of Banraku is kidou use. But even that can be enhanced by Banraku's spirit manipulation.

The unreachable?: Giving the high levels needed for attaining shikai (at least twice as high as regular shinigamis need), then it stands to reason that reaching bankai would be even more difficult. Normal bankai requires mastering your zanpaktou and high reiatsu skills. These rules apply to Banraku as well but an absolute mastery of ALL reitsu skills MUST be attained, no exceptions. Furthermore It would be pointless to train in reiatsu endlessly just to achieve bankai because the user cannot manipulate the reiatsu of anyone stronger than them. To be exact, to manipulate the reiatsu of another person the wielder needs to have a reiatsu level thats 5 times higher than the targets or the target will resist the effects. Plus the wielder's reiatsu reserves can be no less than 40%. In the end, the estimated level needed to attain bankai is 20 levels higher than that of a regular shinigami. For a sword thats not very sharp these are some very unfair numbers. One can almost be sure that Aihara well never qualify for the 11th squad.

RESEARCH NOTES ON DIRECT SHINIGAMI REIATSU CONTROL

These are the notes of Aihara, Kahla as she studied the workings of reiatsu as part of her private research at the bureau of technology.

I have been wondering about the workings of reiatsu ever since I was informed of its existence. In my research I noticed several things. I shall list these in this journal:

~Reiatsu seems to follow the same rules as energy on earth does, ie. it cannot be created or destroyed, but converted from one form to another.

~There is an abundance of Reiatsu in this spirit world. It's everywhere and makes up everything, even in the people here. This quantity exceeds the amount on earth by ten-fold. Because of the dense concentration here, the reiatsu doesn't move around as much as it would on earth. A reiatsu aware person could easily take advantage of that. This leads me to my next point.

~Reiatsu awareness. This is something that the shinigami academy tries to teach its recruits. The ability to notice greater amounts of reiatsu in beings. It's not a sense directly related to any of the 5 regular senses, yet the shinigami are trained to feel out reiatsu. Perhaps I should question a more adept shinigami on this subject. I'm sure my sister isn't qualified at this yet.

~Shinigami themselves do have some control over reiatsu. They are of course able to control their own output. It could be explained as a camp fire: the more wood added the greater it burns. Shinigami don't seem to be directly able to influence the reiatsu thats around them.

~However, a Quincy can. Though the notes I have on them are limited, I've found out that Quincy are humans who have developed ways to directly use reiatsu as weapons. I think that this is a marvelous concept. I wish to know more about this ability and why is it that these humans are able to do that. There could be tremendous combat positives to the shinigami how can duplicate this quincy skill. However, I'm aware of the bad blood between quincy and shinigami. Thus I doubt a quincy would willingly assist me in this subject. My only choice is to capture one by force, but alas, I do not have much in the way of strength. Perhaps someday the bureau will research them seriously. Yes, I would look forward to that day.

~This leaves me to try to develop a means for a shinigami to directly influence reiatsu. In my research I have looked over many shinigami profiles. None of them seem like a suitable research subject. Their abilities span a wide range and their powers seem unbalanced. They aren't taught to fight using reiatsu as a weapon like a quincy does. But their weapon itself: their zanpaktou, are directly influenced by reiatsu. I believe that this is the key segment in furthering my research. I don't have a zanpaktou myself but my dear sister will. I will use her for it. I will test the theory I've come up with using her.

~The one common factor that can influence reiatsu, no, it influences all matter. It is sound waves. The ripples created by sound waves also has a ripple effect on reiatsu. Although, sound waves themselves spread out in all directions. That would make them nearly impossible to use for single purposes. However, I'm betting on a long shot I've noticed: the zanpaktou spirit, in it's full bankai release. I've noticed the spirits themselves do not adhere to scientific laws and that bankai itself is often a defiance of what should be possible. If I could get one of these spirits to do so, I would have it use the sound waves to control reiatsu. The spirit, however, may have to be forcibly persuaded. I may be putting too much pressure on my sister just for my research. But if she succeeds she will be a very effective weapon. Yes, dear sister, this risk is worth your life. I will find a way for this experiment to work. That will be my gift to you.
