"My win, I believe."

Meleager grinned down at the Reya mare he had pinned to the ground, his horn at her throat. She scowled back at him. "Yes, Meleager-hallah."

With a nod and a satisfied smile, he let her go, stepping back to allow her to get to her feet. "That was a good session," he commented, "But I can tell that you're not too experienced. You lose focus too easily, and get sloppy when you get too involved in the sparring. Be more careful. You've got a good future ahead of you if you keep improving."

"Thank you, Meleager-hallah," the mare murmured with a nod of her head. The herdleader returned the nod, and walked slowly away from the sparring arena. That had had the makings of a good fight, but the young mare had got too carried away, too quickly. He wasn't satisfied yet; he could easily spar again with only a brief rest. There was a group of others, resting themselves, in the shade of a group of trees only a short distance away. Perhaps one of them would want to spar again - in any case, he was sure to find some decent conversation for a while. The muscled stallion headed towards them, and halted at the edge of the shady patch, stretching out his wings and back. He sighed. That was better.

For a stallion use to solitude and being alone more often than not, suddenly becoming part of a herd had taken its toll. Sanue was not use to dealing with so many individuals at once, and though they seemed to be more accepting of his appearance, he still noticed the stares he'd gotten. The feathered stallion still found that somewhat disturbing, but at least none of them had attempted to chase him away or shout disgusted phrases at him. Perhaps Ignacius was right, perhaps this herd was different and more open to his features, but he had yet to feel comfortable in its ranks.

So in that retrospect, he did what he could to make himself feel more akin to the masses he hardly knew. He spared in the arena with anyone willing to challenge him. And though he was slowly coming around to accept them as his herdmates, the mostly socially-awkward stallion still held some detatchment.

At the moment his sides heaved and his neck arched awkwardly outward and bowed toward his chest, exhausted from his latest match. It had been a draw, they had concluded, and he had been all too happy to accept it, for his opponent had nearly overwhelmed him with quick flurries of blows. They had parted ways with the usual parting, and now the hippogriff nequus was making his way toward a resting spot. He may go for aother match at some point again, but right now he was feeling the bite of hunger. He'd need to hunt soon. The stallion did not quite notice the looming herdleader just yet, and was unaware he was making his way toward the shady spot.

There were only a few Nequus here he knew by name, most of them from the Earth force, like the mare he'd sparred with previously. There were more he recognised, but all seemed engaged in conversation, or eating, or dozing. A couple were watching the sparring matches closely, and he smiled in approval at that. Always the way to spot new talent.

And speaking of new... Another grey stallion was approavhing, but he was Jala, unlike the herdleader, and had a strange coat of feathers on his head, claws, and a beaked muzzle... Meleager had met him once before, at his first entry into the herd, but had had little time to speak with him. He'd been assured the stallion's odd eating habits did not make him a danger to any other Nequus, but they still bemused him. Perhaps this was a good chance to talk to the newcomer properly, to get to know him a little better, and get a better idea of what he brought the the Hellenes.

Meleager shook out his legs - he couldn't afford to stiffen up as he stood here considering the other stallion - and trotted over towards him. A cough to catch his attention, and he asked, "Sanue, isn't it?"

How long had it been since he'd last eaten? Late yesterday, he bet, and even then it was nothing more than a measely rodent. Hardly enough to call a meal, and certainly nothing of quality when it came to the meat. Eurgh, and rodent always left a strange taste in the back of his throat. Fish was definantly the best way to go, but then again so were the other mammals larger than a rodent. Ferret, rabbit, boar, now those were some really tasty treats. Some really tasty treats that were making his stomach grumble at the very thought of it. Yes, hunting certainly sounded like the better option after his rest, despite how productive sparring happened to be for his training.

A flash of gray movement drew his olive colored eyes up and toward the approaching mass; a cough taking him out of his own thoughts and ponderings of lunch. The hippogriff hesitated in partial step, surprised to hear his own name being spoken. But, more importantly, who was-

Oh! "That it is, Meleager-hallah", he spoke up quickly, settling his foretalon back down onto the ground, the slight surprise showing in his voice despite his attempt at hiding it. To think the herdleader remembered his name after such a brief introduction at his entry, that was quite the pleasant surprise. Though, that posed the question as to what the herdleader might want, but Sanue somehow thought it best to let the Reya stallion bring that up on his own. The feathered stallion settled into a patient stance, fierce avian features focused on Meleager as he awaiting any sort of clue.

Meleager smiled. "How are you finding the Hellenes?" he asked. "I've been told that many find it takes some time to settle in after being solitary." He knew nothing of it himself, of course; he had been brought up among them, in the good times and then the bad. The idea of wandering alone was incomprehensible to him. Wasn't the best strength in numbers, and in strong relationships with the rest of your herd?

That was what he was here for; at least Sanue had come around to that point of view now. Or Meleager hoped he had. The power of the Hellenes came mainly from their army, but within that, from the sense of identity and willingness to fight for one's comrades that came from being part of a Mark.

Sanue had joined the soldiers, he remembered that much from their brief meeting, but not which force. Well, that was something more to talk about, and hopefully put the feathered stallion at his ease. He was just being friendly, and he hoped that came across in his voice and stance.

After their brief encounter, Sanue had only been able to come up with quick conclusions of the herdlearder. One being, he held physical strength and in all probability was one of the herd's stronger fighters. That in itself had been a pleasant surprise, for from the hippogriff had gathered of other herds, the leaders were often fattened and use to a life of luxury. Which made them arrogant in their decisions, cold-hearted in their dealings with... lower beings.

These thoughts aside, and after a brief thoughtful expression crossed his face, the hippogriff spoke up. "Its very different from the life I've been use to living, but it holds some pleasant surprises. I haven't found many individuals who are so open to accepting a nequus with my sort of appearance, so I'm vastly appreciative to have been pointed in the direction of the Hellenes." Indeed, he would need to thank his friend the next time they crossed paths.

"Still, I believe, it is taking me longer than expected to settle in", he further continued, dipping his beaked muzzle into a polite nod of musing. This had certainly caught him off-guard, but it was good to see the herd-leader, Meleager-hallah seemed willing enough to converse with him. That could be counted as friendly, right? With a settling shuffle of his feathered wings, Sanue conluded that yes, this herd was filled with pleasant surprises.

"Ah - it was Ignatius who introduced you to the herd, wasn't it?" Now he remembered that, it made perfect sense. IThe scaled Reya had his own spectacularly strange appearance, and it was really no surprise that the two knew each other. Meleager was rather pleased, actually - for Ignatius to bring another to the herd, and relatively soon after joining himself, meant that he must have settled in well and truely feel a part of them. The herdleader smiled. That was always good.

Now, just for him to see if he could help Sanue with that... there was no rush for him to get back to sparring. With a sigh, the bulky Reya sat down beneath one of the nearby trees, folding his legs underneath him with surprising grace. "Ignatius joined the Sigma force," - and became Castor's bodyguard - "what do you think you might do? I assume you're thinking of the army, too," he commented, with a glance behind the other stallion at the sparring grounds. Hmm. There was no one likely out there at the moment, although he spotted a class of youngsters over to one side with their teacher. Perhaps he'd wander over to them once he'd finished talking to Sanue.

"That's right, he did. I had been surprised to hear my friend had joined a herd, and even more surprised at how welcoming they sounded." He didn't think he needed to explain about why, not many nequus would be so open to accept a sharp-toothed reya or a taloned jala into their ranks. And the sheer fact the Hellenes had, gained them several points of respect in the hippogriff nequus' eyes. As for Meleager-hallah himself, so far he seemed decent and welcoming, which was always a plus in herdlife he concluded.

Sanue still felt somewhat exhausted from his last spar, having nearly been beat to the ground by his opponent, so when the herdleader went to lay down in the shade the feathered stallion couldn't help but wish to do the same. That, and it felt a bit awkward to be standing while the herdleader was on the ground. With that thought, Sanue sank to the ground where he stood, a light grunt escaping his throat at the effort. To be fair though, it did feel much more comfortable now that he was off his feet and able to relax.

"I've opted to join the Alpha force, I find my adaptations give me certain advantages while in flight," he folded one deadly talon over the other in front of him, relaxing into a more comforting position. Though... there was still something in the back of his mind that prodded at him. There was something more he wished to do. But what could that be? And should he voice it to the herdleader? He didn't want Meleager to think he was ungrateful for being allowed to join, and he certainly didn't want to seem like he expected more. He didn't, the feathered stallion simply thought there was more he could do for the herd, more than simply fighting off enemies whenever needed. The hippogriff gave an unsettled shift of his wings, lightly gripping at the soil under his talons.

Perhaps, well, perhaps Meleager was the best nequus to go to for something like that. Who knew the herd better than its leader? "Meleager-hallah, I still feel as though there's something more I could do for the herd. I'm glad to protect it as a soldier, but I'd be happy to offer any other services." Just what those services might be, he wasn't sure. He just felt as though he could do more, and he owed it to a herd that accepting him and his appearance.

Meleager frowned. That was a difficult one; he didn't know the beak-muzzled Jala well enough to know what else he could do. He would certainly be good as a soldier, simply because he was unusual, a new challenge for the others to contend with. With his birdlike mutations, it was no great surprise that he did well in flight, but Meleager wouldn't have risked guessing that based purely on appearance. It was only Sanue himself who would able to tell what he'd be good at - so far, anyway. Meleager made a mental note to find out who was supervising the feathered stallion's transition into the alpha force, and ask them to report back to him.

"I don't know what other services you could offer the herd, Sanue," he said simply, "since I don't know anything of your skills or experiences so far, or what you're interested in. It's up to you, really. There are things like becoming a tutor to the youngsters of the herd, teaching them both life skills and how to fight - or, you could do something like Ignatius, and become a bodyguard. The ambassadors and tacticians sometimes need such protection... although Castor is a bit of a different case."

Sanue might make a good bodyguard, Meleager thought; he was pleasant company, and by the sound of it a good soldier. He wasn't sure if there was any need for such personal protection amongst the other herdmembers currently, but he could find out, if Sanue seemed interested. If he seemed interested, Meleager repeated to himself.

The feathered stallion listened carefully, nodding in agreement to the simple statement the herdleader had first offered. Indeed, it had been just a bit rash of himself to bring up the subject without allowing himself to be fully understood in terms of abilities and what not. Yet, Sanue could not bring himself to regret his doing so. The subject matter was important to him, thus, he wanted to get on to it as soon as possible. And any help, any at all the dappled grey could lend to him would be ideal.

Ah. But the hippogriff's attention was caught at the mention of Ignatius' bodyguard duty. That really, really sounded like something he'd like to do. "Meleager-hallah, I must say that the bodyguard idea caught my attention quite well. It would be an honor to use these talons in protection for another herd member whenever possible." Oh that sounded exciting, he couldn't help twitching the individual digits on his talons just thinking about it. For a herd that accepted him without begrudging his apperance, Sanue would be happy to give full loyalty and protection to.

Now, though, he should probably wait for a reaction from the herdleader before continuing on about the subject. After all, it wouldn't be very good of him to 'jump the kick', so to speak, when he wasn't quite certain if a position was even available. Patiently the hippogriff awaited.

Meleager smiled. He did seem keen. That was always a good thing in a soldier. The only problem was, he wasn't sure what there was available for the feathered stallion currently. It was a time of peace; their few ambassadors were never really in need of protection... But, he considered, it would look quite impressive for an envoy of the Hellenes to have such a creature as Sanue beside them. It would certainly make others think twice about the herd.

Suddenly aware that he had drifted off into these musings, Meleager looked up at Sanue again, and nodded slowly. "I think you may make a good bodyguard. I'll mention you to Iris-hellene, if you like. She'll know if there are any ambassadors who require protection. And I can pass your name onto Castor, too, although the tacticians are less likely to require such services. And someone will need to speak to your commander in the alpha force, of course, but that's easily sorted out. So, if you truely do want to become a bodyguard, it shouldn't be too hard to find you a position," he concluded.

This conversation had not gone quite the way the Reya warrior had expected it to. He seemed to be handing out favours to herdmembers a lot recently; not a bad thing, he supposed. In this time of peace, he had little to occupy him, and being kind to the soldiers and citizens was one good way to ensure their loyalty in less stable times. But it did mean he had nothing better to do - and that was less of a good thing. The herdleader sighed to himself, wondering how Sanue would react.

The silver feathered stallion awaited the reply of the herdleader; an odd concept to grasp. He supposed he wasn't fully aware of what a herdleader ought to be, or how one should be thought of. He wasn't entirely uncertain, however; for it had been easy to catch onto the basics. Listen to the orders your given, and everything should be fine. But, as Sanue was discovering, it was nice to actually like the fellow as well. Meleager-hallah was making that part relatively easy, the hippogriff thought with satsifaction. Yes, this could very well become his accepted home. It'd just take some time to get use to the idea was all.

Ah. And with Meleager's response the hippogriff dipped his head respectfully. "I don't think I've met Iris-hellene yet, but I would appreciate the mention." In fact, it seemed like quite a bit of trouble to go through to get his position approved or even mentioned to the right people. "Thankyou, Meleager-hallah." That was appropriate, yes? And the hippogriff did want to convey his thanks, so it seemed to be correct. As he knew, Sanue wasn't quite apt when it came to comunicating with other nequus at times. Years of solitude that to ya, he supposed.

Meleager smiled. "It's no trouble." Well, it was a little trouble, but only a little - and it meant one more thing to talk to Iris about to stave off the slight awkwardness he felt around her now he was with Castor. "It always pleases me to be able to help herdmembers get to where they want to be."

Glancing round from his position under the tree, the Reya saw a group of soldiers he half-knew getting up and heading down to the sparring arenas. They seemed to have picked up a couple of unfamiliar youngsters - a big piebald Reya stallion, and a comparatively slim Jala, both of whom would, if he knew that group, be both skilled and promising of more to come. He caught the eye of one of their companions briefly, and nodded to him in greeting. The older stallion nodded back, turning to mutter something to the others.

Now he was bound to go over and speak to them. Meleager sighed to himself, half-regretfully, for it had been nice speaking with Sanue. He turned back to the feathered stallion, who he was sure had seen the exchange, and smile apologetically. "I ought to return to sparring now; mustn't get out of practice, and I've just spotted a couple of likely youngsters," he explained as he stood up, "But I will mention you to Iris when I next see her. I hope it goes well for you."
PostPosted: Sun Jul 05, 2009 8:25 pm

Ah, yes, it seems Sanue's impressions were quite correct. It was nice to have a herdleader he could respect and feel good about serving, perhaps even he could get use to not living in solitude like he had done practically his whole life. The hippogriff's stiff lips pulled into a smile, exposing just a hint of the few back molars he possessed. For there was no reason for him to have any more than necissary to chew grass when needed, when he had a beak to rip flesh from bone in the front.

Then again, his line of vision happened to be right in line to watch the exchange between Meleager and the other stallion, which of course Sanue could understand. Sanue nodded with a smile as Meleager stood, "I'll probably find a spar once I get my wind back as well, and thankyou." Heh, the hippogriff needed to work on his endurance some, it seemed like the constant spars were leaving him exhausted after awhile, but that's what one gets when they avoid interraction for most of their lives. A little while longer to rest, and then he'd be sure to find another partner.

For now, the silver feathered stallion stood, bowed his fierce head to the herdleader in parting, and began to walk the herd's territory. Best not to let his muscles get stiff, and stretching them would help get him ready for his next opponent.
